When Mercy was diagnosed with cancer at 16, she thought she knew this horrible disease. She had done award-winning cancer research projects, she shaved her head to raise awareness of and funds for cancer research, and she knew the pain it caused a close friend who lost her father to this dreaded disease.
"I quickly became painfully aware of my ignorance as to what a cancer diagnosis truly meant: a type of suffering you cannot even begin to grasp until it’s you. "
But, through it all came a reprieve in the form of a wish. "My wish kept my life force, my imagination and hope, my belief in joy and an after. One of the few things that kept me rooted in reality, with my eyes focused on the future instead of my possible grave, was this opportunity to create a wish."
