i remember when this happened and as a pearl fan my reaction was "finally they buffed marina" (i had trouble liking marie in the 1st game because she could be so mean to callie sometimes and i hadnt wanted that to happen again😭i love all the idols now tho)
Maybe the theory of “Savage Marina” was that it was pushed by the head honchos in charge of Inkopolis News, thinking that snark sells. But turns out as the game progressed, they got to know Marina a little better behind the scenes, hence the on-screen personality adjustments. So it’s possibly she just needed the OK to peek out of the proverbial shell.
Funny enough, I actually read about this in passing after my late intro thru S2. I don't mind Marina snarking at Pearl, but it needs to fit or it doesn't seem right. Also, Marina is a fan of the Squid Sisters, so there is the thought that she was trying to mimic Marie a bit.
I wouldn't say that's really censorship.. maybe a mistake in the characterization of a character on release. But it's pretty funny ngl. Savage Marina was great, and i like that she would occasionally still get some spicy quips in, later on in splatfests and the news from time to time.
its technically a censorship but not in the traditional way of what people consider one. They censored her old personality but completely removing/altering it but yeah im glad they retained some later on but I wanna see how much more of a savage Marina could be
@@ShurikanBlade I wasn't a Splatoon player back when Marina was mean (I actually didn't know about it, I got Splatoon 2 a few months after the Final Fest, I got it in early 2020 because I had played as Inkling in Smash once and I recognized the Inklings on the cover of the game and so I decided to buy Splatoon 2 instead of ACNH)
Yeah I remember that update. I really did see it as kind of an issue though. With Callie and Marie. The rivalry was so entertaining to read. And they really went ALL the way with it. Nintendo started getting complaints from parents about Callie and Marie’s rudeness so for off the hook they designed characters to be nicer Even in the splatoon 2 American version. The rudeness felt very “half assed” compared to Marie. Even then it just made Pearl and Marina watered down personality’s of the squid sisters, with less interesting burns. The nice nature between them works a whole lot better not only for the story. But for reading the stage intro. However I will always forever prefer the squid sisters show. Very entertaining.
Do you know that marina is actually supposed to have a crush on pearl? The Japanese version of the Splatoon base website describes her as a "maiden in love" towards pearl, but this was changed in the English version
I'd figure it was Marina, she shows a little... too much skin in all her outfits we've seen her. She's so mean to Pearl, she one time told Pearl "Aren't you a rapper, how do you not know this?"

I used my phones translator on the official lyrics of one of their songs in the Splatune 3 album booklet. I don't buy what you're saying, one of the titles auto translated to "Busy Vacation feat. TENTACLES." Like, I'm not even kidding it even had it in all caps. 😂
I remember this, I did not care about the duologue however it was fun to read online. I would not be surprised if that is just her onstage personality and what we see her now is her actual personality / off stage personality. Pearl is Pearl on both off stage and on stage.
Same thing with Mr.Grizz in splatoon 2. In the original japanese version,Mr.Grizz was this polite character,but in the english localization,he's practically pissed off all the time. In splatoon 3,they did change him closer to his original Japanese version,still retaining traits from his localization. (I'm talking about AT Grizzco,not in the Story Mode.)
i think i played splatoon 2 right when it came out . im suprised i didnt catch this change over time. but i was a filthy casual lol (never even completed story mode).
I feel like she still has some shades of savagery here and there. According to TV Tropes/English Version of Octo Expansion, she used to act like this because she felt she had to to be more interesting to fans. She (Nintendo) toned this down later on, though.

I did know about her savage lines, but as a Marina simp i prefer soft Marina more mainly because otherwise she would have been too similair to Marie. We can only have one sassy idol

(Semi off topic) That's most likely why quite a few fans think she's in love with Pearl. The only place thats the case is the manga, (and there's a million and one things in the manga that contradicts the game's logic). She seems to act very friendly the few times she interacts with other characters and likely would treat them the same if she got to no them (like agent 8 for an example). Overall it most likely was done so she's less of a Marie clone Edit: nevermind, the manga's not by nintendo
hello i am one of the last remnant of the original Pearl fanbase,, back at a time i couldnt play the game but watched video and video of it and was totally obsessed with Pearl ! i never understand the hate and she had always been the best girl
she kinda was from what i heard in the japanese very its simply hinted at often Marina likes pearl but its never established but this was lessened in all other versions

Savage Marina was fun tbh, as a Pearl fan, it did hurt to see her insult and be kinda mean to Pearl sometimes because they're supposed to be✨girlfriends(I AM A PEARLINA STAN) that care about eachother very much✨ Though, What made me hate Marie was her mean dialogues and i really wouldn't want to hate Marina for that too, she's such a sweet heart but if they made her unnecessarily mean like Marie then,,,, idk
