just wanted to say that as a new knitter I have discovered that the length of yarn thread in a ball matters more than the weight lately. I am knitting now a 40s vest, it calls for 17 stitched in 2 inches, and the best match of yarn I have found is approx 400 meters in 100 g ball (4ply socks yarn). Actually, your blouse/sweater is adorable and it doesn't matter that it looks different from the pattern picture!
@MijnWolden

Sad part of vintage patterns is that you don't always find references to the original yarn and how many meters per 100 grams that was

I'm finally planning my own hand spun knitting project and seeing all the problem-solving it will require is really eye-opening. Moral of the story, DON'T TRUST THE PATTERN SUGGESTED YARN AMOUNT! I'm super excited to start.

That’s indeed pretty much it! Even with commercial yarns, I find the amounts stated on the patterns are often quite arbitrary. All too often I’m left with too much yarn. Some times it ends in a terrifying game of yarn chicken. That’s why I like spinning for specific projects so much. I get some extra fibre (or prep extra, depending) and I know I can always spin up some more if needed. This means I often have very little extra yarn, and the fibre that is left can be blended into another project or, if it’s a white fibre I have a lot of (I have a stash of ‘standard’ fibre) it can simply go back in the stash. I find knitting scarves, wraps and shawls has taught me a lot about my default comfort spinning (lace weight yarn). I have found out roughly how many grams yield a specific amount in yards/metres. Size of the finished piece is less important with this kind of garment. That made for less stressful knitting when using that precious homespun yarn. From there, it’s easier to ‘graduate’ to garments that basically consist of combined squares or rectangles. TLDR: don’t trust the yarn requirements of the pattern. Trust the gauge swatch more. If needed, consider calculating yarn requirements based on that swatch. And remember that adjusting needle/hook size can help. Because as Jente stated in other videos, the wraps per inch can be iffy as well.

I haven't yet knit anything that wasn't a rectangle, but I, too, SO wanted to try out those sleeves when I saw Engineering Knits' video! The colors in your sweater are so pretty together, and I think puff sleeves would be adorable.

@genier7829
@genier7829 Год назад
Good idea to make the back different, it looks good. I think the main difference to the pattern image is not the sleeves but the ease. The vintage version is very close-fitting.
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden Год назад
Yeah that is true as well. But that's a commonly recurring problem for me with patterns that are basicly rectangles. If I want them to be comfortable in the bust area, they're going to be loose everywhere Else 😅

It's amazing how you explain what knitting may be, it's not just the result but the feelings you have when you do it since the spinning to the smell of the wool (that warm, reassuring ,cozy smell)and feeling the soft warm wool on you. Knitting is an experience. I love those colours you combined. And, by the way, when I was younger I worked as a painter of stove tales (I just know the word in German , "Kachelofen")and my boss used to say to me that an imperfection was not a mistake but an added value. You can fit this principle to all hand made things. 😌

Gauge swatches are my go to for any knitting, unless I allow chaos to rule and simply throw myself into a project with abandon. This goes for hand spun as well as for commercial yarn. I do tend to spin for specific projects.

It does look a bit wide, yeah, but personally I think the sleeves are super cute, especially with those colours. I wish I could knit with my handspun, but I barely knit at all, and figuring out things like gage etc myself is beyond me. I am planning on weaving it though, first for a few decorative items to get a good feel for it, and then for clothes. Good thick winter skirts are impossible to find, especially in my size, so I think handspun handwoven wool fabric should fill that hole nicely. (On a side note, thank you for having the captions on pretty much immediately when your videos go up. I don't have to wait five hours to actually watch them.)

I've now decided i want to use up loads of my earlier skeins and make it into a blanket for me, because knitting with my handspun is awesome. 🎉🎉🎉

Je hebt nu een hele grote swatch gebreid toch ;-) kan je nu berekenen hoeveel steken je echt nodig hebt. Why spin if you want it to look like commercial yarn it has no life. It is a spring sweater with the wide sleeves maybe rein it the sleeves doing the head then taking some of the width out would give you enough to do a tighter cuff or just spin a bit of the darker ool when you get home and knit a tighter cuff,or ad shirring elastic to the bottom edge of the sleeve
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden Год назад
Shirring elastic is what I had in mind! But I could indeed use one of the other colours for the cuff too.
