Modern fishing lines are complex formulations that, in addition to the nylon, fluorocarbon, or whatever base polymer is being used, contains additives and various non polymeric molecules that will leach out or degrade over time. This is exacerbated with uv light, high humidity, oxygen, and hot/cold cycles. My personal rule is 3 to 5 years. That spool of old mono is awesome and should be on display in your fishing room.

It depends on UV exposure, temperature fluctuations, and how often it gets used or just sits tightly on a reel .

I have kept mine in the garage fridge for years. I had two very large spools of vanish . They were dated 2002. The strength was fine but the memory was set. I threw them away last year. My current line is up to 4 years. I appreciate your show today. Thank You

Thanks Matt for the video. I wish you could see the frayed lines I just experienced on new line’s just purchased a few days ago. I checked my rods for signs of damage that could have caused this but found nothing. Manufacturing or storage by manufacturer is definitely to blame. There’s a spider on the box that’s branded the best, used it for decades. Doubt I’ll ever be convinced to use it again

Great topic!!! I have friends that wont use line more than a year old but I have spools that are pushing 30 years old that I still use. Every January I pull out all my line and spray all the spools with Blakemore Reel and Line Magic. Some people say its snake oil but I 100% believe in it. Probably 20 years ago I bought some bulk spools of 14lb and 20lb Berkley XL that I caught on clearance. Like I said earlier I spray all of these spools every January with a line conditioner but several years back one of the 20 pound spools got misplaced and when I found it probably 3-4 years later behind the work bench I went ahead and sprayed it but put an * on the spool with a note stating that the spool might be bad. Sure enough when I went to put some of the line on some reels the line would leave a white chalky residue on my fingers. I wrapped a section of line around both hands and then gave it a quick snap and it broke every single time. Thats why I believe in the line conditioner because all the other spools are just fine. In fact I am just now finishing up a spool of 8lb Berkley Tri-Maxx that has to be around 30 years old. Used it yesterday and caught several nice fish on it. Like you said, Its all about proper storage and care. In all honesty if I fished for a living I wouldnt use line that old because I would need every advantage I could get. But I cant say that old line has ever cost me a fish. Yes I do break a few fish off, but I also break off fish with line I just bought the day before so I cant say there is really any pattern there.

I keep my line in a few of the bags you get when subscribing to BASS magazine, in a cabinet, in the house. No light at all. And I always check the date when I buy in person. I write the date made and bought on the spool with a sharpie and use oldest first. If you want the freshest line possible when buying online, call the manufacturer and speak with sales. My buddy buys fresh spools every winter direct from the manufacturer and has never had a problem with getting the newest batch of line. Great subject to bring up Matt.

I just recently bought a 6 pack in its original carton of berkley tri max off ebay. This line hasn't been made since the early 90's. It was great line and i loved it. Its 4# test and i use it strictly for trout season and have had no issues at all with this 30 year old line. Knots are strong, breaking strength is no different than a new spool of trilene. As stated i keep it in the carton in my closet in controlled temps and no sunlight.

I have an old fridge in my shop and that's where I've always stored my extra line. When I'm on the water I have a bag that I keep in the boat with the line I'm currently using and when I'm done for the day I bring that bag in my camp. I've got several spools of line that I picked up on sale that's probably 2 years old that's still solid because of how I store it (I assume) but I have noticed on a couple of big bulk spools of mono that it can go bad in a couple years if you just leave it in the boat year around down here in SW Louisiana. So I definitely believe line has a shelf life but if you take care of it you can extend that life. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

It's not a good deal if you're not able to use up if it's on sale, but after hearing what the cold temperatures do to flurocarbon I started keeping my line inside the house, I probably would not use line that's over 2 yrs old, but whose to say the line you buy maybe 4 yrs old, you will know it after a few breaks, that's happened!great video!👍

I've had spools of fluoro go bad on me- like they dry rotted or something- but usually I don't have any issues with mono or braid. Mono gets too much memory in it long before it degrades, so I change it pretty often. And braid just doesn't wear out- I've used the same braid for over 3 years now on one reel- and it's still going strong.

great topic. i do believe that if i store my mono/fouro line in a cool, dark place, I should be able to keep it for a year or maybe two. not many vids on this topic/idea. i am curios as to comments about ppl who have used these types of line after longer storage times, like 3-5yrs.

