How Octopath Traveler Changes Key

The full-on key change isn't all that common in modern music, and game music is no exception. So I was surprised and intrigued when I listened through Octopath Traveler's soundtrack and heard key change after key change popping up throughout the entire thing. The soundtrack ended up being a perfect example to use to talk about different ways that composers change keys, and that's what I explore in this video. Enjoy!

RDR2 soundtrack is ok, but not in the same league as Octopath. It's the sound engineering, making tracks dynamically change as the action does, that impresses.
@RainbowLizardOne
@RainbowLizardOne 5 лет назад
People are suckers for nice John Williams/Joe Hisaishi/Early Hans Zimmer pastiches, but it's important to realise that there's other ways to write music that can be very, very good, and arguably work better than Octopath's music does contextually. If all music for films or games was just the type that Sounds Nice in the classical sense, scores like Psycho's or Dunkirk's (to use very well known examples) wouldn't exist.

I reckon you're right, that Nishiki purposefully leaned into key changes for Octopath. He's said that he wanted the melodies to stick in your head, so he tried to repeat them as much as possible. Changing the key just lets you repeat the same thematic material and thus makes it more familiar and earwormy!

How to compose music for octopath traveler: 1. Find a key 2. Find a second key 3. Think of how to get from one to the other 4. Make melody and harmony

Common-tone modulation is another cool technique to use to change key. For example, in Twilight Princess’ Ordon Village music, the piece begins in C major and the melody of the A section ends on the tonic C. The melody of the B section also starts on a C, except the chord is Ab major, so the C is now acting as the major 3rd of the chord. One sustained or repeated note (often in the melody) is all that is needed to link two distant keys if the two chords share a common note. It’s a really simple and effective way to modulate imo without having to use the pivot chord technique.

It will be dungeon crawler game with a large overworld. The setting is a fantasy world, but the main weapons are guns. Each race in the game will specialize in different types of guns, with different levels of magical capabilities depending on the race's exposure to magic. Also, 2 years later, my musical style has changed so much that when I get back to it, I will rework most of the tracks I wrote for it back then. This is hands down my favorite game soundtrack in a long time, and I'm definitely going to use this video as a reference for all of the musician friends I've been gushing about this game to. Also, can we talk about how incredible the non-stop modulation is in "Decisive Battle II" for a sec? That piece blows me away with its construction - the constantly shifting tonal center, the use of pedal tones (especially right before sudden jumps), its massive, colorful journeys to return back to G minor from all sorts of crazy places, and the absolutely superb orchestration for maximum musical intensity.

Right, he did one video on one song saying it's sleigh bells, but a bunch of songs I mentioned have no sleigh bells. There's more out there, and Winter Music sounds distinctly wintry, so what makes that wintry feel?
@AndNayNay
@AndNayNay 5 лет назад
A lot of those songs might not use sleigh bells but they do use bell type instruments like xylophones with lots of echo/chorus effect added (often emulating the sound of ice) like in Cold Man's stage and a few others you mentioned. There is also the classic 'wind' fx or drone chord often added low in the mix like in the Ice Cave Theme in OoT, Blizzard Buffalo stage, or North Hemispheres in DKC. Long drone chords (often minor) make the song sound more desolate as you could imagine in a snow storm. I don't think a few of these themes sound very wintery though such as Chill Peguin or the Himalayas theme... maybe just your brain visulizing the level when you hear it.

I don't really understand the notes behind a composition. I'm just someone who really enjoys game music with leitmotifs and slight changes within a theme that represent the feelings of a character or other small nuances. I'm pretty sure I didn't understand like 70% of what you were talking about but I still enjoyed the video. Thanks 👏

I absolutely love 9th chords but had no idea that this game had them in its score for so many songs. Thank you so much for doing this one, I forgot just how crazy it is for a writer to make songs, let alone for someone to direct their madness/genius

Composer used Key Change. It was super effective!

"Destination key" sounds, appropriately, like something I'd have to find in a JRPG.

Amazing job on your videos! A must have on your idea list is definitely Silent Hill's soundtrack.

11:20 Ophilia the Cleric's theme is one of the most moving character themes I think I have ever heard. It tells us so much about the character just by its clever musicality and I am absolutely blown away

I don't know anything about this game, but this might be my favorite video yet. I love cool modulations, and these were very cool.

Would have loved a video on Bravely Default and Second, but Octopath does just well too.

To put it simple, I purchased a Nintendo Switch and this game after listening to your analysis. I couldn’t resist the retro Square-RPG feel and specifically the amazing OST.

Octopath literally the only reason I bought the game was the soundtrack

@@StewNWT It's crazy how effective this soundtrack is!! It's the first time music has such an impact on my will to buy a game. Even the praised Final fantasy's music or Xenoblade didn't hit me this hard... If I wasn't poor I'd have bought it a month ago! Happy 2020, by the way.

After watching a few of your videos, I had no idea how much there was still to learn, and how far it can go. Honestly, I bet you could have taken this topic much further than this. I'm personally an untrained musician with some understanding of theory, and I eat up videos with content like yours. I'm definitely a huge fan, and plan to watch everything, so please you know how grateful I am that you started the channel. Absolutely love your content.

This is amazing. As a professional musician and an enthusiast gamer I have never found videos explaining video games music in more detail. I felt such a lack of such content to the point that I even contemplated starting a channel dedicated to it. Fair play my fellow music nerd and great job on the video :) keep it up!

Man, I love this channel, now that I have sadly left music school, it helps me keep my brain up to music theory (and to the english key signatures, being a french classical musician ^^) in an entertaining manner ! Also, I like how cheery you sound ! Keep up this amazing work please ❤
