What's immigration really feels like? How long does it take to integrate and assimilate in the new country after immigration? I am sharing my immigration experience and how long it took me to adapt and assimilate in Canada, and share some life lessons too. I talk about the initial crisis phase when I learned English and was wondering how to make friends. After that I shared the assimilation phase, where I got accepted to university, and started student life, and then I talk about acceleration phase where I finally built a stable and comfortable life as Russian immigrant in Canada

@@MakeThatChange you are welcome! It's extra hard when you are by yourself with no family members there to give you the much needed support. The country can feel extra foreign to you and you find it difficult to integrate into the culture and the local lifestyle properly. Thank you Anna! Being alone in a new country is definitely a lot harder, I’ve met a handful of people who’ve struggled with loneliness in the first few years. Covid certainly didn’t help newcomers integrate better 😒 I hope you are staying well and safe in there! Cheers 🤗

I may add two important decisions you need to make: 1. You need to know very clearly why you are leaving your home country, and it has to be a very strong reason for that! 2. Why you chose Canada, and not other lands. This is also important to think clearly, even if you have limited knowledge of the land, but without these two, you may not have the strength to stay on and may lose at the end. Migration is a serious challenge to most, and do not expect that other will look after you, you need to relearn a lot of things that you took granted in your home country, so it is not given free of charge, you must know why you are making such investment.

I have just been in Vancouver for one year and five months, which has been challenging. I had a horrible experience in my first two jobs here; the cultural differences are enormous, and even when you are open to accepting and adapting, some people were precisely the opposite and made an active effort to make my life a nightmare; It took me months to recover my confidence, what I advise is go to therapy or at least talk with some friend or family about it, we are not alone and required a lot o ovaries or balls to do what we have done. The thing, as you mentioned, is to be willing to change and embrace that very change we pursued in the first place. So this is a message to every person that is reading this comment, You fucking got it!

This was a great video and reflection! I made a move to Canada as CoVID started picking up last year, staying in Toronto for a couple of months and then moving to Montreal. I can identity with some of the challenges you've been through and I relate a lot to how you said at some point you felt like you didn't want to be so different and sound so different. I am glad to hear you managed to rediscover that pride in your heritage and your personal growth story. We all come from different backgrounds and go through a lot of challenges and it's often easy to fall into the trap of comparing our current situation with the one of folks who might have different endowments that ours. It's always good to reminds ourselves of that. Also, I really liked your modified framework of the immigrant's journey. I wasn't expecting to hear about product management in this video hehehe (maybe YT knows that I have interests at the intersection of PM and tips for new immigrants to Canada) but I am glad to hear you found your way into that and are enjoying it.

Hi Geoff, thank you for your question. It took us a while to think about your thoughtful question. Check in with your newcomer colleagues if you have any, ask them how the assimilation is going or invite them for a coffee. Oftentimes, social integration is the hardest, so doing anything to help them feel less alien and alone would be instrumental in their life! I think the biggest part is just be open and accepting - even if someone has an accent or speaks slowly, listen carefully and be patient. What do you think?

@Make That Change Not sure if I can say it on here! 😅 A Russian friend felt like he paid too much for a used vehicle that kept breaking down. He said, "In Russia we have expression. I pay for dog (male reproductive organ) 🤣🤣🤣

While listening to you I started thinking about my first months when I first moved to china to pursue my studies there...I can relate myself with a lot of what you said and what you have been through,, I was just 18yo, it was my first time to leave my country,, to where? To China!! For what? Not for just a visit but to study there,, it was a very challenging experience, my parents thought I would come back in my first week there,, but thank God I didn't ❤️

We all have our own nature. You came to Canada when you were young, and you were still under the control of family decisions and having to fit in with situations where you were not the primary person of concern. I think you went through many of the same "growing pains" that people your age were experiencing without being immigrants. Good for you!!! :)

Canadian here and although it is not strong i can hear your Russian accent and it is wonderful. Russian was my first language even though I was born in Canada so maybe that is why. Many older family member and friends barely spoke English even though they were born in Canada, so you are doing very well.

i think you ladies have created a great little channel. genuine and authentic. i also liked your simple outdoor visit to nearby nature/parks. keep doing what you do! Would you girls also consider doing a mini series of videos advising cdns on travel to Russia for the first time. Specifically tourism travel. Which parts of Russia are 'must-see'? Foods that are 'must try'? Experiences that are a 'must try'? I have never visited Russia but hope to one day. What you ladies could offer is the perspective from an actual 'local' (as opposed to Western travel vloggers who have never lived there before). Not just Moscow or St Petersburg, but any parts of Russia or the greater Federation. thanks!

Thank you for watching Wile and for taking the time to leave a comment to us! Thank you for the suggestions for the video, we will think about what we could share about Russia. It would be great if we could travel to that part too, when it's safe to do so. We could perhaps start with some Russian foods and how to make them from anywhere?

I enjoyed your video. As an English Canadian I just want to say that although you have a Russian accent your spoken English is excellent. Glad to hear that you have decided Canada is the place to be. Most Canadians know this but as we are all humble we don't tend to advertise it. ;-)

Yes and also - there's nothing wrong in taking time to figure our life out. Sometimes it could take decades. Other than that, I did went through the honeymoon phase but after 12 years, there's a new phase that's coming up: I'd call it the break up phase where I keep thinking of going back to my home country...

@@MakeThatChange Well I guess it's really hard to create a stable network of friends, so feeling like I don't belong. Language is still a barrier even though I'm proficient but it'll never get as comfortable as communicating in my mother tongues. The culture in Canada in general feels quite individualistic to me - so there's really a lack of social cohesion that contributes to my feeling of not really belonging here after all.

We came to this country in the same year apparently. I thought I've been here for a decade only but you made me realize that it's more than that. Its been quite a ride. My situation although very different is still a classic immigrant story. I left my home country 5 years before migrating to Canada so in a way when I landed here, I was in a crisis mode and with a lot of knowledge to fend myself as an immigrant. One other thing to warn to future migrants is that if you come to Canada and spend here those first ten years usually things get better in every way.. And after those ten years, you are inextricably linked to this country. Its very rare to see someone after then years here to go back or to move to another country. The Canadian system is set in a way that after that time you are here till you decide either to retire or die.
@MakeThatChange

Couldn't agree more! How are you feeling in Canada now, more than 10 years done?
@D_isco_D_ancer
@D_isco_D_ancer 2 года назад
@@MakeThatChange It's good now, its lets say "normal" and its what its expected. In any way that is good especially if someone comes from a country that is constantly in unexpected mode.Im at an age that my focus now is to plan for a good and reasonable retirement. Assessing what do I need to do in the next 10 to 15 years to achieve that. Not many countries offer that possibility so I'm grateful that is possible in this country.
