For years I used to get shit at work for things like lateness and mood swings and getting flustered when interrupted. Then as soon as I got diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year management instantly started to accommodate me. I now have flexitime and am getting more time alone so I can focus without people distracting me, and I now get asked what meetings I want to attend or be left out of. I didn't change at all. But having that piece of paper that says I've got ADHD changed everything. I work in a photography studio so that helps because it's not a standard office job.

It does have his perks. We feel joy far more then others. When I went out clubbing, people would ask me if I didn't have a little something for them, because they would see how much fun I had dancing. We don't need that little something. We are excellent at thinking out of the box. We are amazing problem solvers. We are curious and interested in about everything. And last but not least we have an amazing ability to love, be empathic and help others. Don't forget to search for the domains where you get hyperfocused. That might be the right place for you to establish a career. ADHD and ADD are a challenge, but it is not all bad, just like anything else in life. Everything has it good and bad sides, whatever you decide.

I understand that hopeless feeling. I've found it helpful to remember that this isn't an illness or a fault with us. It's society as its currently organised that causes us all the problems. I firmly believe that ADHD is an evolutionary adaptation in humans that helped us throughout our species' history. Think of all the exploration, experimentation, invention and pioneering done by people in the past - I bet ADHD had a lot to do with it. We're not motivated by mundane tasks because we are evolved to save our energy for more outside the box activities. The kind of things they have pushed our species forward little by little. I know it may seem that none of this is helpful to your current situation but it's about how you view and think of yourself. As hard as it can be to fit into modern society, you should always try to see your strengths. Think about how you might be able to move your life towards your strengths and away from the things you find too difficult or uninteresting. On a more practical side, have you looked for local adhd support groups, either online or in person? Communicating with other adhd people can be really helpful in sharing problems, solutions and just realising that you're not alone with this.

Meetings...omg. Finally someone said that! I'm a web developer with adhd and it's generally mentally challenging to code and requires insane focus, but even coding non stop for hours isn't as draining as a damn 15-30 minute meeting in the morning. After meetings I have such a hard time to get myself to work because nothing ruins a day like a damn meeting.

Wow I worked for a while in a company ruled by the owner and his daughter, they liked to run weekly meeting about nothing! ~10 people around the meeting room table, it was a kind of "stage" for them to speak about whatever came on their mind, most of time, not related to work, plus some "punch lines" by elder workers. We were a "trapped" audience. It was a pain and don't even have ADD. Sometimes there was some cake I could entertain with and I used a cup of tea/coffee to avoid yawning
@TheStarBlack
@TheStarBlack Год назад
I'm actually ok with meetings as long as I get plenty of chances to speak! The thing that wrecks my day is employees problem-dumping at me. I can take one or two problems and come up with some ideas for how to resolve them but by the 4th, 5th, 6th problem my brain has turned to soup!

I was a dog walker and sitter for over 10 years. Pay was so-so but I didn't dread Mondays (or any days), probably because I was outside and dogs are simple to get along with. Due to it not paying well, and an injury, trying to learn coding now. It super hard sitting so long and also having to push thru difficult (to me) problems. Like Stuart, I'm not medicated. All I can do is try to fix some of the co-morbidities such as sleep problems (getting a CPAP next week), anxiety (positive self coaching) etc. and just going easy on myself so I don't get burnt out. Good luck everyone!

