Hey everyone, as usual you can find the sources linked here and in the description box. This video is almost certainly going to get demonetised but I hope you enjoy it anyway. However, because of this I'm considering setting up a members system where those of you who really want to support me can through RU-vid, I would be interested to hear from everyone whether they'd prefer this or the conventional Patreon option. Edit: If my voice sounds different in this video it's because I had to record the audio while I had a slight cold. Sorry! Sources: www.dropbox.com/s/7dyg8x6kpxi0uj1/Paris%20Video.docx?dl=0
Imagine being a German soldier stationed in Paris, getting drunk, punching an officer when he reprimanded you and two weeks later you're in Stalingrad.
@@sunnyjim1355 Oi guvna, imagine ye get roight knackered in Worcestershire an‘ ye punch an offica when he gives ye a bollockin‘ an‘ two weeks later yer in Burma
@@CrimsonAlchemist because it was a colony and the people were not too happy about that, disease, heat, poor infrastructure at the time plus the potential of a Japanese invasion. Not as bad as Stalingrad, but not great either.
oh my god... im belgian and my entire life ive heard and used the saying "living like god in france" to hear the history behind this is amazing, your videos are so stunningly beautiful.
The saying came in to existance in reference to the absolute kings of France in the early modern period (ie the "Sun King" with frases like l'état c'est moi). It doesn't come from this, it was just very applicable.
I think the allies did the same after they liberated Paris (the tourism part, not the occupation). My grandfather (American) spoke fondly of his R&R time in Paris after he suffered an injury.
yeah i read in antony beevors book "ardennes" that many parisians said that life under the Germans was better than the Americans, because the Americans often stole a lot of things, refused to pay money and generally acted entitled.
When the STO was announced in 43, my great grandfather took his bike and fled from Picardy and went into hiding in Normandy. He was working in a factory during the occupation and had been an artilleryman during the battle of France. Unfortunatly, he never spoke very much about the war and what he did during the occupation so that is all I know.
Life under occupation must have been humiliating and depressing. Especially when the Germans invade with uppity and zealous feelings of superiority. Must have been amazing when learning about D-day and waiting day by day for the front to reach you. Thank you, France for helping us during our revolution. We’re proud to help you guys from the Nazi muddy trench Germany pushed you into. Glad Germany was also freed from that nazi cesspool, after shoving most of Europe into it. All the survivors, including my great uncle are the lucky ones. That war was one of the most inhumane ever. Wouldn’t think even ancient warriors would be able to handle the kind of horrors Modern war can give.
This was really well made, turned out to be interesting as well, but what really stood out here for me was the narration and particularly the visuals, which were both elegant and made with dedication.
The Eastern Front and the Russians were famously a threat that was held over German soldiers both by their own command and Western Allies holding them as POWs - in the 60 Minutes piece on the Ritchie Boys, one of them told of how since he spoke Russian and they somehow had hold of a Soviet officer's uniform. If an interrogation wasn't going well he'd barge in and demand, in Russian, to be handed his prisoner and that usually got the interviewee (a commissioned officer/Nazi Party member or even SS) to open right up so he could stay in the Yanks' hands.
I cannot remember his name, but I read about that guy and a few days later I actually saw him at a University of Michigan football game on Veterans Day. He was actually a Jew who had been forced to flee Germany shortly before the Holocaust escalated, and accepted a job interrogating German soldiers because he understood the language and culture so well. (I think also understood Russian because his parents were Eastern Europeans who fled to Germany).
Fascinating video, especially since i'm french and grew up in the paris suburbs and never learnt about this. My Grandfather was a mold sculptor (for metal, mater plastic etc) and got drafted for STO. I don't know when in the process but he "accidentally" broke a limb at work, and had to be sent home. I don't know much more as he died at 101 years old in 2011.
There's a videogame that lets you experience this sort of contradiction, "The Saboteur". It's a bit off, but no-where else can you win against the German occupiers in racing go-kart style. Also it's stylish nature, as if taking inspiration from this video.
@@RobespierreThePoof no, for two reasons. It's too on the nose, and it relates less to tourism. You're not given books when you're on a tour of something.
What a magnificent channel. This era we are in right now can feel quite crappy, but the 2010s will be renowned for advent of brilliant intellectuals like you setting up shop on RU-vid and blessing us with award level knowledge!
That’s why I call this decade the retarded 20’s, to contrast it with last century’s roaring 20’s. Since the world decided to lose its mind over 3 years ago thanks to the ccp virus.
The quality of the content you produce is unmatched, especially when looking at the view count. I really hope your channel blows up in the near future to make up for the attention you deserve to have received ages ago. Can't wait for what's next to come :)
I love how you have designed this video, the theme of redness and the lines of red upon characters is very symbolic for me. I applaud your attention to detail and your hard work. I wish you had more support for such great content.
