The Manitou Incline, or simply “The Incline”, is one of Colorado’s most famous hiking trails. Gaining over 2000ft of elevation in less than a mile, the trail is the remains of a decommissioned funicular railway. Famous for its sweeping views and steep grade the Incline has in recent years become a focal point for an eccentric, off-kilter community. “Inclined”, dives into this community and explores how a one-mile section of trail has managed to bring people together from all walks of life.

A month ago having family dinner. My niece ask me if i want to hike the incline for the 1st time with her and i said let's do it!!. I don't work out and I'm 236lbs. Out of shape lol!!!! Took me 2hrs. To get to the top. Loved every minute of it! Did twice in 2 weeks and planning hiking more before winter starts. I don't track my steps or time.i just enjoy the moment.

I used to go hike Incline 2-3x per week when I lived in COS 11 years ago. It's amazing to see how it has blown up and rails are all fixed up. I even blew up my ankle running down in the moon. I really miss that place. Getting very emotional watching this video as I miss my late dog who always joined me for every session there. Rest in peace Sally dog.

I first rode the incline in 1972 and did a little of the trail at the top. The joke that the operator told us was, "If the cable snaps, there are two springs at the bottom to stop us... Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs!" I came back with my family when my kids were in high school and was broken hearted that the incline had shut down. Didn't realize you could walk it. My hats off to those who do it every day!

My best friend moved to Manitou. Manitou is a very unique place and she would tell me it's so unique and there's so many crazos around there because of the magnetic energy coming off the mountains there 😄 I'll never forget walking down that main Street in Manitou and seeing a sign in a restaurant that said "Help Wanted-please somebody somewhat normal"😜🤣

We used to do the Incline every Thursday. Would meet up at the bottom at 0630, "race' to the top (my best time was 33+/- minutes), run down the backside on the Barr Trail, and then go grab breakfast at "Uncle Sam's Pancake House" (I don't remember it being called that, but I DO remember the A Frame building). GOOD times. I MISS Co Springs almost every single day.

Awesome. I was at the Olympic Training Center in CO Springs for a few years (2006-2008), and the Incline was a major bragging rights test. It was a great equalizer between sports. From cyclists, to triathletes, to speed-skaters, all the athletes were always trying to best each others' times up it. These were the "private property" years, so the trail was definitely "unimproved". It's crazy to see the crowds in this video! Kudos to the volunteers who have made the incline what it now is.

Mt Beacon in New York had a trolley that was operated until 1978. It was the steepest trolley incline in the world at one point. It rose to a 1540 ft with a maximum gradient of 74% and an average gradient of 65%. They have been looking to revitalize the trolley but I think a project like this would be a lot more economical and probably better used.

I used to live in the Springs around that time too. The remake of the incline looks great, and a lot safer. I was able to do it a couple years ago when I went back there on vacation. The old school incline was a death trap, but it was a great place to be back then. Like so many places around the area that were gems for hiking, now they’re covered in tourist and people. That’s a good thing though, at least people are exercising. The Punch Bowls was the best hike in the Springs, but now you need to book that hike months in advance.

I'd seen awesome photos of the Incline from Rob Lucas for several years before I actually got to do it. In 2016, I planned a two week vacation that would end with the family crossing the Grand Canyon, so our first stop was Manitou Springs. We did the Incline and the Pikes Peak Railway to get acclimated to the effort and altitude (we live in VA around 300' above sea level). Then hiking/sightseeing in Moab (Arches, Canyonlands), Bryce, Zion, and finally the Grand Canyon. We started at the North Rim, camped at Cottonwood, Bright Angel, then hiked up the South Rim. The Manitou Incline was crucial in getting the family ready for that final climb up the South Rim. This trip was the best family vacation we've ever had and I have great memories. My youngest was three at the time, so lucky for me he doesn't remember much, so I'll get to take him back. I wish I lived closer, I'd love to have access to the Incline.

Wow, that looks fantastic! I'd like to try that Manitou Incline at some time in my life and I have the perfect place to train for it. I live in a small village in the north of England and we have here a Victorian-built staircase made up of 220 stone steps running up the side of a reservoir. Each step is slightly larger than those you'd find on a typical flight of stairs in any normal building. Pretty much unique in the whole of Britain and virtually unknown outside the area - and I reckon it'll stay that way. It is the "personal" workout space for me and many local people here. When the virus panic is well and truly over, I think I'll be heading to Colorado!

The world is filled with good. Why do we ever get sucked into feeding so much bad with likes and views? Let’s all try harder to break this pattern. Start with liking this. Know that there will always be those 76 people who will dislike. They must be miserable. Pity them and praise the others. We have a little place nearby that has a lot of stairs. Nothing Like this but it has that same effect on people. More towns need a place like this. Thank you for this channel and thank you for this video.

This is a really beautiful story about a community coming together and friendships being made. I was in Manitou springs this summer and we were not able to do the climb because there was actually a fire going on the hill that same day. But I will be back to do my first ever run on it one of these days.

Kokohead Trail in Hawaii is very similar to this. Also, the Hawaii Haiku Stairs aka Stairway to Heaven but there's no running up or down that one.

I hiked the incline a few weeks ago and it was the hardest hike I’ve ever done. It wasn’t too physically hard on my muscles (at least not anything worse than other hikes) but my lungs felt like they were going to explode (I live at sea level normally). I thought I was going to either pass out or vomit once I got to the top 😂. Glad I did it at least once but I don’t think I would ever do it again haha.

I’m heading there this week, I’m from Florida. I’m worried if I can do it, between the elevation and I’m not in the best shape. But I’m going to try🤷🏻‍♂️

@@logicandlaughs so the day I had scheduled to go it was going to rain, so I headed south to black canyon of the gunnison and Mesa verde instead. But I found Colorado to be beautiful and can’t wait to get back, and eventually do the incline.

It's on my list! These days my favorite big hill is the Snow Creek trail in Yosemite, which gains 2600 feet in under 2 miles. If I lived anywhere near The Incline, I expect I'd be climbing it as often as possible.

I visited Manitou Springs for a meeting in 2018 and the "Incline" was pointed out to me by a manager at the hotel. So I did mainly a walk up - with a few jogging steps. As an avid runner, it is a very appealing and compelling experience. I came down on the trail and THAT too was wonderful.
