The verve were always better.... Oasis really just isn't that good... Songwriting or otherwise The verve however were amazing... Got into them when nobody heard of them... Then they came out with bittersweet love song.... Huge hit.. Funny story my wife at the time always thought it was an oasis song... I bought the CD for her and wrote Oasis on the front of it... She got a big laugh out of that.
They sold 10 million records in the US. Morning Glory peaked at #4, Be Here Now at #2 & Dig Out Your Soul at #5 on The Billboard 200. First 3 albums went Platinum too. Definitely a decent enough impact.
Oasis sold a shit load of records in the US. And if they had have played the game more (sucked more corporate dick) then they probably would have sold 10 times as much over there. Liam & Noel were absolute wild cards in the 90s, the US public just wouldn’t get it. Their loss 🤷🏻♂️
@@emmetlynch14I love Oasis and I’m from the US but your comment is kind of lame. It wasn’t about bowing to corporations…it’s the simple fact that from Be Here Now onward their albums declined in quality.
I hate this bullshit notion (mainly from the British press sadly) thag they didn't crack America when they cracked it open wide and what people don't realize is Morning Glory has sold more than any Coldplay album, yet Coldplay are apparently so successful in the States. I think Oasis have sold over 5 million copies in the US alone, and another 7 million copies ontop of this of their back catalogue. Some disaster that is 😂
@@darrenthomas7402 I'm American and Oasis is a non-entity in the US. They did not crack America "open wide." After the hype proved to be just hype, they couldn't give their records away here. Their music isn't played on American radio and they aren't discussed by anyone. The Brits pathetically keep trying to hype this mediocre guitar band as some second coming of the Beatles but they don't even come close. All of their songs are just a tuneless wall of guitar strumming over nasally, whiny singing.
I’ve been saying this for about 30 years! Here in the UK (& Ireland) they were literally the new Beatles, still to this day to many people in this part of the world they are bigger than The Beatles, Liam is selling out Knebworth on his own without Noel 🤟🇬🇧🎸🎵
One thing this video didn't mention about the difference between Oasis in the 90s and 2000s that James Hargreaves said was that Noel started allowing the other members a bigger say in things like songwriting etc.
Definitely Maybe is the GOAT and Masterplan is the most epic B-sides album ever put together. I'm not sure an Oasis reunion would be the same, but I hope they can make up as brothers at least. Life's too short to hate. Don't look back in anger boys.
Definitely not a reunion Liam's peak voice has changed & gone not his fault a real illness caused it. But I'd go just because especially if it was knebworth 2026 30 yrs after I went on my 22nd birthday we'll 4 days before but who's counting.
@hotrodones74 Totally agree I prefer a lot of the b sides especially to some tracks that got released. Bring it on down was supposed to be there debut track. But you know the early problems they had with DM so Noel wrote supersonic in a back room allegedly in 10 mins.
The first song I heard was D'ya Know What I Mean from Be Here Now. I live in America, and at the time it was playing on all the alternative rock radio stations and on MTV constantly. I thought the video was cool and loved the song. I think I was 13 years old. Be Here Now was one of my first CD purchases. Anyway I just happened upon this video, and didn't know a lot of the history. I'm listening to the song right now and feeling a lot of nostalgia! I don't think I've heard this in many many years. Anyway, enjoyed your video!
its funny Oasis was one of those bands in America you were expected to outwardly hate, but most people secretly loved. If it was on the radio an you were in your car alone... you would turn it up to 11.
Owen Morris credited a lot of managing to capture their live sound in the mix to, also 'brickwalling,' a technique used to make the record come on the jukebox loud as f@¢k, but also to "turning Noel down in the mix, & turning Bonehead up." And I gotta agree. The definitive live sound of Oasis - strictly for me, of course - is Earl's Court '95... And Bonehead can be heard, loud & proud, in the mix... With Guigsy even being turned up a bit.
Good job, bro. I'm 48 so lived through it all and it was when I heard the 4th album I realised they weren't the same band anymore, but those first 3 albums and the B-sides are some of the best songs ever written. I have an emotional attachment to DM and the B-sides because they remind me of my sons mum but if I had to pick my favourite Oasis album it would be BHN. From 95-97 they were as big as The Beatles.... Not to be confused with *better* 🙏🏻
I’m American and Oasis is one of my all time favorite bands. My friends love Oasis and if Noel and Liam ever unite I’ll mortgage my house to fly anywhere to see them.
Great video man even if you took two shots at America haha. Definitely maybe is one of my favorite albums of all time. We don’t all have shit taste over here.
definitely maybe is also my favorite oasis album! i discovered it when i was 14 via tumblr and it introduced me to rock music, so it holds a special place in my heart. my favorite song by them is "listen up" though. i can't believe how it didn't make it in the album, it's so good!
While I will admit the first two Oasis albums were great, they dropped off badly after that and comparing them to the Beatles is a joke, I thought that back in the 90's when tabloids started doing so and I think it now
Personally, I’m actually glad Oasis ended and I can’t really care less if it comes back or not. I personally really vibe with High Flying Birds (Chasing Yesterday is genuinely one of my favourite albums ever made). I feel like Noel as a songwriter really branched out more after Oasis ended and it really shows (to my ears at least ).
