Fun fact, we had a third railway in Chiriquí, it connected our highlands to the provincial capital to the port towns themselves, they were scrapped unfortunately in the rise of the automotive
@PAnon-sama
@PAnon-sama 2 года назад
There was another one on Bocas del Toro from Almirante to Changuinola and several branches for the bananeras and a line in Darién from Boca de Cupe to Cana mines. President Porras wanted to connect the Chiriquí Rail with the Capital but the country wasn't able to find the financing for the project. I guess we didn't have the Investment Grade back then. 🥲

Indeed, Colón started to decline after the Canal Zone was abolished, they heavily depended on the services the city provided to US bases. Fun fact, most of the country’s infraestructure is located on the pacific side, while the Caribbean side is much less populated and developed (partly due to geographic reasons, since the cordillera and the rainforest makes roads very costly to build for scarcely populated villages, also there are many protected areas on that side, and indigenous jurisdictions were the central government doesn’t interfere much for complicated reasons). Cheers

3:43 an important thing to add is that the Panama Canal treaty in the 1970s was a result of diplomatic genius by Panama and its allies. As a Panamanian, please let me elaborate. Panama saw the signs of the time: The US, "the leader of the free world," championed liberty and was calling on the Soviet Union to not oppress countries around the world and allow for self-determination, so Panama used this argument effectively on its behalf against the US. The Panama Canal and its sovereignty was not only about revenue, but an argument for liberty, sovereignty, and self-determination that its previous owner itself, the US, could not ignore and needed to uphold.

We didn't get money during our secession from Colombia. Also 7:19 the Panamanian government itself blocks the plans for extending the Pan-American highway (caveat: there's a lot of people who favour finishing the highway). I believe that, including yesterday, there has been one murder per day since Sept 12 or something like that. Ave Central has changed a lot, for better and worse and is no longer the place to buy and such. The countryside is the same beautiful as ever, although Cocle, Veraguas and Chiriqui are having a lot of infrastructure builded around and more people are moving to different provinces instead of just going to the city.

@@starman6468 but im talking about the fact that they would need to take the panamenian management out. look where this has taken us to,, a foreign government basically is the one in charge of our defenses :), thank u liberal founders of our country :), this country is the perferct example of how useless the liberalism really is....

@@starman6468 and by the way, protect us? They only protect their interests including the CIA agreements with the narcos to get some extra cash, and yeah is true Nixon used the narcos to get enough money to support the war in Nicaragua, they full filled the American black hoods with crack in order to sponsor a war in a foreign county that had absolutely nothing to do with them :), but what can we say about a country which has a health care system that turn their citizens into addicts to painkillers...

You look surprisingly convincing in that Egyptian attire. It doesn't look out of place even though you are a White European.

Colombia was in the middle of a civil war and there were already American soldiers “protecting” the Panama Canal and because of how difficult, it was to transport troops through the jungle, the Americans knew it would be easier to just have it as a puppet state because it’s not only a tax haven but also uses dollars now. They just took advantage of Colombia

Panama is blessed to be located where they are at. If I was the leader of Panama I would have developed Panama to be the Singapore of the Western Hemisphere.

@@starman6468 Yeah, it hasn't been too long since high education was made available to the masses, and with such a small population (relatively speaking) it is difficult to find competent leaders to choose from. It is a problem in most developing countries. Everyone is just doing their best. We can always do better, but that can be said of all humans. I sincerely think that is humanity's biggest virtue: we always strive higher.

So Panama is also just a city state with control over its hinterlands and smaller communities. I know Thailand is similar but how many nations are really just city states.
