Knitting a Victorian Tam with very magenta handspun yarn (

Hello friends! Picture this: a Victorian warm wool winter hat but in the Pantone colour of 2023. Or: how to be fashionably oldfashioned. And of course, because this is Mijn Wolden, one spun from local Flemish sheep and dyed with natural dyestuff. Historybounding, historic kniting, spinning and dyeing: everything that makes my heart sing.
Together with some of my fellow fiber arts content creators here on RU-vid I have accepted the Pantone 2023 challenge, wherein we tackle the colour that is Viva Magenta. I was inspired by this challenge to make a historic garment in a very 2023 fashion. A victorian garment in a today colour, what's not to love? So in today's video we will spin some Flemish sheep wool (what a surprise), dye it with cochineal bugs and knit a 1894 Tam o' shanter pattern. Perfect, as I was missing some Victorian headwear to finish off my Victorian / Edwardian winter outfit.

Love, love, love the finished hat! Starting with 8 stitches on a set of 4 needles is not quite something I can manage, at least not in a hurry. I think you need to invest in a mortar and pestle. Perhaps you could persuade your husband to get you one for Christmas. As an old reprobate who still thinks in terms of English needle sizes, here are the translations for the sizes Mrs Henrietta Whosit used. 14 - 2 mm 13 - 2.25 mm (that size was always a bit tricky to find) (2.5 mm is sometimes described as 12/13) 12 - 2.75 mm 11 - 3 mm 10 - 3.25 9 - 3.75 mm

I do not knit, it has always been too difficult to me (I feel more comfortable with painting or bricolage for example) but watching you is so relaxing that I always gladly watch your videos and love the way you work on the wheel (I don't knit but I have my grandmother 's ancient wheel at home ...)and things you create, this hat is lovely!!!!!!!!!

We have those all over the place around here. It's interesting, when you harvest them, if one gets squished, it looks like you cut yourself. It's vibrant crimson red. I've never dyed with them though.

Love your videos, I 've been spinning for 5 years on spindles only. I finally bought a spinning wheel, I have to assemble it this weekend, I'll have to learn to use it, I suppose that it is a bit different than to spinning on spindles, However, i,'m looking forward to finishing yarns faster. Ashford kiwi 3. It is small, foldable and portable. FYI. I'm in the USA. I love your enthusiasm. I can see how much you love this art. 😀 continue to post. Do you crochet? I can only crochet. I have made many hats, scarfs, summer shirts, sweaters, cardigan, and ponchos. I wear them whenever I go out and people always comment on my outfits.

@@mariepla1370 Crochet was my "gateway drug" into fiber arts so to speak. Although theoretically I knew how to knit from a younger age than crochet, but it was crochet that really kicked me into gear. But then I started crocheting more and more designs that mimicked knitting and thought "I'm being stupid because I know how to knit", and then the knitting bug bit hard :D

Why yes I do feel seduced 👀 those floofs looking fine. I feel you on the local wool thing. I've been trying to source some wool from France but it's been an exercise in frustration, and the couple of online shops that cater to spinners.......... sell ashford wool. I'm glad to have been able to try a well referenced breed to start off with, but the idea of importing all my wool from new zealand drives me crazy. It would be easier if I could process fleeces probably, but I really can't do anything if it's not at least skirted... Edit: oh, some matching mittens or wrist warmers might be fun? Btw I love the little bow you made with the cord, it really gives character and is so cute.

I'm really lucky with my local farmer. But that also is not skirted of course, need to get the poopy bits out myself. There's so little shops that cater to spinners here. We europeans are being bereft of our heritage! It's infuriating.

@@MijnWolden yeah! North americans have all these online shops and subscription boxes and fancy fibers and here I can get... Some Of the ashford catalogue lmao. Maybe there's stuff on etsy, I haven't tried that yet. Honestly I would gladly do the skirting myself, especially if it means getting to work with farmers directly, but unfortunately it's physically impossible T.T

The tam o’shanter is perfect! Great job deciphering such an old pattern. That’s a gorgeous shade! When using DPN’s, I cast all stitches onto one needle, then I spread them out taughtly (to avoid twisting) and distribute them to the two or three other needles. Too fiddlely the other way!!

@@MijnWolden unrelated question! My daughter is a tapestry and rug weaver and she recently got several pounds of scoured but unprocessed fiber. Most of it is Navajo churro, which is an endangered breed here in the US. Anyway, she is struggling with how to lightly process it (leaving it mostly rustic) to be able to use it in rug weaving. I’m curious as to where you may have gotten your hand combs, because they look like they might not have cost you $175! Thanks for any information you can offer. She is definitely on a budget.

I used cochineal to dye some handspun, but for me it ended up purple, not red or magenta. It was a few years ago so I dont remember what I used as a mordant but it must have been what affected the colour.

I was wondering… you call the fleece you’re using ‘Flemish sheep’. What would the Flemish wording be? I’m toying with the idea of convincing one of my neighbours to part with the first shearings of lambs. I’d like not to look like a total idiot when asking about the breed. Another question: how soft is that wool, as I would like to know what to use it for. My daughter is autistic and with her sensory issues about scratchy clothing, I like to be prepared. She usually takes an interest in what I make from the very start. And I mean the VERY start: she’s been keeping n eye on my alpaca from the moment I brought home the raw fleece through the picking and now the spinning. LOL

Flemish sheep = Vlaams schaap. It's a medium wool, not the softest, but nice and rustic. Belgian milksheep (= Belgisch melk schaap) is much softer. But for sensory issues I might suggest alpaca, for sometimes the scratchiness is a result of the lanolin, rather than coarse fibers, and alpaca is both really soft and has no lanolin in it.

@@MijnWolden - Thank you! I use several commercial wool yarns and blends she has no issues with as long as the yarn isn’t too chunky and the clothing isn’t restrictive. Mostly I tend to use baby merino blends. Unfortunately for me knitting time-wise, her preference also goes to lightweight, and let me tell you that it takes a LONG time to knit a sweater out of lace weight yarn… 😅 Alpaca blends and silk blends or pure alpaca are perfect for her. The cost of commercial alpaca yarns is so high it contributed to me starting to spin. I found an alpaca farm about 10 minutes from where I live and they’re willing to sell me the raw fibre. I’m actually waiting for their call as soon as they’re done shearing this year. From last year’s shearing, I was able to snag the complete yield (skirted and all) of their prize animal. It’s so soft and the most gorgeous deep chocolate brown, and a dream to process. How do you feel about Texelaar? Is it softer than Vlaams Melkschaap? Or more rustic? Edit: you probably noticed I’m a bit on a binge watch of your videos. Subbed too. A Flemish spinner and fibre enthusiast who is also a chaos goblin. How could I resist?
