I'm currently studying in academy of arts in Tbilisi, Georgia and many things that you mentioned takes place here aswell. we got cool auditories to practice art and really nice professors, but the truth is, most of them are quite old fashioned and I found myself wanting to satisfy their desires and standards which almost wrecked my confidence as an artist. I agree that academic knowledge gives you the power not to lack the skill which is needed as an artist, but don't become a slave of your teachers agenda. nice video btw
You are absolutely right. Acquiring tremendous skill in rendering a form beautifully and with utmost mastery cannot be the goal of an artist, though the skill is very much necessary. It is important to develop a vision. Studying Nature , people and thinking deeply to find one's own voice is the way to develop. There's no short cut to it.
This channel right here is a gold mine, as someone who's always been amazed by the work of masters who come from this academy getting to see just a glimpse of what might be something I'll never have the chance to experience makes me really happy so thanks a lot! You're quite handsome too!
As an artist I am big admirer of Russian master painters, art academy doing great job keeping that artistic lineage alive and sharing the true perception . Thank you so much for sharing
Florence and Saint PetersburgvRussia are where the real art schools are at. Most art schools either teach abstraction or theyre sight size ateliers which only teach one drawing technique. Florence and Russian schools still teach constructional methods along with anatomy, perspective, comparative measurement and composition which allow students to become great imaginative illustrators and great life drawing artists while still having the drawing not looking like a photo or some weird abstraction.
This was very informative and well done! Not long winded, straight to the point. It was very helpful to know how artist are being trained through routines and process, since not all of us will be able to experience this. Thank you for giving back to those of us that will have to walk this path on our own. Beautiful work!
It seems so hard to find a curriculum that is balanced. I see value in both points of view. I still think academic training should be part of all art schools in addition to the conceptual/creative approach.
I heard the opinion that the academic base interferes with our innate childish perception of color and shape, which is actually very good, interesting and one might even say correct, since it is based mostly on feeling and not on “it’s written in the textbook” and I partly agree with this, this is generally a rather complex topic, there is probably no one and only ideal formula - some people can create beautiful art by nature, while others need an academic education to truly reveal themselves
Beautiful and so well said Ksy!! So happy for you to have found these great teachers and this inspiring attitude towards learning and art-making. Also grateful that you share it all with us😊🙏❤
Wonderful advice! I too am just restarting my art journey and simply allowing myself to explore and express my creativity. All the best in your future endeavors 😊
Köszönöm a filmed . Nagyszerű a fejlődés , Jó döntés volt , hogy a Repin Akademiára mentél. Úgy gondolom jó út , ha megtalálod az egyéni hangod , a saját utad. Hajrá !😊
Very good video for all artists in the world, it is so important to learn to draw (see) well. I will certainly continue to follow your development and I wish you much fun and success.
Thanks Ksy for your wonderful video. I have been so inspired by all those on your YT channel. This one in particular has so much good advice, very thought provoking. I have started back to drawing still life, only since the start of the year. In that time have seen a real improvement in my work. Hoping to move towards a more personalised expression and not just representing what’s actually there. Your works are truly amazing, as is your progress. Please keep on creating such beautiful images and sharing your thoughts. PS I adore the music too….💞
I quite like your early works. You look like you are doing well though! I’ve tried a couple of terms at an ateliers here in Australia but as it takes too long for me to drive to it I’ve had to pull out. I still learned a lot and have tried to apply it to my own work.
your work is very impressive !! Thanks for sharing your experience at Imperial Art Academy. I have visited this place and want to spend more time in the academy to learn sculpting some day.
Good talk. Agree with everything you said especially about hyper realistic art that is more mechanical. What a great experience learning there in that school.
Super fascinating video. I always wanted to go to art school but ultimately decided against it due to personal reasons (and the rise of ai, since I work mostly digital :/ ), so getting a bit of insight into what an academy like that looks like and does for you on an artistic level is super interesting to see! Hope you're doing well and keep up the great work! ^^
Hi Ksy! Thank you so much for this video. I absolutely loved the part about the female professor who's teaching you to paint more freely and expressively instead of 'just' academically reproducing. I'm an artist currently working on the same transition and would really love to see future videos expand on this topic if you can. There are many videos that teach academic drawing and painting but I've yet to see anyone go in-depth on how to break free from accurate reproduction and to adapt a more creative process. I know part of it is just creating your own process and deciding on what to change (e.g. distorting figures, colors, brushwork, etc.) but it sounds like this professor has some wisdom to share on how to get there :-)
Спасибо за очередной праздник. С удовольствием смотрю твои видео. Мне нравится смотреть на мир твоими глазами. Ты милый позитивный человечек. Удачи тебе 🎉
I have fallen in love with Koh-I-Noor Red Chalk (Sanguine) and Dark Sepia. I use both their wooden pencils and their 5.6mm leads, loaded on 5340 (Red Chalk (Russet Sepia)) and the 5347 loaded with Dark Sepia (I use the softer Dark sepia lead, on a lighter lead holder and the harder Russet Sepia which is actually Sanguine, on the havier 5340. These work great on Canson Universal or Artbook 180 sketchbooks (same paper) as also on Hahnemuhle 120gsm Sketchbook! I sketch at home, on the go, wherever I go, I always have at least an A6 sketchbook and a pencil!! Nice video, keep up the good work!
hi ksenia, I listened to your video calmly, your academy school is fantastic, it's true I tried to follow a ninety-year-old master named Annibale Casabianca died (i love he) along a rigid Renaissance-style academic drawing path, alone because here at school you get lost. it's true that academic rigor becomes a cold mechanical trap, finally it's a convention that we impose on ourselves, out of frustration... it's important to free ourselves forever, you're right, it took me a while and initially I didn't do it, I don't understand the problem. .. I chose a freer, impressionist path, because the base cannot be lost. an interesting Italian artist on RU-vid was Giorgio Michetti (1912-2019), he used fresco with modern painting. There are opereof Casabianca and Michetti to internet, Your videos are always interesting, discussion is important among us young people as we have a love for painting, you know I respect and stimate you.🎨❤️
Thanks for your instructives videos, are there sculpture classes too, stone cutting or modeling? In France unfortunately (from what I know) there are no MORE academic type schools like these, so it really makes me want to go study there!
