A lot of y’all seem to be overlooking the fact that 1) we are on a (partial) vacation and 2) these are the total costs for TWO adults! Of course you could do this cheaper if you decided to have less fun.
Pro Tip, look for a public library in the towns you stop in for free wifi, a/c, and comfy spaces! It is a great alternative to coffee shops if you are primarily looking for wifi. Also! Check to see if the library in the city you are in has recording space. As a librarian it is increasingly for common for libraries to have space for patrons to be able to set up and do audio or video recordings. Libraries are truly magical places!
@@HarryLovesRuth also depending on the library they may not have a fee at all to get a card if you aren’t local! I worked at a library where anyone could get a card regardless of their address.
It would be great if you could compile an extensive, categorical list of products you recommend (such as what plant-based milk you like, what sustainable toothpaste, where you buy your electronic gadgets, etc.) on a website or the future proof reddit
Things to take into account: you are still earning money while on the road, you aren't paying for regular things like utilities, and you are saving a fortune in gas. I think your budget is on par! And California Will be your spendiest part of your trip but you will save sooooo much in Mexico so it will all even out. My husband and i spend a month in Mexico and stay in hotels and only get to about 1500usd and we splurge quite a bit on food and drinks and car rentals etc. I think it's awesome how open you guys are about this stuff. Enjoy your trip!
I’m a 2012 Prius owner for 6 years now. I also never understood the hate. But even a hater carpools with me they all say. This isn’t bad! It is a nicer practical car! And it drives fine! And than i tell them that i drive it for 6 years now and never had any problems or costs just the usual oil and filter service they stop hating it
You know you're Canadians when you spend more on beer than on gas. Speaking of which, I am still surprised that you didn't spend more to fill your tank in a month. Great to see you're having fun!
I bought a 3/4 Cummins and 23 foot toy hauler last year to travel and explore. It was so expensive I bought a cheap 2010 Prius that I camp in, explore in and use for everything. I rarely drive the truck. I used to laugh at the Prius, now I love mine.
I'm actually from California and my family goes camping multiple times a year. It was so amazing seeing you guys so amazed because this is really normal for me. I never realized how lucky I am to live in such a great place 😄
I would love to see more vlogs from you guys, show me those awesome adventures that y'all are spending your money on. I want to see more of what you're doing on the road as opposed to the logistics of living out of your car.
I love you two!! You're so engaging with your audience and personable! Since my camper is a solo unit, I have a Dometic freezer and the Yeti 35 that is my refrigerator. So, I can freeze items and I use frozen water bottles to transfer over to the Yeti 'fridge' so I don't have to but ice. This way I can buy a lot more food and have far less stops at grocery stores and will never have to buy ice again. It works very well. And in case you're wondering how I keep the Dometic still working while the Prius is parked and not running, I have a Jackery Explorer 1000 solar generator that will be the electrical source until I start the car again. It works well as long as there's enough power in the Jackery. I know your set up is much different than mine, but there are ways to minimize those trips to the store. Thank you for making such wonderful videos. I would love to see your set up in person, for sure. Safe travels! Blessings!!
Being homeless, as in living in a tent or vehicle somewhere, is far more expensive than many would even fathom to believe. Food, water, and hygiene costs go up with housing instability whether couch surfing or curb sitting. Many of the retiree RVers of the 1980's and 1990's discovered that "housing costs" or space rental became increasingly hard to find and surprising expensive as time went on too; often more than mortgage and taxes had cost them. Space rental, vehicle fuel, more convience foods mixed with not knowing where to shop in New areas, and even propane added up quickly. Vehicle maintenance and repairs often sent thier budgets over the edge.
Do consider "shopping" ahead of arrival to an area on line for your food stuffs and beer. It is amazing how much this can save. Also, when you are in bigger areas with bigger and more stores buying some canned products, other staples, other consumables, and things like tools, equipment, and the like. Even buying just enough for a day or two can reap enough savings to count.
This was cool! Thanks for sharing! I’m a bit disappointed in some commenters below who criticized your spending, but I guess you’re always gonna get people like that on RU-vid.
We have the same Napier tent and only a few uses later our poles broke as well! Luckily ours was an easy fix and just needed a new elastic cord but I like your use of better poles and may keep that in mind since the fiberglass poles don’t seem like they were made to last!
