Today I get the siphon started back up to start filling the pond and then talk about our all in cost of the pond so far ***Amazon Link to Portable Power Station www.amazon.com/shop/hometowna... Email us at hometownacres@outlook.com
*You **_actually_** believe this guy?* Even if his numbers are correct.....it's probably the most expensive pond in all of PA. And...that stand pipe is still going to leak.
Glad you were able to find an honest and good excavation company. It’s hard to find someone nowadays who won’t try and rip you off. Also, the competence to know what needs to be done and how to do it efficiently. I would imagine having the spoils from the excavation stay on site, saved quite a bit in fuel expenses for him. Nice project repair, and hopefully you’ll see the fruits of your labor by winter.
I hope this fixes the pond for you. Hard work always pays off at some point and you are learning and experiencing things, making contacts along the way too. Great stuff!
Great explanations Adam! You do a great job of explaining whatever you are showing us viewers! Your channel is now in the “Top Three” on my RU-vid subscriptions! Thank you for taking us along on your journey! I’ve got to go my wife is making waffles for Sunday brunch. 🇨🇦🤪
Thanks for sharing your cost basis, really helps us out, and as a fellow content creator, you're 100% right on - ponds will create opportunities for more content than any pool!
Get ready for a beautiful lake! Your honesty is so refreshing. You put in the research and work and the lake will pay you back immensely. In 2002, in Westmoreland. County I put in a 20/x 40 in ground pool. When all was said and done it was $33,000. Today the same pool would cost almost $100,00. How do I know? My friend, who wanted a 15x30 was quoted, as you said, $85,00. PLUS the upkeep every year. Openings and closings $600 p/y, chemicals, geez chlorine has tripled, what in 2020 was $150 is now $350. Heater maintenance, pump maintence, solar cover.... The people who critize are jealous couch potatoes who have no ambition, only envy. Congrats on your lake buddy!
Adam, your planning, goal setting and dreaming has paid off. Thanks for the cost breakdown on this project. You and your family will enjoy the pond when it fills up. This is a great investment and will provide you with years of satisfaction. Blessings to you and your family.
🤣Chuckling at your kayak in the puddle. Thanks for that. And I'm grateful for everything you share on your channel. Great to see how you make things work.
Excellent video. I follow many homesteaders both in Canada and the United States. I enjoy completing various projects like ponds, workshops, trails etc on my small acreage. You are the only one who puts it all in perspective by revealing costs. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Finally somebody sharing some numbers, thanks. I wish you the best with your pond (I love ponds and hope to have at least two more on our land in the future).
Great video and great pond. I just got a quote for digging a 1/4 care pond for $40,000. and im in heavy clay so none would have to be trucked in! I couldnt believe it. Should be closer to $4000-10,000. Im buying an old D8H dozer and doing it myself
Great video. We learn a lot from our mistakes. I appreciate you sharing yours with us so that we can all learn. You are a great content creator! Thanks for sharing!
Fill er on up watch party part three! I have faith that this one will be the one that fills it up and holds water.Have a blessed Sunday and a wonderful week!!!
Easy way to start a siphon, pump the siphon line full, from the bottom, until water comes out the high (inlet) end. Air will naturally be pushed out. Close your outlet valve at the pond. Remove the pump, open the outlet valve and watch the water gush out. I filled my siphon line like this to drain my above ground pool cover for over 20 years. Works great. Time how long it takes to fill the line and you won't have to keep watch on the inlet. If you pump the water in from the bottom slowly you won't have to remove the inlet filter and the reverse flow will clean out the inlet screen.
Getting ready to dig a tiny pond in sandy loam soil. 50x100 feet minimum is what I am looking at and 5 or 6 feet at the deepest. I have 4 tons of bentonite and ordering 2 more tons and will do a 6" clay liner. I really hope things work out for me too. About 1 year ago I loaded about 15 yards by shovel in mid summer 110-115f weather to try a test hole. I have a small tractor now and will rent a dump trailer and slowly get stuff rolling.
I think we’ve all learned a lot from this project! It seems like a smooth finish would be more sealed than a sheep’s foot because of all the divots but I get the reason for it.
So glad that you did this video. I was actually considering a pond build at some point. But your video shows that it’s certainly out of my price range to have it done right. As far as that pool - WOW - super expensive. Thanks for the info, Adam.
Hi Adam, your economics is a wonderful way to show it’s not all Hard Work, Sweat an Tears. But there is a lot of value in planning and mining knowledge and experience. Also there is the added monetary value of having a pond on the property, it would appeal to a lot of future individuals. With the siphon saying you suck is a good thing. Again well done from Canada 🇨🇦. 😊✨💧✨👍🌊👍🌊👍🌊👍
Hello Adam.. I really enjoyed the whole entire segment of your pond build . Very informative . I'm confident you have a fixed pond . In my experience one of the hardest things is the research to find honest people you can trust . I appreciate all of your hard work to create good content for our entertainment. Thank you.
I've always thought you were gonna keep it simple, keep it 'hometown backyard' instead of full on BamaBass style, but happy to hear you'll be looking to do something in between. Can't wait to see what comes next. GL with filling her up.