You are truly skilled at writing, I commend you greatly. Additionally, the visuals and graphics leave very few competition, they are just beautiful and I absolutely adore them!
I recently visited Paris a few months ago and imagining Wehrmacht jackboots marching down the same streets as I did, or drunk men stumbling through the same alleyways I did, all clad in cold, stone grey uniforms, and all the while the French inhabitants of the city starved and struggled through the occupation are thoughts that give me deep chills. Great video.
This is the same as what the US did to every country it invaded. They did that to us. They are the new nazis, it just that liberalism and democracy are the narrative they like to peddle abroad, while engaging in imperialism and colonialism for the same economical and authoritarian reasons the Axis had. This is what the amerikkkan is.
After watching the video I noticed that this is my first time watching video of yours, I tought to myself that this is probably one of the best if not the best animations I have ever seen in youtube. I took a quick guess of how much subscribers you are going to have after watching the video and in my head there was millions of susbcribers but to my surprise at the moment of me writing this comment you have only 41k subs. Great job, you have a bright future on this platform just keep making these videos and these thousands and maybe millions of subs are gonna come in future. You should be sure that you earned at least 1 more subscriber. Great work.
There was something akin to this in one of the Recent Wolfenstein Games. I forget which city it was in, but you read a letter, and it’s of a nazi soldier/veteran who vacationed to California or something and was remarking about it in a similar manner to the people you mentioned in the video. Wild that it actually had some historical basis, makes it all the more impactful for me.
I came across this video just by spamming the F5 button, and clicked on it without any expectations, and holy, your editing and narrating style is simply beautiful, keep it up :) !!!
I just discovered your channel and I thought it would have hundreds of thousands of subs but no; your content is amazing and I'm truly baffled about how you are not more popular. I love your content and hope you keep on being awesome!
I have watched all your videos and must say I am really appreciating them! As a Canadian it is tough to find documentary's that are not influenced by US bias or interest. It is really refreshing to hear another point of view. Lastly I must commend the writing / script as it is extremely well put together and to the point. It feels to me like many either don't take the time to create a script or blab on unnecessarily...almost like they are trying to hit a time mark for their videos.
I lived in Germany for a number of years and have friends in both countries. Germans have great respect and admiration for France. (The French respect Germans too...but theirs is a little more grudging.) The term "Leben wie Gott in Frankreich" became "Essen wie Gott in Frankreich" long ago. Dine like God in France. This kind of friendship can be a model for the rest of the world.
The animations, script, narration and research made me think that this video was made by a channel which has over a million subscribers. I am genuinely surprised. Great work!
Wonderful and well-informing video. I'm a bit surprise about the remark that "nowhere else could soldiers experience this so-and-so". It is my understanding, that the occupation of Denmark and the Netherlands was quite peaceful for the occupiers as well. Of course, Amsterdam and Copenhagen couldn't match the luxery of Paris, but Denmark was the so-called "Whipped cream-front" and "butter-front" as well because of the peaceful bounty of dairy products and, on the surface at least, easy-going locals.
I’d say the 1890s-1910s would be better. All the benefits of low/zero cars without the Nazis. The French people would have been happy during this time.
Damn, that's a good video. Amazing visuals, compelling storytelling, great voice over, an overall masterpiece. Great production value, truly. Thank you for this. Keep up the good work, please. hope your channel grows and grows! Oh. btw, gorgeous pronunciation of German and French.
Can you remember me when you get to 10 million subscribers? Your documentaries are well researched, written, edited and presented. You will be big one day mark my words.
A very well made video with finally someone making actual effort, and including sources. God damn i don't know why it is not the norm, but thank you. I wish there were more high quality academia-lite style educational videos.
My Grandfather joined the Army after Pearl Harbor and was in the Army Corp of Engineers he basically was tasked with building Pontoon bridges over the rivers. He spent some time in Paris and it was the greatest time of his life. He was still talking about Paris 60 years later while telling my wife about the wine they drank and great time they had while in Paris. it was an escape not just for Nazi's but every Soldier that was able to take advantage of the Parisian hospitality. Whether they were invaders or liberators all the same Paris was an escape!
5:09 I guess every other french city lacked any form of underground transportation too. At the beginning of WW2 only a few major cities in Europe had a subway, like Berlin, Paris, London, Budapest and Moscow.
A similar thing happened today. With Russia annexing the Crimean peninsula, it had become a super popular location for Russian tourists who could afford to go there.
Similar happening in russian-occupied Mariupol. ruzzian influencers taking "aesthetic" pictures in front of ruins of residential buildings and vehicles. Absolutely disgusting
Can I just say, I am such ww2 history buff girl, and I have never seen a video done like this before, Just pure amazing and so talented, you've got yourself a fan and subcriber !!!! Can't wait for the next videos
