Little late to the party, but I'm bringing a fresh angle. Rather than talk about the story, character, and tone changes the latest Live Action Adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender introduced, I'm taking a critical eye to the martial arts, stunts, action, and effects in this latest show from Netflix. In my opinion, the first episode not only changed a great deal of the setup from the original cartoon, but it also removed the intricately woven martial arts that helped make the franchise into one of the most influential western animations ever.
Gone are the vertical fists, the shaolin movements, flowering hands, wing chun trapping, bagua footwork, all in favor of movements that make it feel more like Harry Potter wizard duels and less Hong Kong Action Cinema.
This is only the first episode, and I plan to break down each one individually so that I can track its progress throughout the development of the show and figure out what happened to the martial arts in this media.
