Running uphill to the trailhead may not have been my best idea. Running from our lodging added 2.8 miles and 500' of gain before I got to the first step.
The Manitou Incline is 2768 steps and gains 1900' in 0.82 miles. The average grade is 42% but goes up to 62%. The hike is strenuous. While I was in marathon shape, I didn't do any specific training for the climb. As it has become more popular, the city has had to made some adjustments to accommodate the volume of hikers.
Here are three steps to get you started:

If you're adventuring to the trailhead or getting dropped off look up Manitou Incline Hike or Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. It's the same parking lot.

Bring hydration, calories and sunblock.
