How Old is Your Hearing? - Interactive Test for Your Ears

Hey audiophiles, how good is your hearing? As we age, our ability to hear high frequencies decreases. Let me know in the comments if your age and score match!
Here is how to calculate the average maximum frequency you should be able to hear based on your age. Take your age, multiply it by 166, then subtract that from 20925.
I've uploaded the video using Linear PCM audio, but RU-vid's compression algorithm changes the highest frequencies above 18khz. If you want a more accurate test, take a look at this site: onlinetonegenerator.com/hearin...

I wear hearing aids. I’m 41 years old with severe “reversed sloped hearing loss,” which is rare and means I’ve either lost the ability to hear lower pitches, or have never been able to. I was told my high pitch hearing is actually fine. I wasn’t diagnosed until two years ago. Putting those hearing aids on for the first time was LIFE CHANGING! …..but according to THIS test, my left ear (which has visible scarring from childhood ear infections) is 33 years old, and my right ear is 30. I’m 41, so I’ll take that, and it verifies what my audiologist has found on my hearing tests. Now I’m wondering if, as I age and have age-related high pitch-hearing loss, if they’ll be able to treat both conditions. ???

Your hearing generally changes in your teen years. In fact they even make things like "mosquito alarms" that are so high pitched that only kids can hear them. They put them outside shops where kids are congregating and being anti social, to move them on. It's pretty messed up really. A similar principle is used in ultrasonic cat and dog repellers.

I am 64. I have been protective of my hearing. I come in at 30 years old, precisely the same in each ear. I did rely on Bluetooth because my smartphone has no jack and I don't currently own wireless headphones. Pretty cool. I wish I could perceive like a toddler, but hey, below half my age has worked just fine. Peace. I suggest listening to jazz fusion such as Weather Report and rock blended with jazz such as Steely Dan. For lyrics, seek XTC and Joni Mitchell. For currently catchy indie, try the Beths. Thanks for listening.

I'm 67 years old and I've been a professional recording engineer all my adult life (also a drummer). I can recall being bothered by video monitors in the studio back in the old days, because the 15750 Hz sweep frequency would be so loud in the room. I've never had a professional audiometry. The highest frequency I seem to be able to hear now with good headphones is around 11,500 Hz. I'm not thrilled to have lost so much, as I'm still mixing records, but c'est la vie, I guess. (At least I don't seem to be overbrightening my mixes yet!) @@anthonyk1020 It is as far as I know perfectly fine to sleep with earplugs! My partner has been doing it for years and haven't suffered any negative effects from it! What gave me tinnitus was the fact that I wore earplugs but also decided to put my fingers into my ears (I was a dumb kid lol) to really make sure that my hearing wasn't damaged. What ended up happening instead was that me pressing on the foam earplugs caused them to crumple up in my ear and since they were not fully expanded in there, they couln't properly protect from any outside noise and I ended up getting tinnitus. Please be aware that as you get older sound needs to get louder and louder for you to be able to hear it. If I play the sound at a normal volume, I can hear something at 36 (I'm almost 35). If crank up the volume I start to hear something in the mid 20s. People who hear a sound way earlier than their actually age, are not automatically better at hearing than other people their age. Most likely they have set the volume to high. People who start the hear something way later than their age might have a hearing problem, but they also might have set the volume to low. At the beginning the guy already correctly pointed out that this is not a medical test. For this to be a valide test, you need to play the sound at the correct volume. Only with the correct volume can you get a reliable result.

I've tried different audio compression from AAC, to PCM, to OPUS (RU-vid's native compression algorithm.) PCM seemed to do the best. The others had lots of artifacts. I think the reason is that these are sine waves and maybe their algorithm looks at the high frequency sweeps as something that is "useless" data whereas if it's something on a music track, the algorithm might keep it in there.
@speakerpat
@speakerpat 5 лет назад
@@joentellOk, RU-vid is just weird. Other frequency sweeps are hearable up to 17khz or above. But some RU-vid videos won't even be processed above 480p whilst being uploaded at 4k so I guess Google just isn't able to have a stable platform anymore. I think this is pretty interesting considering some music producers use RU-vid as a main platform to share their music. Oh and as my body was adjusting to the new hearing and "normalizing" - everyone sounded like a cartoon character for several months when i was first struck with the disease.