I call it the ADD tax , I have to have everything double. Keyboards, mouse, glasses., charger, etc... 1 for at home use and 1 for at the office. What is already on site can not be forgotten. Another thing I learned myself not to do anymore, because it will get me in trouble E V E R Y S I N G LE T I M E, is telling myself that I will not do something now but I will do it later. That is a death sentence of whatever I am supposed to do. For example, when I come home, I need to attach my keys to my backpack now and not later. I need to open the letterbox every day and open letters right away. When I have used dishes, I need to get them in the dishwasher right away. All my bills are now on direct debit. etc... Now I have a phrase that I repeat to myself, "What is DONE, is DONE" and I don"t need to remember it any longer. It no longer has to take up any headspace for longer then it needs to. Every now and then I relaps and I feel horrible, the task becomes bigger and bigger in my head to the point that I turn to escapism to avoid it. Making things even worse. It is a horrible feeling. For so long I pushed back that kind of mentality of getting everything in its place and getting things done in advance, in other words "adulting". But I was only shooting myself in the foot. At a certain point you finally get so sick and tired of yourself that you just give in and life becomes soooo much easier with every strategy you start to implement. People do not understand how much our inattentiveness and forgetfulness has a far more negative impact on ourselves then on them. Sure it is frustrating for a boss or teacher that you forgot an assingment. But for us, it pushes us into a negative psychological spiral that will prevent us from living a fulfilling life. That is a HUGE price to pay. My son 17, also has a severe form of ADD. He now convinced himself that he doesn't care about school, about sports, about getting a drivers license, about getting somewhere on time, having a clean room, having clothes that are clean and smell fresh etc... He has so little faith in himself that he is now at a stage where he avoids all challenge or expectations that others or himself can put on him. Which is easier rather then to admit that he really feels like a failure, that he can not trust himself to accomplish anything ? But I am not fooled, nor is his brain. You can tell how much someone respects themselves by the presence or lack thereof of cleanliness and beauty that surrounds them. The only strategy that I have for the moment is to compliment him profusely when he does something else then escapist behavior, when he takes care of himself, when he does do sports etc... and show and tell him that I love him every single day. I show up for him for everything he needs in the hopes that he will at least have the feeling that his mom believes in him and that he IS worthy of love and trust. If someone on this forum has some brilliant ideas on how to encourage a teenager to start implementing ways on how to accomplish tasks and make life easier on himself, I am all ears. I will try anything. For the record, I did try backing off completely and leaving him to his devices, in the hope he would get frustrated sooner with himself so that he would act on it to do better. Well that failed miserably and he failed school last year. So this year I got him in a school to learn plumbing. For a kid that started and succeeded the first year of Latin, he is severly underperforming. It breaks my heart to see him undervaluing himself. 🥺

I despise jobs where you stand for hours on end and do the same thing over and over. Where I currently work I do the same thing over and over,but it is in a different location a lot of the times. And I can be pulled from one assignment to go do another assignment. Plus whenever the job gets done and all the assignments are finished I usually sit and wait until it's time to go. As I say to my co-workers as long as the job gets done the supervisors won't be on your case.

I'm a self employed plumber, its physically hard and I have to use my brain, and I'm a good plumber when I remember where I put my tools and remember to call people back. Spent 20 years on the benefit system before i new i had adhd because I'm unable to work for anyone and feel exhausted all the time, medication made me suicidal. Tbh I was happier on the benefit system, not sure how much longer I can sustain doing this work as meltdowns are getting more common

@mleys3248 Год назад
1) You need to organise your truck. Get a professional organiser if you don't know how to start. It will be money well spent. Give every tool its place in drawers - labeled and all. 2) Stop saying to yourself, you will do something later. That is our pitfall. Do it right away. Organize yourself so you can do it right away. Charge those batteries now, put away your tools in their place now, call that person back now, pay that bill now, get a mobile payment device and let your clients pay on the spot, get a device that will allow you to make and send your invoice to the customer and your accountant in your truck as soon as you are done with a job, order the parts in your hardware store as soon as you know you will need them for a job, in the evening prepair for the jobs the next days and check if you have everything you need. Repeat to yourself every time : What is DONE is DONE. Every time you do things right away, stop and really feel and enjoy how good that feels. You can do this. Take back control on your days by planning them, start to do lists with little task, every time you cross out a task you will feel rewarded. You will feel empowered and you will regain trust in yourself again. 3) get a bin bag in your truck to chuck away all the trash right away. Clean your truck every Friday. You got this.

