TIP: With stranded, rather than cut the cable where you want it leave 20mm and strip where you want it leaving the insulation on the bit you're gunna cut off, then twist the insulation with fingers or pliers (depends on Gorilla grip) then cut it. That way the stands will be tightly twisted and not splay when you're inserting.

I went out to a cooker about a couple of months ago for a housing association tenant to reconnect it after another electrician had disconnected it due to a fault which had apparently been fixed and just needed reconnecting.Oh and Cat litter trays on the worktops! I decided to check the cable already connected at the cooker itself and found no insulation from arcing on the out going manufacturers live terminals and the plastic separating the terminals had broken away so the wires were very nearly touching together so I condemned the cooker and told the tenants and the housing association it was dangerous, then a couple of days later the same job came through to reconnect the same cooker!

You'll find that in the manufactures instructions say that a HR flex is to be used anyway to connect the oven or the hob. We had been splitting the oven and the hob to 2 separate connections, single socket and a cooker outlet. But our NICEIC assessor once asked us why? And he explained that the oven is a fixed appliance and will not pull more than it needs so a dual cooker outlet can be used on a single plate. I'm not a fan of it and still prefer a single socket and a seperate outlet. Just passing on the information I was given regarding connection of cookers which may be of use, it may just help you on an awkward job.

One of the wire terminals burned off the light bulb wire (someone didn't turn off the breaker after i told them to!) I have a 16 gauge terminal, but it looks like the light wire actually has a 22 gauge. The terminal fits but the wire doesn't look as snug. Also the terminals look like a different color, not sure if the old terminal color due to oxidation. Does the new terminal have to be a special type, or are any terminals okay?

There are dual outlet cooker connection plates on the market. You could take both hob and oven cables to one of those. As for 2.5 flex, BS1363 intended the maximum cable size to be fitted to a plug should be 1.5.

A 13amp oven could go on the 32 A (6mm ) supply . It’s a fixed load that is unlikely to overload . As long as you can meet fault protection then there’s no problem.
@Mattja1
@Mattja1 4 года назад
Personally I'd just put a 4mm from that cooker connection plate to a single socket right next to it and plug the oven into that (or closest place there's space for it). 4mm so it's not too big to terminate into the socket/fcu but big enough for the cooker connection plate. Added bonus is the oven can then be taken right out the way easily if you ever want to get behind it.

@@robswingler I agree, however I recently heard that it was one of those fans in a bathroom that didn't have a 3amp fuse, caught fire and the manufacturer denied responsibility and said the electrician didn't follow manufacturers instructions so the sparks took liability. What is your opinion on new builds if you have worked on then I mean? What I find a lot of the time is the kitchen has a double stacked integrated single oven and microwave on top. When there is a fault and we need to come out and repair either of the machines the wiring is so tight that the machine is impossible to remove without disconnecting the wire from the fused spur itself? I know it entirely depends on where the wiring is supposed to be fitted but would you add some more slack to the original cable so the machines are easier to access?

Heard 2.5 but need more detail please of flex preferences and why not cable. Socket for cooker. What was the oven plug socket with isolator originally used for? If the socket with isolation was not available what would you have done ? What was happening at the board with the 6mm cable. Correct breaker ? What labelling was done at board after for hob ? Would 6mm have been selected for this hob if not already in place ? Should there have been an isolator for the CCU you found and used for the hob ? Minor works certificate issued ?

@iansyme3535
@iansyme3535 3 года назад
Seems a little over the top if only drawing 2.3kw .... unless it was actually stated as more on the cooker plate? My Pyrolitic oven draws something in the region of 3.5kw which is why it is on it's own 6mm feed cable back to the consumer unit. Understandable for such high amperage but I would be tempted to just connect a 2.3kw oven in to a 13amp socket! Then again, I am a DIY man , not a professional. Guess there is more contact area on a fused connection plate as opposed to two thin metal strips touching the legs of a 13amp plug. I never thought they were a very good idea for high load current. If it is a single way socket it is easy enough to convert to a fused spur I suppose. Just my tuppenceworth!

Considering the cost of some of these ovens, I find it laughable that that the enclosure where you have to terminate into is undersized. Why don't they double the size of where you connect considering it would cost pennies. Also(whilst I'm on my high horse), it annoys me when ovens come pre flexed with only a short length of cable. Should be 2m in my eyes. Rant over

These companies unfortunately are run by accountants!! I see this all the time. Also person designing it should be made fit it, they’d soon learn.

That CPC was shorter than the line conductors at the cooker end. I like to keep mine longer in case of some kitchen fitter “yanks” the cooker out 😋
