catch cans are AOS too, and collect oil in themselves and need to be drained/emptied; much like this. So, isn't this unit more like a can? Other AOS I've seen have a return line back to the oil pan so they never need emptied. Also, what is in the passages of the unit at 1:18 that is black? is that a wire gauze/screen of some type? The walls inside the passages look clean.

Catch cans and AOS are similar, but they are different. We offer drain back kits for some of our AOSes, but those are optional add-ons. This AOS is still fairly clean as we have not put many miles on the car since it has been installed. The stuff inside the AOS at the bottom is a type of mesh for filtering.

Inside the AOS. There is a petcock for draining it.

What is the maintenance on those filters? How long until we have to clean or change out

No maintenance needed. We have ran the same filters on our shop BRZ for over 8 years now without issue. However, if you want to replace them at some point, we can sell replacements.
