Thank you for your videos :) They are always pleasant to watch!! I just heard about the new jackets from Jack Wolfskin. Maybe you got to know this brand in Germany. It is called Texapore Ecosphere and is made out of recycled PET bottles and the Membrane is made out of left over pieces from other products. They have a video on their website to explain the new concept :) www.jack-wolfskin.de/texapore-ecosphere/ Another brand I really like is Patagonia. They repair your products, encourage second-hand purchases and produce recycled materials :)

My favorite is Decent Exposures in Seattle, WA. They can adjust their own pieces even after years of use. If you change size, they can make their bras, underpants or clothes fit right again. Or, if elastic has stretched but the fabric still has life, they'll replace the elastic band so the item gets more useful life in your wardrobe. Their stuff is really high quality and several organic options, too.

I love my MUD jeans! Recently I was a little clumsy and broke off my zipper. I could send them back in reusable packaging and get them repaired for free! There are videos out there that show how Goodwill sends some usable clothes to India, where they are also recycled. Women are shown sitting in front of massive heaps of clothes, sorted by color, removing buttons and zippers. There is a struggle with how the dyes affect the water/land, though. I use some old, but clean, clothes as stuffing for dog beds and toys!

Wow, thanks for the info. I never knew that. Unfortunately I don’t wear all nylon or polyester clothes. I mostly wear 100% cotton, rayon or silk and spandex. I do my own wash and living in the tropics where the sun shines practically 10 months out of the year, i take full advantage if it when doing laundry. I also wear most of my clothes until they’re practically fall apart literally. Even when i can no longer wear them, i usually use it for rags. I recycled my bras into masks to wear outdoors in the dusty and polluted city.

I didn't know textile recycling was a thing until recently. My recycling facility doesn't accept glass, so I was taking several months worth of glass to another center. When I got there, they had collection boxes for textiles, and also mattresses and tube tvs/monitors which many places won't take anymore. I have so many old destroyed socks and tights and leggings that I felt too guilty to throw in the trash. Now I know where to take them!

the same recycling model is used in India too. India get loads of clothes from all over the world which are then sorted by color, shredded and converted in threads etc. But the fact still remains is that this uses energy. Not everything that is donated is used by people in need. A lot is sold to Africa, some is recycled as mentioned and alot ends up in landfills where it is burnt. So thrift and repair and buy only as much as in needed.

Great video! Favourite company is Arc'teryx - I've had coats of theirs for 10 years become delaminated and they've sent me a brand new one, and when I broke a zipper on it they replaced in AGAIN for free. So worth the money to buy quality only once. As well as many items containing recycled content (could be pre-consumer?) they have a used gear site for product resale!

I know H&M is a fast fashion company and they rip off artists' work but they do offer textile recycling in their stores. If you bring in a bag of old clothes (they can be stained, torn, or just old clothing of any type) they will take it and give you 20% off your purchase. They also offer a line called Conscious, which is clothing made from organic cotton.

Personally I don't recommend supporting fast fashion and H&M makes money off selling those clothes. As well, they currently don't have the capabilities to recycle the volume they collect, and what does get recycled is mainly downcycled, not made into new clothes like they promote. It also incentives people to buy even more fast fashion with the discount they give. If that's your only recycling option then I think it's better than throwing them away, but I'd recommend looking into other textile recycling programs first and especially donating wearable clothes to charity shops instead of giving them to H&M.

I do not know where you are from, but in Germany, the shops of H&M have recycling bins. Even if this is not a very conscious brand, I love this feature. You can pack a bag of old clothes (socks, underwear and towels included) and throw them in the recycling bin in the store. They either resell, recycle or downcycle your clothes, depending on the garment. I think this is a fast and good option for not throwing clothes in the trash. At least they have the chance to be recycled :)
@Clariceability
@Clariceability 6 лет назад
For people in the UK, lingerie brand Bravissimo take back old bras (from any brand, not just theirs) and if they're too worn to donate, they recycle them. I haven't enquired yet how successful or resource-heavy their recycling programme is because most bras will be made of blends of fibres.

Some cities have textile recycling bins, or some charity/thrift shops will also give unwearable clothes to recyclers (check with them first to make sure it's ok though). If you live in the US you can find recycling programs near you here www.weardonaterecycle.org/locator/index.php or search your city and "textile recycling" to see if anything shows up. You can also try contacting your local recycling center and ask about clothing, they should know if there are any local programs/facilities.

Hi there! Do you have any thoughts on Trashie's Take Back Bag? It looks promising, but it's strange that they don't tell consumers details about their sorting facilities "in North America." I've been hoarding some unwearable and unraggable clothing for a while (windbreakers, very shrunk wools, etc). I was considering them for recycling even if I don't get any of their redemptions.

15% seems inaccurate. There are a ton of thrift stores all over the USA 🇺🇸, Canada🇨🇦 Value Villages, BMFs, Goodwills, Talize, Consignment stores , Platos Closet, independent merchants, flea market, garage sale vendors, etc....people are learning of their advantages to donate
@MyGreenCloset
@MyGreenCloset 2 года назад
Yes there are a lot of thrift stores but there is WAY more product than they can sell and they also get a lot of garbage and poor quality clothing. The more I talk to people who work in the secondhand industry I actually think 15% is likely a generous number. There is an insane amount of used clothing and not the same market to buy it - we export way more secondhand clothing than gets sold locally.

Can recycled jeans be recycled.. again?
@froggydoodle808
@froggydoodle808 4 года назад
I think so, but depending on the length of the fibers, more (longer) virgin cotton fiber will need to be mixed in with the recycled fibers to make fabric that is strong enough, and I'm sure there will be a lot of "flyaway" fibers that are too short to be spun back into thread... perhaps those could be composted or used for biochar. I'm just guessing! I wonder why they shred the denim each time, and whether there could be some other process, like unraveling the fabric into its component threads and combing and re-spinning them, that could preserve the length of the fibers?
