Fuji already stated that they are discontinuing their US (kodak) made subsidized film as they are restarting/increasing production of their domestic stocks as supply chains are easing up, at the cost of needing to increase the price, including slide film.
@grainystories
@grainystories 11 месяцев назад
Well before recording this video I asked some suppliers about it and no one confirmed any official information from Fuji, so there’s nothing but this note on Fuji’s website. But as I said films listed on their Japanese website may prove that Fuji is not out of the business at all. And i really hope that they are slowly starting producing the film again not only selling some old stocks on Japan market.

Do you have a source for this? Last word on the street was that Fuji basically shut down most of their film production circa 2016 and was selling frozen stock for the longest time. (Excluding the ever-popular Instax ofc)

@@koekje00005 Fuji themselves announced it back in like June or so, it was along with their announcement of needing to increase the prices of their filmstocks as they restart production thanks to securing logistics for materials to make film. Overexposed did a video on it.

Black and white aside, what about Harman, Adox and Silberra? Adox states it is developing a new color emulsion to create a sustained supply of color film for years to come, that would introduce some much needed variation in the film industry. Silberra looks nothing alike Fuji or Kodak, almost transparent negative. And of course there are rumours that Harman (oct 25th, coming soon) will be creating color film.
@grainystories
@grainystories 11 месяцев назад
Silberra is probably some aerial film like Kodak Aerocolor or something discontinued, bought some time ago and cold-stored (most likely Agfa). That’s why it’s clear base film. Adox only film available is Mission which was coated few years ago by some mystery company.

@@grainystories just wondering if you ever measured it. There is no such thing as 120mm film. It's called 120. Rollfilm formats were given a number, starting with 101. Only a few formats survived today, like 110, 120 and 135. Why people think it should be called 120mm, no idea since the film is just 61,5mm wide.

Saved film? Its dead, and it has been for quite some time, its not profitable anymore to mass produce this stuff. Even photography in general is dying because of social media and how easy it is to use your smartphone for everything these days.
@grainystories
@grainystories 7 месяцев назад
Harman recently has made new color film, Kodak is working 24/7 to fill the market. Even it’s smartphone era you can see a lot of people with cameras. Film is not dead and photography is not dead. It’s natural that today film can’t be as popular as in the 90s when it was the only format available 🤯
@SMGJohn
@SMGJohn 7 месяцев назад
@@grainystories Dead means its turned into niche market purely driven by people who have passion to maintain it. Not because its all that profitable. Kodak still maintains a small tiny factory with around 300 - 400 employees to manufacture film because, yes, Hollywood, there some really big names and studios that pay millions to have fresh film being made by Kodak, you cannot convince me that Kodak is doing this purely for stills photography when Kodak themselves revealed less than 10k brand new rolls were sold in 2021, thats abysmal considering the manufacture cost. But hey, even if its dead as a profitable business, I am glad its being kept alive for those who care enough to go through the pain of shooting film, but I am also a realist and when Hollywood stops caring about film, thats probably also when Kodak will close shop. And thats gonna suck, because film is like CRT televisions, it does not last forever and has a lifespan and then we are back to emulating it with modern technology for 50 times the cost of just 1 roll
@grainystories

Sorry my friend, but film is dead. Even the Gen Z hipsters currently fuelling it's niche renaissance will get bored by it soon. I speak as a pro who learnt on and shot the first two decades of my career on film. As a commercial ad shooter, the best thing that ever happened to photography was digital. It was also the best thing for the environment. Film photography on the scale it existed was an environmental catastrophe. All those billions of rolls of film that were shot for all those millions of disposable magazine & ad shoots and were eventually thrown away into land fill?, and all the ghastly [commercial] Polaroid waste - and I can assure you that most of it was not disposed of remotely responsibly. Not to mention the billions of litres of chemicals used for processing. Photography is alive and kicking, but film is purely a hobby pursuit now.
@grainystories
@grainystories 7 месяцев назад
Well, these days film photography is not meant to be used for ads or commercial shooting in general. Maybe with few exceptions. Like you won’t buy classic, don’t know, Mustang or any other youngtimer to put it on Taxi. But somehow today, when digital gear is more perfect than we could have dreamed, film is getting more and more popular. Harman has released brand new color film, Polaroid is back, Kodak has resumed production of Ektar and Gold in 120. So no, it’s not dead :) But you’re probably right about not being environment friendly 😢
