How Much Weight Can A Gym Rack Hold? WOOD vs STEEL
We've gotten a lot of questions asking how much a wood weight rack can hold, so we figured we'd try it out and see. Is over 1,000 pounds possible? It's time to find out.

Duke should design and develop some spotter arms for this rack.
@mikemichaels4500
@mikemichaels4500 4 года назад
I plan on building something like this. I am thinking of attaching a three or four foot 4 x 4 to each of the front ends. They will have holes drilled in them that match holes on the main posts. Then I will use pipes like the full power rack.
@palabrajot505
@palabrajot505 4 года назад
@@mikemichaels4500 I have a bench that has double sided J-cups, which allows me to do squats, but I wouldn't call it a squat rack. I used it up until I was able to squat 300 lbs, so I joined a gym once that happened. Naturally, the gym is no longer an option. Despite not being able to load up the rack for squats, I realized that I prefer lifting at home. I've been carefully watching Duke's videos so I can build a rack, but I've decided that I don't trust my carpentry skills enough to construct this. So I'm waiting until Rep has the PR 1100 in stock and ordering one. It's costs slightly more than building a rack myself.

4 by 4s will handle any weight anyone can possibly manage to do the next 1000 years. Based on my experience with wood, I think you need quite a few 1000 lbs before you are remotely close to get structural failure.
@teeu.4493
@teeu.4493 4 года назад
Love the work, one bit of criticism - having 2 bars means you're distributing the stress amongst 4 positions rather than 2. In a way it cheats the test a bit, but I can't see myself squatting 900 pounds anytime soon so no biggie.
@Hellcommander245
@Hellcommander245 4 года назад
Most of the force being applied to something like this is downward/compressive. Douglas Fir has a compressive strength of about 7,000 psi. The weakest part of this entire rack are the metal nail plates holding the individual timbers together. Strength in this area could be improved by joining the timbers with mortise and tenon joints.

Id say medium difficulty with wood, would use lots of hinges, i definitely can float some ideas, maybe drawings if i had to, first an A frame, we know triangles are strong against sheer (downward) force. This is ideal because it will be loaded with weight. Hence weight bench, natural for elbows to go below during a rep The legs of the A frame at the back can "splay" held in place with steel chain+hooks for decline. To have the feet level with the floor, a quick release style bolt+nut and handle with round end fitted to both feet. Next fire door double hinges to incline the long torso wood, attached to the front end where you sit. Underneath a simple truss style bracket, threadbolt+nut under the torso shape wood to allow the piece to move freely, and u lock or U shaped metal inbetween a second and third wood from the bottom to sandwich in and make this a solid unit. It would take a few hours I think. Id make 2 and use the other for load testing

@whitemiata
@whitemiata 3 года назад
honestly with the weight being loaded with the bar in place and not dynamically put onto the stand you're testing the compression strength of the 4x4 which would probably be thousands and thousands of lbs of weight. The points of failure would be the flanges that hold the bar, so you'd need one bar loaded and loaded and loaded... and how the whole rack handles dynamic weight movements that would then challenge the triangles etc. All that said your rack is CLEARLY perfectly safe for if not EVERYBODY at least 99.99999% of weight lifters out there.

I wonder if you could use really strong sawhorses as safeties with this. Of course you'd do this at your own risk. I mean sawhorses of wood that have also been tested with serious weight. Sawhorses like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cEUgNjT1nGU.htmlsi=Tfew0bzET2mP9p-T I would say if you had a major fail maybe swap out the horse just to be safe or safer I should say. Of course you'd do this at your own risk. A three leg sawhorse might work better, I'd consider that too and bolting that third leg to the crossbeam at one end. Of course you'd do that at your own risk. My comments are of course for entertainment purposes only.
