Love how it started out with just explaining things and ended up being a big jamfest. This shows the power of music and modular.

Really informative video, I have benn into modular for just under a year now and am hooked on it. I really like the way you have your drums set up, being able to instantly switch between regular patterns and probability, really brilliant mate.

Brilliant setup. I've been trying to think about how I can get more variation out of life sets with my setup and this gives me lots of ideas. I have a very different module arrangement but I think I can get something similar in terms of options. I've also been thinking about building myself a bunch of passive switches and now I'm definitely gonna follow through with that.

I've just started doing something similar to your percussion after seeing your vids. I use a combo of grids and a triggerman to make my breaks and such. Amazing video and system! I'm slowly getting my plan for my rack together & have a question: would a BeatStep Pro's drum triggers and MI Grids going into a Synthrotek Either-Or (then to drum modules) work in a similar way as your drum setup?
@precarious333
@precarious333 7 лет назад
Yes it would. Either-Or is made specifically for combining triggers and gates so works perfectly for this. You'd just set the jumpers so center of the switch acts as mute. Will not work as well with CVs though. Since it's passive it will drop some voltage so a powered module works best for pitch CV.
@nick9871
@nick9871 7 лет назад
Man, really can't emphasize enough how inspiring your videos are. Do you ever mess with the z8000 live? I seem to use my SQ-1 a lot live because its fairly easy to tweak and understand what I have changed. Between the trigger riot, the grids, and the z8000 I think it might be difficult? Maybe that is what you were getting to at the last bit of your video. I've recently turned my Frames into a euclidean sequencer and using that to advance other sequencers and for drum fills (using your blending of triggers technique) and it completely changed my game. "You can't have enough switched multiples" has gotta be the new "You can't have enough VCAs"....
@derykmoates377
@derykmoates377 7 лет назад
Nick McCarty I've heard u have to be safe doing this with these multiples, but I'm not totally sure. I'd like to know the "proper" way to do this if there is one.
@mylarmelodies
@mylarmelodies 7 лет назад
The proper way would be use an OR combiner like the Lowgain Shortbus, but I've had no issues so far combining gates with Switched Mults, but I've currently got it set up to only combine two at most (things get confusing for me after that).
@precarious333
@precarious333 7 лет назад
Yes, Shortbus or Synthrotek Either-Or both get the job done.

mylarmelodies Thanks guys!
@precarious333
@precarious333 7 лет назад
Sure thing. Glad to help. Short Bus allows you to switch 7 inputs between 2 outputs. That's good if you want to share patterns between 2 HH modules like in this rig. Whereas Either-OR gives you 8 channels with 2 inputs and a single out for each channel. If you are looking to A-B gates to multiple drum modules I'd suggest Either-OR. 8 channels is really handy and you can chain them as needed; say 2 kick variations in channel 1, 2 more into channel 2, and then channels 1 & 2 running into channel 3 allowing you to switch between 4 patterns or even combine them. All depends what you're looking to do.

Loads of ideas n insight here - gets ya thinking on a deeper level when it comes to making proper danceable music with a modular, live. Thoughts on mutant hats, bd and clap? I see you have the snare, but tip top everything else. Just wondered if there was any reason why you'd not gone for more Hexinv stuff - hp reasons, overall sound, simplicity of the tip top bits?
@mylarmelodies

Kinda as you've said - just trying to tradeoff HP/functions and keep control where I need it and back off elsewhere. In short, all the Hexinverter stuff sounds amazing, as does all the Tiptop. Mix 'em up!

How are you liking that Jove Jupiter filter?(Seems like you kind of answered that here I guess!) I used to have the Tonestar 8106, really great. The new Vermona twin filter is really amazing for CV inputs...you get SIX, 1/2 of which have attenuators. I was kind of intrigued by their upcoming 808 module, but a friend of mine who has a real one said he didn't thought it sounded that much like one. I understand why people do it, but the masking tape thing is always something that seemed very tacky to me and strange when juxtoposed over thousands of dollars (or pounds) worth of fine instruments. It seems to me that you should understand your instrument well enough when you spend enough time with it that you mostly know where everything is; if you make a slightly error in switching up A vs B you can correct it and will be provided feedback, and live, no one will notice anyways. Another way to achieve analogous results of variation of rhythms e.g. probability gates I've been playing around with is to not even necessarily be having different patterns of when hat is open or closed at a given time persay, but if you change the timing slightly (or more) frequently, you'll also achieve different densities of different instruments per time, e.g. speeding up on the closed hats and slowing down on the open hats--been experimenting with this via complex cv clock modulation to my MFB Tanzbar Lite via Erica synths midi to clock/clock to midi, which I can also do independently of main melodic sequences (In my case from Stillson Hammer). This is sort of like what jazz drummers do. I think you sort of describe some of that here. Funny how if you think about something enough a lot of people end up in the same place/similar ideas.

