@@S_man89 that is incorrect, as the law reads, any trailer with a gvwr of 10,001 lbs or more requires a Class A CDL. My experience is tube style frames are prone to rotting from the inside out. In upstate NY , the salt kills them. Also, with the temperature changes we experience, the insides of the tubes can condensate and lead to rot. I prefer an I beam or channel frame.

In NC you only need a class A license if over 26k GVWR, if you are not in commerce (for hire/CDL). Class A drivers license only requires you to take the safety portion of a CDL test. Other than that it's the same license as a class C. If the towing vehicle is licensed for farm use you are also exempt.

@michaeldankert1962 8 месяцев назад
In Michigan we have to go get a (F) endorsement on our license, then we can drive/haul anything in farming operations, as well as can your family/farm employees. The F endorsement requires a 60 question written exam with no driving test. Just FYI, the Secretary of State didn't even know the type F endorsement even existed until she looked it up. Lol

rules change state by state, but are more in line when you start crossing state lines. im sure most of us have heard the craziness that CA has implemented in their CDLs for private citizens. here in ND, (without crossing state lines) i can drive a truck up to 26K and pull a trailer up to 10K and not need a CDL. DOT, DOT, DOT. Just get a J endorsement, that way you can run any weight trailer as long as you are under 26,000 lbs truck and trailer combined. So Ram 3500 that can pull 15,000lbs with a J endorsement is 100% legal. truck is 8,000lbs and trailer 15,000lbs, 23,000lbs is still legal and don't need CDL as long as you are under GCVWR and 26,000lbs

Pushing the 26k barrier need not be the hassle you are making it out to be. 1) a VAST majority, if not all, of 3/4 tons can haul a 16k trailer without breaking the 26k barrier. Some 1 tons can as well. 2) if buying new, have it down-rated. If you have a 10,100 GVWR truck, instead of limiting your self to a 14 trailer, get a 16k trailer and have it down-rated from the manufacturer if buying new. That will give you the heavier duty axle, tires and frame without breaking the 26k barrier. Just don't haul over the rated value on the road. I had my trailer manufacturer rate my enclosed 10k trailer to 9,990 lbs on the manufacturer's tag, to keep it under 10k. In retrospect, I am not sure what I gained other than skipping the reflective tape on the side, but all I lost was 10lbs of legal payload and a minute on the phone. On the other hand, if like the example above, you are only pushing the CDL-A barrier by 100 lbs, you could have a whole lot more of an impact. Asking the mfg to put a lower number on the paperwork and ID plate is an easy way around it.
@jasongrinnell1986
@jasongrinnell1986 10 месяцев назад
If I had a 10,100 GVWR truck I would get a 15,900 GVWR trailer to have a GCVWR of 26,000. This is legal all day long unless you are registered in Comufornia.

I think so too. This video raises concerns and overly stresses about needing a CDL if your GVWR is above the limit. Everyone I have talked to about it just roll their eyes. I was told the highway patrol does not care about what your weight could be they care about what your weight is.

@@41crow each officer has their own discretion. As the law states and what your insurance may or probably won’t cover if your trailer gvwr is over 10k lbs and you don’t have a class A cdl you’re in for a rude awakening if anything happens. It doesn’t matter what kind of trailer or tow vehicle you’re using, if the trailer gvwr is over 10k lbs you need a Class A CDL, that’s what the law states. Salesmen are trying to make a sale and I know what happens out there and I’m saying it’s not right, the law as written is what will get you in trouble in court my friend.
@41crow
@41crow 3 года назад
@@codyg7936 Your statement is not entirely true. It does matter what kind of trailer you are hauling, RV's have exemptions (if we are being pedantic) I have talked with several people that haul dump trailers and a professional truck driver CDL and they have all just smirked when asked this question. So just buy an overbuilt trailer and have the manufacture slap a 10k GVWR on it.
@codyg7936
@codyg7936 3 года назад
@@41crow that’s terrible advice for someone, the federal law has no exemption for an rv, certain states have non commercial classed driver licenses and are very few. You’re saying to get a 16k trailer down rated to 10k and still put 5+tons of payload in it, if someone hits you, and you don’t have the have the right credentials you’re breaking the law and your insurance company doesn’t have to cover ANYTHING if you don’t have the right license and coverage. There’s a lot of liability being thrown around, don’t let it fall on you. I’m giving out the facts and recommending from my own experience, I too was a professional truck driver (Owner/operator), I’ve spent some time with Dot officers on the side of the road and every time they couldn’t find anything wrong with truck or trailer. The law is the law, follow it for your state and get the right license/insurance so that you don’t have to worry about losing your business or freedom (prison) because of trying to beat the system. The moment people hear commercial vehicle they see $$$, especially if they can pin it on the operator of the bigger vehicle in the event of a wreck, better safe than sorry my friends.

Ask 100 state troopers the same list of 10 questions and ur liable to get 100 different interpretations based on other factors that change the answer to each question. I had a "tough guy" try to bully me in the way station, I had a letter from the attorney for my company and 4 pages of dot exclusion for our industry. The "tough guy" read some of it and stopped and wanted to fine me. It wasn't until I was "forced" (otherwise I would have to accept his ticket) to read 10 paragraphs later where the document addressed his assertion. It was hard for me cause I'm barley literate when it comes to reading. We argued some more. I told him to read the whole thing so he could get more context. His supervisor came back from lunch 45 minutes later and said oh yeah he had heard about the exemption and to let me go. That's the ONLY reason I did not get written up for a violation. Interpretation is never ending art of legal ez

The biggest issues I've found is that the prep and paint don't hold up in the rust belt. 3 yr old trailer and it's a rolling heap of rust. If you hook up to a trailer with a gvwr of 10,001 lbs or more you better have a Class A CDL or you will be breaking the federal law. Some states have their own laws for non commercial things such as campers and if your state doesn’t have such a thing then you still need a Class A CDL to pull your 14,000 lb gvwr camper as far as the feds are concerned.

