How much water should be in the reservoir when using leca? Some people say to fill it up to where the roots stop and others say to fill it up to the top, what should you do?

All of my 20 odd alocasias are in leca apart from one which is too big to move. They love it. Every new one I get is repotted immediately. I do use the wicking method though, I'd be very nervous submerging them.

Your channel is a blessing for me and my allergy to gardening soil. I just got a few ficus elastica by mail in dirt ball around their roots and I am wondering if I should or shouldn't wash the dirt away to plant them in semi hydro right away.

I’m not understanding… if the leca is dry surrounding the roots about one inch from my cache pot with the nutrient solution how will my plant/roots get to the nutrients??? I have transferred all my plants to leca. I don’t want to lose any. I have ZZ’s, Birkins, Sansevieria, Pothos, Chinese Evergreen, Cornplant, and Birds of Paradise. I have been following you for over a year. Gathering my equipment over time and made the leap! I’m excited. I had been growing my plants in soil anywhere from 2-3 years. I did the long method before putting them into leca. I’m just not sure if I add nutrient solution to what’s already standing or pour out what’s there and add fresh nutrients solution. Please advise.

Thank you for answering my question Nora! I had been thinking that perhaps once the water roots had grown your be having the nutrient solution coming up higher to keep more of the leca moist. I now understand that with the capillary action this is not necessary, especially if the water roots grow down into the solution so that makes sense now. So if the roots can't touch the nutrient solution in the early stages, how does it work for the long method when they are immersed in the nutrient solution? Is it just because it is clonex instead of foliage focus and is it a weaker solution?

This is what I wonder about too! If a plant is placed into a container with nutrient solution doing the long method, how is it different when there are LECA balls in the pot and the nutrient solution is then supposed to be kept below the roots? Hmmmmm....

This confuses me because if we do the long method, the plant is fully submerged in a container with nutrient solution….aka special sauce….so is there a difference between nutrient solution alone and solution that has LECA in it? I currently have 4 or 5 plants that I’m fearful will die because they are not doing well at all. 3 of them are in the long method on a heating mat with grow lights. It’s been 3 weeks with no sign of new water roots and lots of brown roots. They are a Philo Brasil, a Polka Dot Begonia and a moonshine ficus. The foliage is wilted or limp and look bad. The other 2, I did direct to Leca and they are not happy either. It’s been a week. Every morning they are worse than the morning before. These are a golden pathos and a diffenbachia. These are all plants and not cuttings so they all had nice soil roots. I’m confused as to what to do to remedy their sad condition!
