You missed the part of the story where parents (and some politicians) just ignored the ratings and then continue to go after mature games while neglecting to do anything with the systems already in place

I remember living through this and thought at the time it was all about government censorship. The parental advisory on music was similar. However now, as a parent, I'm glad I have at least someway to judge ahead of time if a piece of media is suitable for my kids. I know it's easy to say "Just watch/play it first" but I honestly don't have the time. I'm glad this has not turned into censorship and has just been a easy label for the type of content the media contains. I am still annoyed that Law & Order SVU is on at 7AM.

If the ESRB had existed three years earlier, my parents would have looked at a letter of the English language alphabet, printed on the box and they would have likely said no to games like Street Fighter and Vegas Stakes, games with either violence or gambling. I have been exposed to that stuff as a kid, having played Nintendo at a day and age when it was considered to be a children's toy. Two of the first games that I have ever played were Super Mario World and Super Play Action Football. I used to play Sonic The Hedgehog on a Sega at a video store and when I saw the K-A, printed on Donkey Kong Country, I did not know what that meant. I thought all the games were kids to adults and I was wrong. This was the beginning of a new era when video games were going to be monitored and my parents were going to read these letters: EC for early childhood, K-A for kids to adults, T for teen, M for mature, and AO for adults only before letting me pick out a game. I was still a kid, therefore I would only be able to play an EC or a K-A. I was going for the K-A games, since EC was too baby-ish for me at the time. Later, the K-A would be replaced with the letter E for everyone. This was me as a 1990's kid, a teen in the 90's and 00's, and not yet mature until the 2000's when it come to ESRB ratings.

I honestly do care because you have vibes of a really cool dude and while I'm still gonna watch every upload you've ever made, it would suck if you were gone 9 months ago and never come back. Im appalled to this day that men in suits who spent years in law school, in an american court of law were arguing that the man in the silly foam costume pulling the 16 bit soccer ball off of his idendical color swapped opponents shoulders and ejecting the same blood sprite 100 times like an overworked printer As being the most realistic dipiction of real world violence ever put to screen. Indiana jones and robo cop were 5-10 years old by that point, but children can discern the difference between movie violence and pixlated video game violence

Dammit! How DARE the government not raise my child for me!! What kind of country is this where I have to monitor my child and limit their access to things which they would only have access to because of the things I provide them?!!?? I need the government to teach my kid that his father is historically the bad guy, that he isn’t sure what kind of sex to enjoy and who to vote for. That’s what I pay 64% of my income for!
