kipchaks and cho ko nus' secondary projectile also deal 0 melee damage, which turns to a +3 against rams due to their negative armor, that's why they kill them 10x faster instead of 4x

The primary attack also deals 0 melee damage.

@@edwinpoon edit: Oh, interesting: The Kipchak's main arrow does NOT deal 0 melee damage. The Chu Ko Nu's main arrow DOES deal 0 melee damage. Test it in-game in the scenario editor. Be careful that you only fire 1 arrow. You will notice that a ram loses 3 HPs. Or in general even if you fire consistently, you will notice that a ram will always lose HPs in 3 step intervals.

Double crossbow actually does 50% of the damage of the original projectile with a slight spread added so that they don't always follow the exact path as the first projectile. This is according to the wiki and SotL's video on ballista elephants not any in game testing by myself but unless the devs make a change in the last year or so it should still function the same way.

I think one example that should bear mentioning is garrisoned watch towers. Their secondary projectiles do bonus damage against stone defense buildings, but the primary projectiles don't, which is why garrisoning has a disproportionate impact on who wins a tower war.

Kipchack and Chu Ko Nu extra arrows actually deal 3 pierce + 0 melle damage. In most cases that ends up beeing 1 dmg/extra arrow, but in a few cases it is more, e.g. vs siegeram with +3 melee armor the extra arrows will deal 3 damage each (3 pierce atack gets fully blocked, the 0 melee damage deals 3-(-3) = 3 damage).

Also secondary projectiles are not affected by hill bonus or cracked terrain

Nice topic, I would’ve liked to see talk on towers and their extra arrows too. Also, it would’ve been nice if attack rate was factored in when saying that the one shooting extra projectiles does more damage, since they often fire slower.

It's mainly the 0 melee attack of the ckn and the kipchaks that make them so good vs rams. Rams have -3 melee armor. So 0-3=-3. So the extra projectiles are doing 3 damage to the ram. So for ckn, 7 damage per volley, and 13 with the elite upgrade.

edit: Interesting: The Kipchak's main arrow does NOT deal 0 melee damage. The Chu Ko Nu's main arrow DOES deal 0 melee damage. The first arrow also deal 0 melee damage, so it's 9 and 15 damage per volley.

It might be worth mentioning that there are some other examples where you got multiple projectiles, which all deal full (or nearly full) damage: → garrisoned towers/towncenters/castles → (after recent changes, if I remember right) the organ gun.

It used to be for a very long time that when garrisoning units with extra projectiles nly the last projectile was counted so Chuks and Kipchaks were horrible when garrisoned in a tower or Castle. That was changed like a year ago and now the total damage of all projectile counts for the extra arrows of the buildings. While normaly the DPS of a unit gets converted into tower or Castle arrows Chuks and kipchaks likely increase the damage output since their extra arrows have a nominal damage of 3 but that usually get reduced by armor to 1. This is why Chuks in Teuton bombard Towers fire 3 shots.very relevant for Team Arena 1111111

It's a bit strange that the graphic for the extra projectiles also get the fire from the chemistry upgrade, although it doesn't do the extra chemistry damage.

If the second projectile hits a target that the first projectile didn’t hit, would it be full damage or just one? Like that scorpion shot sometimes moved away from the first projectile

Well this is simply wrong. The secondary projectiles of all of those units except the Mayan Skirmisher deal more than 1 damage, though in many cases, the damage is so low that it isn't higher than the opponents armor.
