"How Much Will Clay Shrink?" If you are % challenged like me (where you find it difficult to visualize what a 12% 14% shrinkage rate looks like in the real world ;P) this "Diamond Core Shrink Ruler" may also be the perfect tool for you.
I got this cool tool as a gift for Christmas from hubby and had to share...because I think it's one of my favorite. Knowing what the final size a freshly thrown or handbuilt pot will be is a dream come true I tell ya!
(no, Diamond Core did not ask me to promote for them ;P)
It's just a special share from me to you... one pottery adventurer to another !
Happy Clay Play ~ Love & Blessing Tammy Jo

Well isn't that just the best ever, didn't know such a thing existed. I was just asked to recreate someone's favorite but sadly broken berry bowl, a 'Humpty Dumpty' bowl. I tried some math and guess work, it's in the kiln now so we'll see. But doing the measurements backwards from your ruler it looks like I got it about right. So maybe now you can finally answer that old potters question - do thrown pots shrink the same amount up and down as round and round??? Thanks so much for this.

I was wondering that too lol, so I actually have an experiment in the works...it may even vary by weight/% or angle (but I won't get that specific lol ;) I'm sure your math computations will work out, hoping for the bestest of the best results :D !!!

Does the shrinkage rate change within the same clay body depending on the batch? For example, I bought a clay body from Laguna clay and it has a shrinkate rate of 10% +/- 2%. After using the clay, I discovered it has a shrinkage rate of 12%. If I buy a new bag of this same clay body from Laguna, will it always have a 12% shrinkage rate or could the next bag have a 8% shrinkage rate? Thank you so much for all your lovely videos.

Thank you for the encouragement on the videos! It is my underestimate that they should be generally the same, unless the manufacturer changes some aspect of their clay recipe 😊 I recently purchased a clay body that suddenly started crazing with a certain clear I've always used with it. My only guess is something changed in the clay because the clay and firing didn't change, only the bags of clay.

But don’t you need to know if your clay shrinks 12 or 14% before using that ruler? Don’t all clays have a different shrinkage rate?

Yes, shrinkage rates are usually listed on the box/ bag when purchasing 😁 This clay shrinks at 12%, I do have porcelain that shrinks at 14% so turn the rule over and use the 14% ruler!