Maybe you can hire some young person to help you and also teach him the work. What is causing the meltdowns? frustration at work? at home? If you chose and active physic Job you probably have... hyperactivity?. Also, "meditation made you suicidal', you can try a different medication. To live on benefit is never the best option

I had the same thought as the other comment - could you employee an apprentice/assistant who is good at organising? Give them all the tasks you dread doing and focus your time on the bits you're best at - probably doing the actual work. Have you tried using any apps etc to help with remembering tasks? I find it helpful to gamify things to some extent- seeing how many actions I can cross off my digital calendar each day helps me. Having said all that I deeply understand your thoughts about benefits. I've never been in a position to do that but I've honestly lost count of the thousands of times I've cursed society for making me work for a living and demanding to know why I can't just be left alone to enjoy my own company!!

Growing up I just get yelled at by parents and teachers, told to just "pay attention", "just focus", etc. It's not until I'm an adult and seeing a video like this that I realize that it's just a certain way certain people's minds work, and you have to work with that logic, not against it. Hi, I’m a gas engineer (servicing, repairing and fitting boilers mostly) and after 14 years being employed by a boiler manufacturer I’ve gone back to self employment. The freedom is wonderful but the extra responsibility of organising my work is hard going, but worth it. I’ve tried software based diarys but I find I have to be able to see the details with out clicking to expand them, so I’ve gone back to using a ‘week to view’ paper diary which I transfer to an electronic version after each day, for accounting purposes 🙂 Thanks for sharing your experiences and thoughts 👍

I worked as a housekeeper and then a domestic assistant in aged care (still mostly cleaning), and while it was often mind numbingly boring, I was able to cope due to the varied work, the need to keep moving, and I find it easy to hyperfocus on that sort of menial, physical task. I freelance as a web designer now and I find a lot of fun in my work, but keeping myself at my desk is really, really hard. I'm getting better at it and gradually figuring out what works for me. I’m a housekeeper, have worked in psychiatry for two decades and I feel really lucky to have that as a job - like you said, it can get boring but you’re moving around, switching up tasks which is great for someone with ADHD ☺️ I’m also lucky enough to be able to listen to audiobooks/podcast/music while I work, this way I am entertained and less likely to just put something down before finishing it. I’d have a hella hard time sitting at a desk all day 🙁

Still trying to figure out how I can make it work... Hope you're having more luck than me!

The following isn't medical advice, but this is what works very well for me: I take short acting Propanalol (long acting doesn't work very well), at the exact same time as my ADHD medications. This will mitigate/eliminate the onset anxiety, felt around 30 minutes after taking Concerta or Ritalin etc. I take 18-36mg of Concerta with 20mg of short acting propanalol, first thing in the morning. I like to go lower on Concerta and throw in some Ritalin (10-20mg), early afternoon if I start to flag and I can still sleep. If your ADHD medication dosage is to high, you won't be able to sleep (half life isn't the only variable in drop off rate, dosage plays a big part too), creating a vicious feedback loop. If that happens, reduce your dosage. Lower is always better. Life gets easier, post diagnosis. Stay positive and keep pushing forward, my friends!

When I started in the workforce ( I was one of the first people to have a "smartphone" a Qtech. The reason why I bought it, rather then use the cellphone that was provided to me, was that I could synchronise my outlook agenda to the phone so I wouldn't miss meetings. Of all the jobs out there I worked as a project manager in software implementations. At first sight probably the worst job for someone with ADD - planning wise. But by using my calendar, it was probably the best desk job for our affliction. Because the job needs some serious problem solving skills and out of the box thinking to get things done. It also requires to manage different aspects and stakeholders at the same time. That allows for variation and change during the day. Both areas in which we thrive, probably because we need to learn fairly quickly how to work around our inattentiveness. I did project management for 20 years. Now I work in internal audit. Which is far more challenging because it requires a lot A LOT of writing of reports , documenting and staying behind the computer . But I want to get better in expressing myself on paper. That motivates me to power through. I try to find motivation in what is important for me or could help me develop skills that might come in handy in the future. Sometimes I do need Ritalin to keep me focused. But I use it sparingly. I might use it for work or when I will be in a stressfull situation or when I have to do housework and have to regulate my negative feelings of dread and resentment, making housework duties worse then they actually are. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to stop constant social media consumption to get my dopamine fix when I am off work. I am wasting sooooooo much time of my life. I hate it and I don't know how to cope with it, because the escapism is so convenient.

