Tom Robinson tells how BBC 2's pioneering music show first began in 1971, and how maverick genius Philip Jenkinson created music videos for the programme from borrowed cinema footage he happened to have handy in his personal collection. From the BBC Four special "For One Night Only" presented by Bob Harris on Friday 23 February 2018

My parents always went to bed JUST IN TIME for me to stay up and watch the OGWT! 'What are you watching they asked'? The OGWT'! I replied. 'Oh OK Goodnight'!

Sad news about producer Mike Appleton. Many of us will have will have first discovered artists such as Captain Beefheart or Little Feat through exposure on ...Whistle Test. The show featured many fine broadcasters but, i understand Mr. Appleton was intstrumental in booking wonderful acts like The Wailers & Curtis Mayfield et al. Respect...

I SO miss Tom Robinson from Radio 6 of a Saturday evening. The sound of his comforting voice was like having an old friend in the room with you.

The first Philip Jenkinson filmfinders clip was broadcast on the very first OGWT on September 21st 1971, it was Alice Cooper ’Hallowed Be My Name' and yet to be found possibly wiped over by the Beeb to save storage space, though some of that first show still exists.

OGWT was far from the first BBC programme that catered to the albums market, they'd already done Colour Me Pop and Disco 2. Maybe the Beeb want to forget about the other two programmes as they wiped nearly all of them.

It was more cost cutting than cock up. Tapes were expensive and so the BBC would tape over programmes. It was probably seen as a sensible decision at the time, but in retrospect so much classic material was destroyed.

Yeah shameful, even by 2018 and after bringing the reclusive Steve Turner back into the public eye to recognise Colour Me Pop, Disco 2 and the kick start he gave to changing music TV leading into the Whistle Test. The Beeb still decades on appear to hold a grudge over Turner from when he was mooted out of the BBC and indeed want to downplay the wiping legacy.

Led Zep also did Trampled Underfoot to a 1920s Mickey mouse film on TOGWT but it's not anywhere to be seen.

There's a nice symmetry between using pop songs for the OGWT's name and using Led Zeppelin for the intro music to Top of the Pops.

Tom, you lovely man. I liked Bob till he made an unfortunate remark about Roxy Music after their first TV performance. Bob, you were wrong there. I forgot about Marvin Gaye and Focus, but that Trampled Underfoot and the Pink Floyd echos cartoon were iconic.

As I recall, Zep were reticent about live TV or Radio appearences because of the 'bad' sound quality. Beeb had odd standards about recording and no idea at all about mixing rock music. A fault that they practised for fecades, and still oftem manage to screw up even now.

The one clip I've been trying to find is an animation used for 'Tonto's Travels'. This was by Tonto - Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff. I've emailed the BBC, but can only assume this is one of many things they've wiped over te years. Shame; some of the animations were as good as the movie clips.
