Thank you for the very informative lesson. As a former public school teacher can assure you that 90% of the school basses are maladjusted. Lewis and Glaesel and Roth all send the basses with the strings set much too high; they just get worse from there. I bring this up because there will be a fair number of people watching the lesson and not being able to achieve the results that you demonstrate and not knowing why. What is the string height on you bass at the octave position? Great lesson

i love your philosophy "playing the upright bass is either easy or impossible" for me sometimes it seems impossible haha

Wow. That is encouraging to a 5 foot tall woman who wants to try bass again after trying a bit 30 years ago. The more I see and try, the more I think it's not impossible, even for me.

Thank you for your comment, no you do not need more weight in the bow arm when you use your large muscles to help your left hand. I use the large muscles for the right hand as well.

Very useful, simple exercises like this are very helpful. One of my biggest problems is my waste of energy while playing

Thanks for the lessons! I'm looking for some more info on the usage of the bigger muscles (chest, back, etc,,) Any suggestions, further readings ? I play the guitar, and using these muscles instead of the forearms muscles makes a world of difference!

Everyone will hate me for doing the seagull, but I think it’s a great exercise 👍🏻

Great video. I really appreciate, that you share the knowledge. I have one question though: At the end you show how bass weight is pressing strings into your fingers, so you do not have to use thumb force. Do you use this technique for play, or is it just for exercise to rise awareness of big muscles in body? I tried to use it in playing, but I have troubles with open strings. I am playing mainly pizzicato and with open string I have no bow to stabilize instrument. Is this technique only handy with bow playing or can it be adapted to pizzicato playing?

Helo Thank you for your comment. Yes the main purpose is to draw attention to the large muscles and to how little it really takes to press the string. from my experience, working with many jazz players, who mostly play pizz, they tend to press even harder because pizz requires a bit more than the bow. Further more, it is very important to keep the thumb on the neck also for more indication and information while shifting. I also recommend that you do the left hand Pizz exercises from video 4 especially with the thumb... i think they will help you relax your left hand. best regards Michael

Thank you for your video's! My my bass has to go on surgery because he had an accident, so i can't try it out at the moment.. But i do have a question: If you press the string (with your bigger muscle groups), do you know if you need more force when you play louder with the bow? I think it is needed, but i am not sure. Could you please help me out? Christian

Thank you! I really do not mean to advertise my book but there is more information about it and about other subjects that might be of interest to any musicians. I just heard that it was mentioned in a site for trombone players as someone found it helpful. I have worked with guitar players and I found that my ideas about coordination were well received. I would also try the left hand pizzicato for relaxation. I am always happy to discuss things: klinghoffer@jamd.ac.il

"People are wasteful creatures" though he has an expensive bass and clothing, way to contradict himself eh? Most European teachers are not humble at all, just because you have a talent in music does not mean you're the next Nelson Mandela or a humble philanthropist, I know the message he was trying to give but, seriously stick to the lesson.

It’s not that deep. If you listened a few more seconds, you would hear that he said after that, “they(people) waste energy,” and it relates to the lesson as many people will try really hard to press the strings but could just use their large muscles as he demonstrated on the lesson. what a way to be racist toward Europeans and take things way out of proportion. I know it’s been 10 years and people change, but you were a real bitch with this comment.