I posted about what I do to keep my line in "shape", but I didn't say how long I use it until I move on from it. Good question though. I usually go about 3 years and that's just because it gets used up by then. I honestly don't have line break/fail at all. I think if you keep an eye on protection against temperature and light it should last longer. Also, I don't blindly throw the 3 yr old line on without giving it the old break test compared to newer line, it's not very scientific but it works out. As far as memory goes, before I spool it I will tie one end to a post in the yard, walk out the line to the max distance I will be casting plus a bit more, and stretch it out. I use Sunline Fluoro and Stren/Berkley Mono and no issue with memory after the stretch. Sorry, I got a bit long winded here... Enjoy your coming year on the water!

I found some flourcarbon in a tackle box I put in a dark cabinet in my basement that was like 10 years old and it worked fine. I also found some mono the same age but it was kinda was off color and left a dusty film on my finger so I tossed it. Its breaking strength didnt seem affected though but it was 12lb test. I think it just depends how its stored.

Thanx Matt. I'm always paranoid if line goes past 2 seasons. Your in a position to actually talk to manufacturers and get a definite time on when line breaks down. I was using a top selling floro. I had 2 spools and opened 1 for use. 16lb test was breaking on the cast of 2 reels. A ex friend (joke) wanted the un opened spool as I was going to toss it. It cost him a high finish in a tourny. Broke off 2 fish at the boat. Was it old or bad manufacturing?

If that line was stored somewhere that was possibly accessible by vermin (mice, rats, roaches, etc), it may have been exposed to something along the lines (no pun intended) of rodent urine or something of that nature. The way you described the "six inches smooth and an inch rough" leads me to consider this possibility. As long as line is in excellent shape at the time of storage and the method of storage eliminates any UV exposure, rodent exposure, any temperature variations below freezing or above 90° or so, or any other detrimental anomalies, it theoretically should last indefinitely. However, achieving such mild and safe conditions for decades or more is quite difficult therefore the line will, more than likely, deteriorate somewhat. Miles Burghoff posted a video fairly recently where he described the deterioration of some line he had stored where the temperature extremes played a role and he lost fish because of the deterioration of the line he was using. Ideally, an opaque, airtight container filled with a noble gas in a temperature controlled environment would be the way to store line indefinitely, but most of us won't be able to achieve such conditions. 👍🇺🇸

I have my line in a plastic tub and is stored in my fishing room, and I noticed that some of my old mono has started to degrade and decolor. I havent used mono in years but y toss good line right? Another thing you should talk about not to store improperly over a period of time are baits and lures. I left my takle bag in the boat for a few days this past summer and found two jerkbait that look like they were over an open flame. I'm never doing that again, two great Rapalas are toast. 😢

Sounds like it had might have had some fluid (oil or gasoline maybe) drip on it at some point. That would account for it being more frequent the more line you pull out as the diameter is shrinking the more you unwind.

When my father was alive he did the same to me. Quite insistent! Retired now, I'm on the water really often. I've three streams, a river real close and five lakes within an hour of the house. Yeah I fish alot. I have bulk spools also and depending on the setup I may respool at the end of the season or at two years. A couple of lakes are real rocky and after inspection they may get spooled more often. I love me some small mouth!!! #1 rule is no nicks on my rods. Nichs equal lost fish ! And it's always Trilene on my gear!!!

I actually spoke with a representative from Trilene back in the late 1990"s at huge outdoors and fishing expo in WI He told me nothing degrades poly based non braided fishing line worse than UV he told me as long as I store my reels at room temp and out of sunlight I can easily get two years out of a spooled reel and shelf life of poly based fishing line if stored at room temp and out of sunlight is at least 5 years. I fish A LOT and go through a lot of fishing line so I've never gone two full seasons without having to re spool a reel so for me I buy my do all non 100% fluorocarbon line Yo-Zuri hibrid co-polymer line in 600 yard bulk spools. I have 12 spinning rod set ups 5 have 8lb Yo-Zuri 5 have 10lb an two have 10lb braid for braid to fluorocarbon. On my 9 baitcasting setups 3 have power pro braid 4 have Yo-Zuri co-polymer and 2 had Trilene BG But for 2024 going to re-spool the two that had T-BG with 14lb Fluorocarbon as I'm going to try jigs for the first ever this year and feel fluorocarbon is best suited for baitcaster and jigs.