WHat a fantastic idea, I have been having trouble keeping my pond filled over the summer. I have a creek running nearby and was just ready to start digging a ditch to connect, but this seems like a better plan. I cant wait to give it a try. I was surprised by the small "puddle" of water you are filling from, but it looks like it is working well. I considered using swails (pond is at the base of a hill), but couldn't find anyone to help with this that actually knows how to cut in a swail. I am still considering this as I think it is still the best option, but for some reason harder to do.
The most instructive lesson is to learn from those who advise you well, instead of plateauing by only learning from your own mistakes. Your knowledges dies with you. But if you teach others good truths, and they listen, there is growth, instead of family plateau.
Adam, money well spent. No mistakes at all, like you said, life experiences. Now get that pond filled up, add some fish and put some nice plants around it (not in it, outside of it). Beautiful place you got my friend. I’m from the Newport area, about 3+ hours from you.
Awesome presentation and great job! I'm particularly interested in the "French Drain"! I remember your video of water gushing from that system after rain. Please keep us informed. My French Drain provided me with hundreds of thousands of gallons of water over the years. (gushed out of a 4" pipe for days after a rain)
If your weather is anything like it's been up in New England, pond will be filled in no time. We are getting so much rain this year. Wishing you the best in getting the pond filled.
In a lot of countries including my own you can get a house for 32k. But I appreciate the transparency man, great content! Can't wait to see what's next for the pond! I feel like it's my pond too somehow. SUPERINVESTED AT THIS POINT! Have a nice day, good luck with your future videos :) Best regards from Sweden.
Adam, I think the pond was a wise investment especially if you factor in staycation potential. You will be building fun and long lasting memories for your family. Bill H from Cranberry Township
We have a 3/4 acre pond built in 1995 at a cost of ten grand, best investment we made . So many great memories for our boys and friends, and now our grandkids. Don't try to justify the cost... the memories pay for it. I'm going to say eleven months to the day till it's going out the overflow pipe.
It’s getting to the point where if someone can sell you the equipment but give you in-depth tutorial on how to build it might be cheaper to buy it used and then resell after you have finished the project. I am attempting a 3 stage pond where I’m testing each stage before I commit to making it bigger it might take a lot longer, but that’s fine if I’m enjoying it along the way. Plus there was huge weed problem I had to deal with there so the ground was always going to be teared up anyway. Thank you for sharing the hard lessons.
I think the problems have been licked. The only possible place to leak now is the puddle in the bottom depending on where the water from the puddle came from. If it is ground water that seeped up from the bottom, once there is a larger amount of water in the pond, the pond water could take the path of the seep and attempt to seek the level of the ground water. At least if that happens the area is small and it could be sealed without having to drain the pond. Also with all the clay in the pond now, natural silting will shift some of the clay into the puddle area and eventually stop any possible leak.
Plus by using the shale dirt to creat the apron around the garage and to grade the back area you didn’t have to have to spend money on bringing in from somewhere else.
Some fish structure in there would be a great idea before it totally fills up. Love the idea of a water slide, maybe you and Neighbor Doug could fashion up a floating deck with a slide/springboard. Would be a fun time for all....and your sister wouldn't have that either. LOL
As a 91-year-old female, so glad you gave us the costs so far. Well done Adam, your Mother & Father should be proud of you. So glad you found someone that is so honest in today's world. Keep following your dreams 🌈
I hope your fix works, but if it doesn't, then get those heavy duty Pond Liners next year. Different lengths and widths and the sections are heat sealed together. Won't leak.
Just for info. I started with a 1" and it did ok, but I added a 1 1/4" beside it and my water flow went from about 8,000 gallons per day to 23,000gpd. Made a big difference---both lines syphoning. I also made about a 12" square cage using 1/2" sq hardware cloth for a screen for both pipes.
$70K now for a basic pool in Florida. IMO your all in cost on that pond is cheap compared to the value it added to your property (and the content you got out of it). Tractor Hard! 🚜💪!
I have been following this project from the start. It goes to prove that you have to pay for your lessons - and you have taught a large school of viewers as well. Any fish in the future?
Those Drummond 1/6 horse pumps are handy. I have about 7 of them. To tell the truth I like them better than the 1/3 horsepower. One they have a longer cord, 2 they really move about the same amount of water while drawing less amps and then seem to outlast the 1/3 hp . Mine run almost 24/7 though
I think my original estimate on the "date the pond would be full by" expired 2 years ago.... LOL I'm hoping to see the next video with the water rising!! Great re-cap Adam! Cheers, --J.Andre.
I really enjoyed your videos of the pond project, Showing your mistakes, and how you overcame them was great, I was wondering if by now July 2023. IS the pond full?
I have been following this project with interest from the beginning. I have a similar property in the Southern Tier of NY...creek and all. This is the first time I feel dispirited. One of my goals for my future pond project is to have a breeding environment for lifetime supply of crayfish for fishing bait in the nearby lake.
Can you have crawfish in your supply stream and create a screen type barrier or pool before a waterfall that would keep them from migrating further into the pond. I did a bit of research and saw that some people do put crawfish in their pond. But, the potential leaks that they could create is not worth the gamble for Adam. So review the pros and cons… good luck
I'm shocked! I had no idea pools cost so much. I just looked up in my area and his numbers aren't wrong. (Basic inground fibreglass pool is coming up in the 40-50k range). I totally thought he was gonna say it ran him like 100k or something. This was an eye opener for me.