Question: If i use 2 sequencers with built in quantization and add them trough the precision adder will the result be the same as having a quantizer after the precision adder? Or will the resulting pitch be to unpredictable for Live use?
@LoudPaul1
@LoudPaul1 2 года назад
It wouldn't be the same as having the quantizer after the adder. For example, maybe seq1 is playing +2 semitones and the other one is doing +4, if you just mix them without another quantizer it will play a tritone, even though both of those sequencers are in the same major scale.

How do you think, would it be cool if there was a module that transmits all input signals wirelessly to the reciever module? Not for audio, but for clocks, triggers etc. And you could make all kind of switches with wireless switch module with buttons, switches and stuff. I'm going to make a prototype - I do not have a modular myself, but seeing all that wires needed to control drums is pain.
@plentas

wires are part of the fun!
@RATelectro

Shure, but maybe sometimes, with more or less fixed systems like this, it's not? At least separate cases could be connected wirelessly.
@plentas
@plentas 7 лет назад
+RAT I didn't want to sound rude or tell, that the idea of conecting modules wirelesly is bad! if you CAN make a prototype of that kind, I'm pretty sure that there will be huge need of it, just to declutter things here or there. in general It's a great idea, especially when talking about more fixed parts of the system.

RAT doepfer standard has a bus you can send clocks and cv (ithink)on but no one uses it.
@precarious333
@precarious333 7 лет назад
In order for that to work with normal modules the receiver plugged into the destination would be required to produce a voltage up to 10v, meaning it would have to carry that charge in a battery or plug into an outlet. So you'd either have big bulky battery packs on each or a cable running to a power source. Doesn't make much sense. Could work with digital modules designed with this in mind but, really, what's the point? Just combine them on a digital buss and allow routing of any source to any destination. You can already do that in many softsynths or even hardware synths. The point of modular is the hands-on sensibility, the visual nature of following a cable from source to destination, a signal path rooted in physical connection, and literal voltages flowing between modules. Then there is this: www.percussa.com

@brianobush
@brianobush 7 лет назад
I have both; One is great for percussive elements or single shot synth stabs. Radio music is basically like a radio and has many "stations". However, in my latest rig, I have replaced the radio music with the one since it can function as the radio music but is more functional. One doesn't require preprocessing as much for the samples, as the Radio music does (which requires conversion to raw format).
@LaboratoryGrey
@LaboratoryGrey 7 лет назад
Thanks for the response. Have you compared it to with the "looping=0" setting in the Radio Music config file? It seems like Radio Music can do exactly the same thing and more? Which is where my curiosity comes from, though you seem to be saying the opposite? XD

Gotta ask, Is the Z8000 solution difficult to use for thr melodies? I realise it is quantised to turn out alright, but I think I'd want a bit more precise control than knobs, like a stepper acid or even a metropolis. How do you find it is to play with?
@derykmoates377

NOLNV If you don't mind me adding my 2 cents, I don't really see any difference between sliders and knobs as far as sequencers go. As long as they're quantized. Tiptops quantizer is great and pairs well with the z8000, it makes it very easy to do transpose and scale switching which can also be modulated.

A really interesting idea is the idea of building a live performance system in software and playing it with MIDI controllers. It could totally be done (that basically what Tim Exile and co are doing)...especially with Reaktor blocks?

Yeah, I really like the idea of having something digital but semi screenless, semi modular. Maybe with some kind of button or switch or wire patch bay. I like the idea of modular analog synths but I think wires everywhere would drive me crazy.

Building a controller with the number of knobs and switches of a modular would be no easy task. You should look into the Axoloti too if you want to go down this route.

+geecen axoloti looks cool, thanks for the tip off, but ill probably use generic midi controllers with a raspi or a CHIP for now. I do want to make some custom ones though.

as of this moment, I am trying to put this together as a Reaktor ensemble. :) Thanks for all the insights mylarmelodies!

i wonder how much the whole system like this weights? :)
@precarious333
@precarious333 7 лет назад
That would depend mainly on the cases. Out of curiosity I just weighed my fully loaded 6u 244hp wooden Goike skiff. 18lbs isn't too bad. My plastic 6u 208hp Tiptop Mantis case is about 14lbs. So the rig in the video would probably be about 30+lbs. Modules have different weights so that's just a rough estimate.

Haha, it seems that you are so skilled that you hardly need any! Thanks for the videos and Hearology buds thing. It really makes me realize how and when to upgrade.

Have you seen the Pittsburgh Switch? It's not quite the same as a switched multiple but it's what I use to instantly reroute audio around my system: pittsburghmodular.com/switch/

I dream of wires. How do you not get confused or lost by the maze of cables?

When you build it yourself, it's not hard to remember what does what quite honestly!