I go on a yearly 1 week 3,000 mile road trip from California to Texas and back to see family in my Prius (About $500 in gas). I never pay for accommodations, but instead sleep at rest stops over night or in a family member's guest room. The law says 8 hrs at a rest stop, but law enforcement also know the average person needs 8 hrs of sleep, so they usually don't do anything if you spend an extra 2 or 3 hours using the bathroom, eating food, walking the dog etc. before you leave. I once had a staff member of a rest stop come up to me once and say, "hey you were here the last time I came to clean and I just want to check when you're planning to leave." I told the guy I had decided to clean my car that morning and would be leaving in the next hour and he was like cool no problem. I think I'd been at that rest stop close to 12 hrs at that point and that's the only time in 10 yrs of doing my yearly road trips that I've ever had anyone say anything about the amount of time I stayed.
You have so many more miles than I do but I'm always surprised when people get asked about leaving when at rest stops. I've been from NJ to OR and I've never been talked to despite being known to *sleep.* Gas stations are pretty understanding too (especially if they serve truckers) but living on a highway the rule at our stations is head out at dawn.
As a New Yorker, I’ll have to argue that lol Everything started on the East coast! There isn’t a state in this country with the heart, the history and traditions so full and intertwined like the state which welcomed immigrants from before the inception of this country. Most people arrived on Ellis Island and then they traveled and trekked across the country to other states…Sorry, plz don’t y’all be upset with me lol Love y’all videos!!💖
To put the gas in perspective: I drive a Subaru legacy. I commute about 20 km A-day, and I spend that much on gas in a month easy getting to and front work
Dang that’s actually much more than I thought it would cost lol. Worth it though if you have the means! Welcome to my home state!! Go to the Thursday night farmers market in SLO!!
If you guys are still in California you need to swing by St. Orres and the Sea Ranch Chapel that looks like a conquistadors helmet on Highway 1. They are gorgeous structures and the food at St. Orres is amazing. My fiance and I stopped there on our road trip when we first got together and it was unforgettable.
When I go car camping around the United States the only time I eat out is at a Taco Bell, two bean burritos. All my other food expenses go to big chain grocery stores. If I had better refrigeration in my Toyota Avalon I could eat better for less money. Boondocking is the best because campground costs can be significant. I have a lifetime America the Beautiful Senior Pass which gives me free entrance into US national parks and a half charge rate on Nationla Park camping fees. For entertainment I usually listen to Audible books rather than print books. My Audible library is nearly 1000 books as I’ve been a member for decades. Gas is also a significant expense because a month trip can range over 6000 miles or more. Gas is WAY more expensive in the West rather than in Northwest Florida where I live, usually twice as much or more.
Great work guys! Really enjoying this content. Oregon coast is one of the nicest places on earth…and I’m from BC haha. Glad you’re enjoying this adventure!
Lol so much excitement for washrooms. I’m with ya! The financial breakdown was so interesting. Thanks for the transparency! Tent poles for the win! Love from the Abbotsford lady!
I’m late to this video. Not to bring down the chat but just a reminder of open container laws, keep any bottles of alcohol that you have unsealed in the back, as far from the front as you can (since you kinda don’t have a proper trunk at the moment). And remember you can politely refuse any requests to search your person, bags, or car! I wanna keep the rest of your time in the US ticket-free! 😆
I love to see that you guys are having fun. I was shock when I thought the second biggest expense was beers. You should definitely lower that haha. Since you guys are on this journey and love reading books I would recommend Levi to read Man Enough by Justin Baldoni, such a great book, reading it feels like a mental/emotional journey from your head to your heart.
Be careful once u get to socal, it is HOT down here. Also definitely make sure to take advantage of all the great vegan spots, the food is my favorite part!
Honestly if your not careful your going to get a DUI. Cuz just being in your car and having been drinking or having alcohol in your vehicle you could easily get another ticket . Sleeping in public places “stealth” camping is actually not allowed in some places either . You better read up on local laws about certain things before you proceed in the state of California …
Oh hey Leah, for about 120$ you can by a KOBO reader & use it with your library card to take out books or buy cheap books on it , without having to pack a whole book!
Thats not a bad spend at all. I live in the uk so had to convert the amounts to £ but its comparible to my partner and my monthly income/spend in our everyday lives. Those 8 hour rest stops are such a good idea!
Always appreciate some good accounting! We're going to do a road trip through the USA in October and I'm afraid of those alcohol prices! It's definently a lot more expensive then we're used to here in Amsterdam.