The drawing and painting is amazing, I'm glad you found the right school! But, I also want to complment your english skills! I am an art LOVER, not an artist. Many of my favorite artworks, ones that touch me and move me the most, artworks that "say" things that language could never say are "outside the box". Many of these are more abstract; Richard Diebenkorn, Picasso, Gerhard Richter, Julie Mehretu, etc. I am curious as to how a school such as yours addresses more "abstract art"; do you study thiis at all? (I heard you mention Matisse, who I love, but is there more?)
thank you very much for your kind words! I also love Richard Diebenkorn!!!! the way he feels color is amazing! yes, we study modern and abstract art, but not yet formally in lectures, but rather through conversation with our art teachers and on our own, but in senior years the art history program will just reach the art periods closest to us))
I absolutely love your sense of color!! I’m curious, how has the academy helped you step out of strict practice and a closed minded way of doing art? What is different about your art now being in the academy other than gaining technical skill? When researching about the academy, I thought they mostly focused on technical skill and academic drawing and painting, has it been different for you?
Thank you❤️ Of course, the academy is a higher educational institution, mainly specializing in classical education, but there are some open minded teachers who give students a more expanded view of art, showing that there is not one single truth for everyone, art is great and multifaceted)
A lot of what you said here resonates with the writing of a Harold Speed. At least from my point of view. Do you know his book The practice and science of drawing (1913)? Thanks for having this video blogging and sharing!
Saint Petersburg and some other major Russian cities feel like one of the last bastions that actual teach a whole meal course on the classical arts, a shame many others have abandoned it.
I don’t have a patreon, unfortunately in Russia it is temporarily blocked, so I use a site with similar functions - the link to it is in the description under this video)
Having graduated from a so called world class (but not really) art school in the 80s and having had the art beaten out of me by second rate professors I instantly gave up all desire to make a living as an artist. Of course they did not actually show us how we should turn our art into money in the least either. Nonetheless, while you are critical of the idea of being an art "machine" and only reproducing, you should consider that the first aim of being an artist is to fill your belly with food. If it can't do that consistently then you may be destined for a life of hunger. Believe it or not, there is a market for highly representative art. Many actually still like and may well commission such art. The rest is left to chance.
If you are staying true to yourself and not trying to feed the market, the best you can do is to promote your social media. Learn how it works and how to benefit from it. That way, "chance" is more likely to happen. Also, it's crucial to be open to communication, eagerly interact with people, be nice and approachable, so others would be more likely to become your clients.
There's plenty of traditional ateliers everywhere if that's your point. New masters academy offers literal courses on all of these skills. But that would burst the narrative you want to believe right?
I dont get it either Cesar.. this "we are the best mindset" is often made fun of until they believe it for themselves. its a shame the person who made the video actually liked that comment. its a bit prideful and demeaning to the rest of the world. but if you want to carry the chip on your shoulder be my guest@@cesarandrade1987
There are many art schools around the world, even if they aren't atelier schools, that help students become better artists. A real artist is one who makes their own art. Being a real artist isn't defined on where or how you learned.
Could you draw me? Like could I model for you? I’ve never had a professional photo taken, let alone a portrait drawn and it would be a dream come true. Let me know ❤
You have it well understood. Extrapolate emotional sense out of your subject and convey specifically that to your viewers. The paint has to make sense of something ineffable.
I notice all these super old style universities are located in places like North Korea, China, Russia, former Soviet space. And the product is always the same - some kind of peasant person looking melancholically into the distance, sighing about hard life. When you finish education and become master, finally you can do your real job and produce 1001st iteration of the head of Lenin/Mao/Kim Jong Un. In heroic pose in steel factory, in heroic pose in fish factory, heroically in collective farm, Stalin portrait for "Cathedral of the Armed Forces". Also you can make portrait of wife of oligarch. You finally become a super high level copying machine. Am i exaggerating?
I feel like an important thing to be said is "World's Greatest Art Academy" is subjective. Yes Russia is known for its strict dedication to the arts in all forms, yes this school will be a great way to tailor artists. But.... A student of art who studies on youtube and/or uses online mentorships, courses, etc can get the same training with personalized help. even for those who only use youtube, now we have chatgpt. who you can ask what are the core fundamentals to learn on youtube. if you dont know where to start. and with that you can find plenty of materials through youtube, etc. practice and repitition and passion will get you to the same level as someone in an academia. No, you dont have to join this school to get proper training, you just have to search for the information. its out there and available from masters all around the world. I see TOO MANY comments saying that they feel like they wish they could go to this school and telling the creator of the video that she is lucky to be there and not to waste the opportunity as if they dont have the same freedom to get the same training all over the world. and without restricted to an academia structure. |someone else wrote "It seems like Russia is one of the last counties that still has real artists and the love of art inside it's borders." and I could not believe that the OP liked the comment. this kind of thinking is wrong. everywhere around the world are artists who love and live for art.
