The story of Jim Brown begins is nothing short of legendary. Standing 6-foot-2 and packing 230 hard pounds on his square-shouldered frame, he was an explosive fullback, combining outstanding speed with awesome power. He played only nine seasons for the Cleveland Browns - and led the NFL in rushing yards eight times.
His statistics are the stuff of legend: averaging an impressive 104 yards per game and setting a record with 5.22 yards per carry. In an astounding 58 out of his 118 regular-season games, he achieved the 100-yard mark, a testament to his consistent excellence. On two remarkable occasions, he rushed for a staggering 237 yards in a single game, while in another memorable performance, he scored an incredible five touchdowns. With seven seasons surpassing the 1,000-yard rushing mark, including a remarkable 1,527-yard season in just 12 games and an astonishing 1,863 yards in a 14-game season, Jim Brown's dominance on the field was truly unmatched. But why and how did one of the greatest running backs of all time give up football to become an actor?

He retired when he did because the filming of the the Dirty Dozen in Europe was running late and Brown could not make it to the beginning of training camp. Art Modell threatened to fine Brown if did not report. That was enough for Brown so he retired earlier than he originally intended. No one tells the great Jim Brown what he must do.

Jim Brown comes across to me kind of like Muhammad Ali. He was the best on the football field as a NFL running back and also showed his greatness as an iconic social activist for injustice off the field for black people in America..

He and Ali were very close friends.

Brown and several well-known African-American athletes stood behind Ali when he decided to avoid the draft.

When, as a pro, he was asked to also block for others, he said that he" I don't block." Recently, when asked if he had any regrets, he said, " I should have blocked." He was great but a real prima donna.

It was said of Jim Brown that he looked bigger without his football pads on. In Baltimore he was known as the greatest lacrosse player who ever lived, from his college days at Syracuse University if I remember correctly.

Saying he gave up on FB is disingenuous at best

Seems obvious why someone would do so. The game didn't pay nearly as much back then. So why would he want to beat the hell out of himself for scraps?

Can't blame him for leaving, because 9yrs of football as a RB that is called upon time after time to carry the ball and make a big play. Take in account the numbers he put up he had nothing to prove to know one.

Jim did not quit. He stayed at it to the finish.Failure to overcome the Packers in 65 and 66 may have been a convincing factor to retire. It would me.