Some vegan foods in SF to try: Shizen for vegan sushi (note that they’re a very busy place), Gracias Madre for vegan Mexican, and a bonus for grabbing brunch at Wat Mongkolratanaram in Berkeley. I personally thought the latter was just okay but it’s an Experience ™️ to get brunch from a Thai temple 😅
Thank you...I know fully understand part of turning read 💜 as an American I understood through context what Miriam was talking about when she asked about the beanie, love learning knew words, beany, knit cap or tuque ✌️ the cost do be cold 👍😋😬
Sounding like a great holiday to me. If you guys are spending that much it’s actually discouraging to think what a larger vehicle, meals and lodging would be for what I would call a normal road trip years ago. Most time the beer budget would be #2. Great episode..By far the best yet. Carry ON. My tip. Get a subscription to a couple of Libraries and download to tablet. Lots of trashy novels (for free).
Hey are you planning to visit Yosemite National Park? If so, in addition to visiting Yosemite Valley & Half Dome, you should also visit *Hetch Hetchy* and check out the body of water that supplies a very iconic city, don't forget to walk across the O'Shaughnessy Dam. I think you'll both enjoy it. Also are you planning to make a visit to San Francisco or anywhere in the Bay Area?
Chico is my hometown! I hope you enjoy it ❤️ if you get a chance S&S produce is awesome, Shuberts icecream is a must!! (Chico Mint and Rootbeer are my favorite), One Mile And Upper Park are a must, and obviously for the reason I’m sure you’re going… Klean Kanteen! Also, since you guys are into beer Sierra Nevada is a must obviously. Awesome farmers market on Saturdays. Check out Tea Bar! Have so much fun!!!
i'm currently traveling around the US mostly by Greyhound bus (with a few planes here and there) and i love it but your videos are making me soooooo eager to get a car and road trip myself. hopefully one day 🤞
I'm so excited you guys are coming to Chico, CA!!! I am living there and going to school currently so I can't wait to see your next video about how this town treats you guys! ❤️ and if you want to see some friendly faces, come by Dutch Bros on Cohasset rd by Trader Joe's and I'll hook you up (I work until 12p typically)
You guys are going to a lot of the places I went on a roadtrip a couple years ago. I hope you got to go to the beach in Trinidad, College Cove I believe. SOOO beautiful!
California is a beautiful place, do you plan to visit any of our big cities? You can camp in Samuel P Taylor State Park and go into San Francisco. Plus I know it sounds cliché, but you must also visit Los Angeles. I know I love LA.
Not sure of your itinerary, but if you can, Nevada is a pretty stunning contrast to where you’ve been, even the area around Vegas is naturally stunning higher altitude desert and mountains (especially after the hot weather and monsoon season passes in the next few months.) I do feel it is a bit insane to build an urban area that large there with the water issues going the way they are going.
Be careful being intoxicated and being in a car. Even if you are parked. Camping. If you are drunk you could get arrested. Lose your car. Get kicked out of the country. Even if you are not driving.
Yep. That's cheap as freak. $22 a day for 2 people on vacation? I just spent $11 on a loaf of Italian bread, guacamole, in a banana for lunch. And none of it was organic
Ok, I know you have sticker shock, but the amount to the right of the decimal represents cents, not dollars. Good for you for emphasizing the expenses are illustrative of two people having a long, working-vacation. Adventures are good and travel expands our understanding of this world, others and ourselves. Hope you wind your way down to south Florida, a well-known friend to Canadians!
Wow guys! I am surprised at how low your expenses were to be honest! I live in St. Catharines, Ontario, and I end up spending a ton of money on groceries for just me and they're not even organic most of the time because I find the prices ridiculous. To fill up my SUV has cost up to $120 bucks at the peak of gas prices, and drive a lot, so that's at least weekly. I also like my booze, so there is that. :) I wish I was having all of your adventures and not just sitting here at home dealing with Toronto traffic!
True story…and I’m not even a vanlifer. I got “the knock” in Weed, CA at a motel parking lot just for pulling over to nap in my car for a few hours back in the early 00s. It is the first town after all of those passes on I-5. Glad to see it’s going better for you!! I think those expenses are great! It’s also vacation. You’re experiencing new things, eh?
Thanks for sharing this! I find a lot of channels skip this part . Also how much the channel generates $$$ and what’s tax deductible, gross income, net income of yearly expenses. I’m curious 🧐
Thanks for the comment! Yeah in retrospect I think it's important to mention that this is all a business thing right? Should have been more clear there.
😂 what book did you leave at the give a book leave a book 😂 go back and get it if that one sucks or maybe a different one will be there 😂I’ve done that before
I’m curious how you are accounting for the bigger & less frequent expenses, especially for the vehicle, like the lift. Is this just going to be tallied at the end with all the disposition expenses?