I _feel_ more than hear a faint few tones before reaching the actual pronounced hearing too. (not counting the clicks of the audio mode switching). I tried the test while in a noisy machine shop with lathes howling in the background (banshees, as I call them), so it's hard to get the subtle things here. I I heard faint almost noise at ~19.2k and ~17.4k, but then noticeable unmistakable volume hearing at 14.9K left and 15.8K right. *The faint noises are such that faint tinnitus is mistakable, but I repeated the section several times and had my hand on the pause button, so it's repeatable that I did faintly pick up something.* With a good sound system in a reasonable room, I bet I'd feel more sure I heard something faintly vs tinnitus. The irony, is I worked on commercial fishing vessels for half a life without using hearing protection, so you'd expect I'd have lost a noticeable amount of hearing. I still hear ultrasonic electronics, but *I actually do have hearing loss. It's down in the low ranges **_because of the diesel engines._* It lines up with some men's deep voice tones, making a few tones indistinct. By the time I realized I was losing hearing, it was a regret for all the years of ignoring hearing protection.

For test 1: I heard two tones- one at 11-12, and one at 28-29. The one from 11-12 came in at a second point in that test, and seemed to oscillate down, then up at a much quieter volume than the main tone. For test 2: Left ear heard the second tone at about 17, and reached its lowest at 29. The main tone faded in at 28-29. For my right ear: Second tone came in at around 12, main tone started fading in at about 25, reached full volume at 29. Aside from the second tone they mostly matched my age. It was either at there or a bit younger. Happy to know my tinnitus isn't too bad. The second tone is curious. I think my headphones can't quite handle frequencies that high, and are just trying to fake it.

exact same thing happened for me but on another site i clearly can hear the whole way up to 18000hz so compression is a big deal here. Can hear at 21-22 as a faint tone that leaves and becomes clear around 28-29 but like I said I think compression dampens the frequencies bc i can clearly hear up to 18000hz on human benchmark hearing test.

Very informative and entertaining Joe! I did this several times as well, using a set of B&W P3 headphones. Overall, I was able to hear at 25. Left ear at 32 and right at 17. During the left and right individuals, I did not hear flatly...there was a bump around 14k each time. I tested by closing my eyes and tapping pause as soon as I could hear. I guess I did pretty well, although my left and right aren't equal I still came out younger as I'm 46. Repeated several times with Bose AE2 headphones, results were very similar. Overall age was 25. Left ear 35, right ear 24 and still did hear the bump around 14k. Thank you Joe, very nice video!

Thank you! Glad you found it entertaining. I wonder if a slight im balance would affect the way you setup speakers to get a good center image?

@@joentell that's very insightful Joe...and it's exactly correct. I have noticed that, for reasons I wasn't sure about until now, always had one speaker turned up just a tad over the other so that the center image would be perfect. I adjust using pink noise, and the difference is typically just 1db or 2db worth of adjustment. Thankfully the difference is not indicative of a problem that "messes up" my ability to discern and appreciate music and audiophile-quality sound. Since I have used the same pre-pro for several years now, I thought there was a slight difference in the output...nope lol. Edit...I'm not 100% sure the ultra high frequencies is what makes me have to adjust though, Joe, because I heard the bump at 14kHz about equally in both ears, so I'm not sure that slight increased sensitivity all the way at 17kHz would cause me to increase 1 or 2 db as a whole to get equal volume. I thought you had the answer, but at that high of frequency, it could just be my room, furnishings, etc because those are not equal on both sides.

Original old, like 1982 Bose 201 Bookshelf speakers being used as Desktop speakers at work, result was 26 (16.9kHz) for both, L, R. Surprised they play that high.

For me, the gurgling sound started at 11, the feedback sound was at 17. As for my age, college was over a decade ago.