Visualization is the key! yes it is, i agree in 100%. Taking notes is always good, but i took it one step further. I'm taking visual notes, or so called sketchnoting. helps a lot to get your brain engaged. The biggest hell for me was during pandemics, when i changed the teams and i had to do the training with someone i didn't see. HELL on Earth. Not to mention that the lady who was giving me training had horrible attitude and no patience (i left that team eventually and moved to another). But I have actual question to you - does your management know about your ADHD? and if yes, how do they react to it? I had my struggles in my job, and when it once happened that i simply couldn't do the task as requested (because the way the task was constructed), and i heard that "neurological problem is not an explanation, you simply need to be more open minded!"

(Planning advice included in my text below) I have been laughed at for my "rainbow" calendar. It has been immensely helpful to me. Also interesting that you plan your day in the morning. I do the same, as my head is most clear in the morning. Many people recommend to do that in the evening but my mind can't handle that after a full day of work. What really helped me is that I recently designed new templates for my work. I already have been using color coded categories for a while but sitting down every day and deciding how much time to spend on each category is hard. I had an ideal template day suitable for days without any meetings (which I almost never have...). Now I created new templates for days with 1, 2, 3, ... hours of meeting so I can use the template every day depending on how much time I have aside meetings. I haven't planned everything (about 80% of the available time) and I also included a buffer to ensure flexibility with urgent tasks. This new system has been working so well for me!

I love this video and watched it twice, it speaks about me, I also do similar backup plans, I also use reminders that are always on my mobile phone screen it looks like a check list I set reminders for everything.. literally everything and I never leave a single thing without a reminder, not only that I set a repeat setting for each task some of them everyday some of them every hour reminder and few will be every 5 min reminder. this one thing helped me alot not to forget any thing.

So happy to hear you have some good systems in place!! Will they give you an itinerary before meetings so you know what the primary goals are? I tend to lose attention when other people go off topic, and then I miss it when they get back on task. You might find you are the hidden gem that keeps them focused on the topic, "That is a good issue to address at our next meeting. Let's keep moving forward." 😊

Hey Stuart, somehow every example you give of your experience is my exact experience also. Such as submitting things unchecked. I used to work with defence contractors and many engineering people- we had many meetings for job progress, and safety meetings, leadership of my team and so on. This was my technique to make it through meetings.. I would silently count in my head, sometimes to two or three thousand. Nobody knows you're doing it, but it stops/ helps to stop my mind from wandering. It's funny to ne so present in meetings, due to doing a mental task that takes commitment. The funniest part of it though is when you want to speak or answer questions, I had to dial back my focus to ensure I did not talk with too much momentum in thought- the momentum of keeping count. But it was highly effective. Another tool I learned, was to practice staying out of my head- where all our feelings and emotions are. You can do tasks externally with the body- just like everyone else can do the same task. But we do have to go into our head to use our brains, like calculations and so on. I used to refuel ships on the ocean, driving those fuel hoses across to the other ship. So after 2 or 3 hours of focus like that, our energy is so depleted, we have to ensure we get back out of our head a little. It's unsafe to stay in there. I felt very liberated by being out of my head once I got good at it- and I got so much more when talking with people and so on. Much more connected to my surroundings. All the best buddy. Jake

Crazy I live my entire day feeling like I'm in a moment. But it's later that I realize how many things I missed. If I build something (a small porch deck let's say) if I encountere a problem I fix on it until a moment of confusion. Later that day the answer is right there. It's almost as if I have a subconscious understanding just can't Access the information when I need.

very good. I use a lot of colour, I am a technical training instructor and when I am preparing lesson material or working from someone else's lesson material, I find that I need to go through everything that the other person has prepared, sounds like I don't trust but its good to check that others haven't missed any key learning points etc... so I go through and colour code all of the material, that way I can visually identify all of the individual lessons and break everything down into smal chunks to help me learn the material thoroughly before I am due to the deliver the training...always remember the 6 'P's... Prior Planning Prevents P**s Poor Performance ... haha

I'm interested in finding out if there is some recursive process which will encourage the techniques to self-perpetuate when I implement it.