I don't see them getting back together. The personalities are too strong, and they're both doing so well without each other. Noel has proven he doesn't need Liam, and Liam has proven he doesn't need Noel. Liam still seems like he would welcome a reunion, Noel doesn't seem interested at all. Whatever, the music lives on.
I would like you to write about one of our Greatest British Rock and Pop Acts; XTC. Also I think OMD ( Orchestral Movenuveres in the Dark) and James could do with a spotlight video made about them as well.
Heathen Chemistry has great singles. The first half of that album is up there with their finest work. The rest of the tracks feel like B-sides though. The Truth is well rounded and consistent. Keep The Dream Alive is arguably their most under rated track.
They obviously love The Beatles but when they started the Sex Pistols, Stone Roses, Slade and Bowie were huge influences. Listen to Fade Away. Its Punk Rock all the way.
Like most music groups, i think how they got signed is part mythical and part false. Im sure Johnny Marr tipped off Alan Mcghee, or one of his associates, to have a look at the band when they were performing in Scotland. The story is apparently Alan McGhee used to date one of the girls in the band they shared the bill with. But if tour ex boyfriend was a music executive wouldn't the girls at least mentioned it to Oasis and let them know they have industry contacts? I just find it hard to believe it was a completely random occurence. Im sure Johnny Marr had a bigger role in them being signed than people realise.
Not anything like the Beatles in terms of success. Their music is far from memorable, and Noel 'The Riff Poacher' Gallagher, is an arch-plagiarist who claims false-authorship of superior artist's ideas.
Mitcheltheowl - the song's by oasis were brilliant Noel's lyriccism is outstanding and a fantastic contribution to British 🇬🇧 music So he's not macka or Lennon but he's noel and does things his way can't knock him, he's a success story, what have you done to contribute to the 🇬🇧 music scene, exactly nothing at all, just tone it down n stop hating 🇬🇧 👍.
@@Krysiss I'd check out Peter Hook's book 'Substance- Inside New Order ' and 'Chapter And Verse- New Order, Joy Division And Me' by Benard Sumner. Both are very good books.
And Then Comes Green Day, The Beatles Of The 2000s (Atleast That's What I Think They Is), But Got Their Downfall And Rise And Downfall And Rise Again After Their Stupid Trilogy Album & Father Of All
I really dont care if they reunite or not. I am not the least interested in seeing old versions of bands uniting and playing. It never does it for me. The energy and the vitality is gone
I agree that Radiohead's experimental and innovative attitude resonates much more with the Beatles. That being said, describing Oasis as trying to sound like the Beatles was just lazy 90s journalism. On which Beatles album would Columbia, Supersonic, Bring It On Down, or even Slide Away fit in? Most guitar bands were just as influenced by the Beatles as Oasis, and many of them, including Blur, sounded far more like a Lennon-McCartney rip off.
One ok album and lots of cack. Oasis didn't change anything. Even if you're not a fan of the Beatles you can apprectiate what they did. Never mind The Beatles, Oasis weren't even The Slade of the 90s.
Oasis-- the biggest band in the world (in england) the beatles dominated america-- oasis was a 2 hit wonder there-- sorry,, they are nothing like the beatles
1990s music was a decade of its own When 1990s was over oasis was over, i was surprised they lasted as long into the new century as they did. I personally did not hear a song of theres after 1998 The 1990s was a decade all of itself, and the music in that decade was the last real decade of music Todays music is for druggies populations, and singers off there heads smoking rubbish, and making music for people who smoke rubbish. There is no energy to music this century, what ever it was that music stars used to do, they simply do not do anymore. Without nirvana all these bands would of not been mainstream Reason oasis was over this century, was they were on 1990s wave of energy that nirvana created, and then it just went away, and no band ever had made that new energy wave again Nirvana was last time a new energy came into music, and since then nothing. This century music is just boring.
Isn't it interesting that every single generation talks about their youth as if it was the absolute peak of culture? It's much more about you being young than about the quality of the music.
The Beatles haven't sold even 1 billion, but they are The Beatles. They are The Gods. Nobody is near them. Oasis by the way have sold 90 million, not 65 or whatever was in your mind.
Ive never felt Oasis to be genuine, so the music as good as it probably is, with that thought in mind also sounds disingenuous. Unfortunately the conceited nature of the Gallagher's was all over the media so I never bothered listening to the music. Worst of all they put other bands down to elevate their own perceived position. I hoped by watching your presentation I'd find a bit of sympathy and maybe leverage to listen to their albums. But to date i see no redeemable qualities. Your work is good I look forward to more.
I do think them putting other bands down is immature and I disliked them at first too for that very reason, but to me Definitely Maybe and Noel's work in the 90s definitely feels like it came from his heart. I wish they did focus more on the music and less on the press but that's the 90s for you, everyone was trying to be a diva.
Haahaahaa!!! Radiohead??? They were Roger Waters wannabes, which was a poor excuse not to get in competition with the greats of the day - Suede, Pulp, Blur, Oasis. Nobody gave a sh-t about Radiohead.