26,001 lbs gross combined weight rating(gcwr) is class A cdl IF the towed vehicle(s) have a 10,000lbs or greater gross vehicle weight rating(gvwr). A single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001lbs or greater or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000lbs gvwr is class B cdl. That is directly from the CDL handbook in the chart that shows which license you need. Obviously, the trailers you're talking about meet the class A requirement, but it is beneficial to specify or quote the exact rules. I can have a class B and tow a wood chipper because the gvwr of the aerial lift truck is just over 26,001lbs and my wood chipper only weighs 5,500 lbs and is rated at roughly 6,000lbs gvwr.

If your combination is under 26k you're non CDL, your interpretation of the 10k lb trailer rule is incorrect. You can register non combination and tow a trailer under 10k and remain non CDL so long as your GVCW is under what you are registered at, even if you are registered over 26k.

I have recently spoken with a compiance officer and he said that if the combined gvwr of the truck and trailer excedes 26,001lbs you need a cdl. I hold a class a witch allows me to drive anything up to 80k. I can pull a fifth wheel, goose neck, or bumper pull as long as the truck is rated for the weight i am pulling as well as the trailer. The cdl depends on the combination of the truck and trailer as well. If you excede the class c rating then you need to get a class b licence if you are only planning to use bumper pull or pintle ring trailers. If you want to pull goose neck or fifth wheel you have to have a class a licence as it goes by weight and the combination of truck and trailer. If you dont plan to pull anything over 26001lbs then you dont need a cdl, dot numbers, fmcsa sticker, or an ifta sticker. After your truck tag excedes 26001lbs youare subject to all fmcsa/dot rules and regulations.

That's completely wrong, the type of trailer has nothing to do with the CDL class, only the weight. A vehicle over 26,000lbs GVWR towing a trailer under 10,000lbs GVWR is what a class B CDL covers. A class A CDL doesn't cover "up to 80,000lbs," it covers ANY vehicle over 26,000lbs GCWR towing a trailer over 10,000lbs GVWR.
@michaeldankert1962
@michaeldankert1962 8 месяцев назад
That's how I understand it. Nobody ever goes into detail when they describe the 10,001 lb rule. The DOT says if you have a GCWR of 26001 (AND) "KEY WORD HERE" Trailer load exceeding 10,001lb, then a CDL is required. It doesn't say (OR) a trailer load exceeding 10,001lb. So if you are below GCWR of 26,001lb, but are pulling over 10,001lb, you are still ok?
@mattsmith9270
@mattsmith9270 7 месяцев назад
@@michaeldankert1962 From what I understand if the combo is under 26,001 the weight of the trailer doesn't matter, and you don't need a cdl. if the combo is over 26,001 and the trailer is under 10,001 that requires a B cdl. If the combo is over 26,001 and the trailer is over 10,001 that requires a class A cdl. Also each state has its own rules.

That 10,000 lb rule, check your state. It's also not enforced everywhere. You're supposed to have the medical card and all here, but it's not enforced. 99% of the trucks pulling dump trailers here don't have DOT numbers. That's the same for a tandem axle trailer. However, if you were to get in an accident & were not in DOT compliance, you can expect a bunch of tickets and fines.

All right I am confused. In TX I can have a truck rated Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) 10,000 lb. (Curb Weight 6,800 lb.) (Less than 26,001 lb) and then I can hook up a Trailer with a max GVWR 10,000 lb. (Curb weight 4,500lb) with a Class C, so how does hitching a trailer cause me being fined since I am not over Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,000 lb.? Note: Truck Max Payload is the amount left over after subtracting Truck GVWR by (Curb Weight+Wieght of driver+stuff in and on truck+ Pin/hitching point weight of the trailer(10%/15% of load on tongue and 15%/20% of load on gooseneck/fifth-wheel) and the Trailer Max Payload is the amount left over after subtracting Trailer GVWR by (Curb Weight+ anchoring equipment) Granted that the combined would exceed my truck's towing GCWR of 19,500 Lb but have not found too many GVWR 10,000 lb. (only 9,980 lb.) The best practice is to go to the scales empty and then when loaded to make sure you are not over

A 3/4 ton truck rated at 10k can pull a 16k trailer without a cdl. GCWR is not an estimate. Its literally the exact ratings. If you are at 26k GCWR, that is not a commercial vehicle. 26,001 is the start of commercial vehicles. There are two situations where a 10,001 and over trailer GVWR apply. First is with a GCWR over 26k. If your GCWR is over 26k and your trailer GVWR is over 10k, you need a Class A CDL. If your GCWR is over 26k but your trailer GVWR is 10k or under, you need a class b CDL. Second situation. Anyone with a trailer which the GVWR is over 10k needs a medical examiner card. This is not a CDL but a doctor saying youre medically fit to tow heavy loads. The MEC applies to all trailers over 10k GVWR, even if your GCWR is 26k or under.

Federal DOT only comes in to play if your are in a commercial vehicle. So depending if this is for personal use or buisness, 26001 doesn't make it a commercial vehicle but for most states it sets the standards on what license is needed. Some class A CDL some Class A non-CDL some Class L like Florida.l The state sets the standards on what license you need. Just because you had to have a commercial license does not mean you have to have commercial plates and DOT numbers. There is so much misunderstanding with all this. I have a semi truck in Texas tagged and plated like my pickup to haul my mega truck personal toy. Texas only requires me to have a Class A non CDL to drive it. I do however have a Class A CDL license.
