Brent was having problems with a door on his job. Why was it failing? Turns out his shop didn't build it. Brent breaks down the door and identifies 3 things that caused it to fail. Can you guess what they are?

Great insight into door construction, definitely very interesting, I am a retired self taught specialist Jointer/cabinet maker, I have similar books that shows you detail drawings of mouldings how doors and windows are constructed, My main timber for making external doors external windows what is Douglas Fir , all sill for frames I always use Oak, and most of my doors are made 2 - 3 inches thick, with 5 point euro lock , And over the last 15 years I have made doors and windows for 7 barn conversion, all of my joints are mortise and tenon, on my Wadkin EKA 5 head machine, I have even made Europe doors and windows that open outwards, I now live in France, I still have most of my tools and machinery, I have noticed that I lot companies are use in dowels to construct the framework doors, et cetera, and they are saying that because of modern glues they are a lot stronger than a mortar and tenon joints, I don’t believe that is Correct, I have even restored doors that were made back in the late 1700s 1800s , old traditional methods and they had stood the test of time, The main failure being improper maintenance , And the lack of decent paint nowadays, Everything new that I’ve made I’ve even spent the time and treated everything with wood preservative, I have gone back to the UK over the past 3 to 4 months. I’ve gone past some doors that I’ve made around 45 years ago. Apart from they need painting, I wish I was there doing it., they still look very good condition, And I wish I was still back at work , Over the past three months, I have been trying to construct a workshop, adjoining my property, I’ve had to make it out of timber, Concrete and cement and block work nowadays is extremely expensive, Keep up the Great territorial I’ve been watching your program for quite awhile now all is very interesting. I think this is the first time I’ve actually left a comment. , From the Moulin France,

I’ve had the privilege of rebuilding a set of French doors from the early 1700’s they are directly in the Texas sun most of the day and still look beautiful… I’ve found that white oak, black cherry, make excellent exterior doors they are in the top three most rot resistant woods in North America, very stable also thanks for the info keep it up!

Black cherry, really? That's interesting since it's quite affordable these days ever since cherry cabinets went out of style. Prices for white oak these days are up there with walnut.

The double panel detail makes a lot of sense, I have changed out multiple panels in doors that were not that old. I just replaced an alder front door that was only 5 or 6 years that the panels were cracked. I think I will experiment with it to try to retrofit to double panels. Thanks for the great content.

Brent is a bit of hidden gem. He is kind of the go to guy if you want good historically sound well built lifetime house work. But he is not the guy for building stuff fast and cheap, or for generating follow up repair business. Brent wants all of us to build it right and only have to build it once.

Too much information, not enough entertainment for the average pleb.
@CheeseBae
@CheeseBae 2 года назад
@@ehisey gotta disagree with "building it right." Building it the old fashioned way, and certainly the best way to build with hardwoods, but the truth is there are too many people and not enough quality lumber to build like the old days. His workmanship is second to none, but he's also an elitist. The truth is this level of workmanship is for the rich. Nothing wrong with that but let's call a duck a duck. Most people will not be able to afford his way of building things. A cheaper modern door will suit most people fine. But it won't last 200 years! Most people only live in the same house for 5-10 years. They don't care about 200 years, they care about eating.
@ehisey
@ehisey 2 года назад
@@CheeseBae And none of what you said is counter to anything I said including "build it right". I have rehung, reparied and replaced a lot of modern doors. 5 or 10yrs is pushing it for most new "cheaper" doors. If your out working a quick build stock plan neighborhood, Brent's doors are not even in the books becuase the houses are not going to be good for 10 years, much less a hundred. Heck, some of the companies around here can't even get the houses to make it 1 yr before needing major repairs due to cheap building practices. On the other hand when working on a family estate for the 3 or 4th generation owner, we are looking at doors and windows built to this kind of level since it is probably being updated for the new grandkid to inherit. And in to days market, you cant afford even cheap houses

A learning experience. But not a pleasant discovery for a builder who stands behind his work I suspect there may have been an unsettling period of wondering “what else” for this project and for other projects. Hopefully a one-off substitution for what might have seemed to be a good reason at the time.

Was just watching this one again and noticed your Bosch jigsaw.... I picked up an old Craftsman 315.17280 Auto Scroller last night for 20 bucks and wow.... 1" stroke, and the shoe is THICK and about 4" wide! This was my dream jigsaw when I was a kid and I am not disappointed.... As a professional I know even the good Craftsman power tools weren't the best back in the day, but this thing is SOLID and I will be using it a lot for my jobs

@@BrentHull the blades are available everywhere near me, but I do have access to a lot of places being basically in the Chicago suburbs.... Yeah the old Craftsman power tools made in the USA 🇺🇸 are pretty good... could probably say the "Dewalt" of those days

Old American made Craftsman and Montgomery Ward tools are better than much of the Chinese made tools are now. I have a Montgomery Ward bench grinder that's practically silent when running and takes a couple of minutes to stop because the bearings are such high quality.

Very interesting. Here in the UK, veneered doors or veneered furniture is still seen somehow as inferior. The reality is that a well built door with a thick veneer is much more stable than a solid wood door. We had to build a new front door for our (partly) 18th century house. We were instructed to use solid timber and with full length vertical planks). You can try arguing with a Council Conservation Officer (who seemingly has never built anything in his life and has never studied the successful and the failures) but you know that he is never going to back down. All we could do was to build it using a good external timber (one of the European oaks) with narrow growth rings (tree grew in harsher climate). It’s pretty well protected by a porch so that it only really gets wet through the atmosphere and gets no direct sun. Reality is that it warps. We can go a week with the bolts sliding home nicely and then a month where you can’t open the bolts because the timber has moved. A successful door is not just about cost. You could spend a fortune on nice timber and it still won’t stand the test of time. It’s also about knowing what timber to use and how to use it. With internal doors, the choice of timber comes from a wider list but the construction remains important. For an external door, the choice of timber is much narrower and the construction continues to remain important.
@CheeseBae

Brent uses solid wood for his cores. He just glues them up like butcher block, which orients the grain vertically. It's basically a cheaper way to get quartersawn-style vertical-grain lumber by cutting and re-gluing flatsawn. Whether it's quartersawn or reglued flatsawn the effect is the same, more stable lumber. If painting the door I don't see any reason to put a veneer on it, personally. Just seems like a waste of energy.
@theofarmmanager267
@theofarmmanager267 2 года назад
@@CheeseBae well, here in the UK, butcher blocks consist of end grain; I don’t think the doors built by Brent have end grain as both the faces. As I understand it, the doors from Brent are made from what we call staves; that is length of the chosen timber with the long grain to the faces; the staves may be the entire length of the door or shorter and joined by finger joints. With current adhesives, unlike when I started, the strength of well glued finger joints is as good as full length staves and considerably better for the environment as timber that would otherwise be burnt can be turned into something useful. As to whether it’s a waste to put any veneer or face onto doors that will be painted, someone with deeper knowledge than I will have to answer that. I’ve certainly never seen a commercially-made door of staves with no veneered faces. I would be concerned, until someone whose opinion I respected tells me otherwise, that you would still be able to see the joint lines of the staves even after painting.

Thanks, the glue lines of the core or glued up boards will eventually show through the paint. That is the reason the veneer on the outside is necessary.

I’m not an expert, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. Is the internal panel gules to the styles and rails? If so, is there a risk of it cracking along the joint lines due to expansion and contraction. Thanks for a very interesting video. Would be good to see a video walking through your construction technique if you felt you were not giving away too many secrets.