For me it really depends on the job I have but I think there is always some part of me wondering if the mistakes I made on the job were because of having ADD or other factors. I can tell you I have over looked small details previously such as giving a person a metal spoon for a to go meal when I worked at a coffeeshop, but that was also likely because I was running on less than 4 hours of sleep. I also missed the details of an email once when replying to someone, which made my rejection sensitivity really peak. I was so upset for messing that up for days after that even though it was only one email. I find it so difficult to regulate these things and change these behaviours. Sometimes I just think I am immature but I don't think some people really understand how debilitating ADD can be for someone, I can say with 100% certainty that it has negatively impacted my life so much. I really want to get out of this cycle but it seems nearly impossible to do so.

i am 29 and very unsure about if i have some type of adhd. i have been to shrinks and specialists but the tests were inconclusive. yet i revisit the test and find that most of the answers would be positive for signs of adhd. i dont know if i should go back to another shrink or just try to get on with life. i am pretty stuck, i have no real job, only a bachelors and skipped out on my masters but now i can choose a path to stick to for the life of me. I struggle with chronic mild depression and negativity, low dopamine etc. i have a porn addiction and struggle to stay on nofap. When that goes well i find all my symptoms of adhd as well as my negative mindset lessen. Yet i struggle a great deal with relapses and binges. I cant figure out if my adhd is from birth or from addictions like gaming, porn and negative selftalk. or a combination of all. One thing is for sure, porn addiction is real and it essentially gives you adhd.

Sometimes I set alarms and events on my phone but my brain wants to ignore them since they can be so frequent they get lost in the noise. What would you recommend someone with ADHD does in that scenario? It seems like every attempt to organize myself better has failed.

Hi Marko, could you give some more details please ? What was tested exactly, what were the results making your endocrinologist decide you had a hormonal disbalance and what medicine are you taking to harmonize the disbalance ? Do you need to take it every day ? Will you need it for the rest of your life ? I want to ask my doctor this, but I need more details to convince her. Thanks in advance from an ADD mother who has an ADD son and is at her wits end. I am really interested.

@@mleys3248 I was diagnosed with hypogonadism (abnormally low testosterone) and iron deficiency anemia. These two conditions usually coexist toghether. Also, I had ADHD symptoms since I was 11 and now I'm 32 now. TRT increases Iron absorption and I think that is the critical part because ADHD is usually linked to low blood iron and some other nutrient deficiencies. After I started with TRT my attention spans become longer and brain fogs disappeared. I'm not a doctor, but I would suggest that your son does sex hormone blood test (testosterone, estradiol, prolactin) I have seen research papers on the internet that links ADHD and other cognitive impairments with sex hormone disorders. Unforunetly RU-vid doesn't allow me to paste links in comments, but if you google “low iron ADHD” you will find a lot data that you can show to your doctor. Before taking ADHD medication you should check that your sons sex hormones and all nutrients fall inside reference ranges for his age. Leave ADHD medications as a last resort. Good luck.

How about nootropics. Lot of nootropics available for Adhd. I use piracetam. vincamine. ginkobiloba. Panksgensing. Sulbutamien. meclofenoxate. And thats what is available in my country i suppose there's more available in your country i suppose its better than nothing. I used to take modafinil and armodafinil. And both been giving me bad side effects too like poor sleep heightened anxiety and hyperventilating also labored breathing some times i feel am going to have a heart attack hell it's not worth it to experience this side effects. So i keep them for emergencies only like when i have to work long periods of time.
