Dear viewer, please note the following corrections to the video: 1. Rwanda's GDP per capita is $750 not $2,100. The $2,100 figure is the Kagame administration's medium term target. 2. The reference to Rwandan GDP "reaching a record 8.2%" refers to the GDP growth rate. Their GDP per capita despite their small population and “thriving economy” as you put it, is still abysmal. You need to edit your thumbnail with factual information or provide whatever sources you used. Your recent Botswana video claim they have a capita income of $18,000. But recent statistics from the world bank puts this figure at a little over $8000. Most if not all sub Saharan African countries are still poor
@NewAfrica
@NewAfrica 4 года назад
@@agbaya5314 3 things: 1. The Botswana GDP figure you have posted is the nominal GDP figure. We used the PPP adjusted GDP figure which is a much better indicator of the standard of living of regular people within the country. The link is here: data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.PP.CD?locations=BW&name_desc=false&view=chart 2. By stating that "Most if not all sub Saharan African countries are still poor" are you not pointing out the obvious? The point of these videos is not to claim perfection but to document the progress that is being made in comparison to where we are coming from. 3. As you can see the thumbnail comes from the error in the video itself which we have clearly identified in the top comment. These videos are made on a shoe-string budget and take time to produce. We hope that you can appreciate that and be a bit more gracious in your comments.

pretty much, the thing that makes governments fail isn't their inherent problems, but always power grabs during instability. of course inherent problems can cause instability but with a strong leader they can be mitigated or even changed like we've seen with the lowering of tribalism and the nations general transition to wealth. it all comes down to how things go in the future, will things become totalitarian or republican? maybe a mix of life long representatives and elected ones like the UK, in whichever case i do hope the people get to enjoy our priviledges after all those years of hardship, africas had it really fucking rough and i hope they can start supporting each other instead of being manipulated by outside powers.

@Psywriter You have to agree that Africa has and had always had more potential than it actually accomplished. I mean Rwanda has been working on the country for 20 something years and has eclipsed a lot of African countries. That shouldn't be possible if the other countries were well organised too.
@jd-uz1ln
@jd-uz1ln 4 года назад
@Psywriter if countries keep trying the same non efficient way and they don't change methods it isn't an external problem. If you keep doing what you always did you keep getting what you always got. Seriously from a Dutch perspective it is mind blowing to see how much natural resources are in africa and yet no nation has accomplished anything like the U.A.E. which transformed from a few rural villages to an economic powerhouse in a few decades. O and by the way we both can't say oil companies aren't large multinationals so even in multinational-dominated markets it's possible. It's just corruption, terrible leadership,short term perspective and rivalries between and inside nations all in different quantities per country that stops Africans from doing that.

@Stuart Penman : Yes. Still pretty authoritarian in many ways. And the peaceful transfer of power to an enlightened leader AFTER Kigame remains in doubt. Ideally, they'll come up with something close to the original U.S. Constitution, with checks and balances by LAW and not just by culture, although their culture seems to have come a long way. If only the USA were closer to the original U.S. Constitution (without the racist bits). That said, the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution have been one of the main reasons we did AWAY with the most regressive features of our culture and society at the time they were created. A lot of forward-thinking people in a pretty backward time.

He might be a better leader than the vast majority of African leaders, he's still an asshole. Yes Rwanda has made a lot of progress, invested in education and its economy grew thanks to his free market and anti corruption stance. But part of that is used to sell his propaganda to the world, if you look at Rwanda indexes on political freedom and economic disparities, it's still an African country more than anything else, not "the Singapore of Africa". But the most infuriating thing about his propaganda is how he sells what happened in 1994 in his favor. Many evidences shows that the RPF is not the reason why the genocide has stopped but also more importantly, that when he came to power, Kagame committed countless atrocities in Kivu to hunt down the genocide leaders but mostly hutu civilians and also, use the situation there at its own advantage, further destabilize the area and support Kabyla into power. Not everything stopped in 1994 and everyone knows that, and now this guy is being portrayed as a "visionary", a "hero", it's disgusting.

@@tetra4289 so you think Singapore is this utopian democracy? Much of Asian giants had their own types of government and they succeeded. Holy hell! @tetra4289

@@hydrolifetech7911 Never said that, Singapore as a lot of flaws like not being a democracy but it is not comparable to Rwanda, both economically and politically. I was saying that because there are a lot of people that call Rwanda "the Singapore of Africa", and the government promotes that slogan too. And this is a good example of the double edged policies of Kagame, (like i said in my previous comment) on one hand im glad that he is heading towards free enterprise, sovereignty, anti corruption and promoting peace, but on the other hand he is largely exaggerating that situation to promote his own propaganda, and shut down any opposing voices that would dear speak against "the economic miracle". And if you look at his past, you see he is not the man he pretends to be at all, so why don't you please make some research instead of insulting me for disagreeing with you (and the entire comment section of this video).
@hydrolifetech7911
@hydrolifetech7911 4 года назад
@@tetra4289 where was the insult in my statement? Lee started way before Kagame took over and the 'Singapore of Africa' moniker is only in relation to Rwanda's politics and economy's trajectory being similar to when Singapore was starting to take off. You clearly have a bias if you are taking issue with just that playful moniker. And oh yeah! I am well-versed on Rwanda and Kagame's history and I don't have any issue with it. For comparison, Abraham Lincoln took his country to war against a rebel group in his country and managed to free slaves and usher in an era of RELATIVE equality to all men in the US as is laid out in US Constitution. He managed to bring together the two sides after the war much like Kagame did recently(1994) and is remembered as one of the greatest US presidents. Kagame's past rebel history and bringing an end to the genocide only bolsters his creds

@@tetra4289 Singapore also does not have lots of freedom. Which is why the same party has ruled it since independence in 1965. Also, the racial riots of 1964 is used as an excuse to implement draconian laws. So maybe Rwanda is Africa's Singapore.

11:55 I understand your perspective that Kagame's work legacy does not deserve to be smeared by political shortcomings based on Western perspectives. Rwanda is indeed, and this cannot be understated, incredibly lucky to have produced such a natural leader to recover from '94. However, that in itself is the problem with overlooking democracy: Rwanda was lucky. It was not a planned benevolent act of god that Kagame was there to lead Rwanda out of those dark times, and not every crisis spawns people like him. You made this video not only because Rwanda prospers, but also because in doing so, it stands out. It is unique in its prosperity. States like Rwanda, let us call them benevolent authoritarian states, like Singapore are only as effective as their leaders. But one day Paul Kagame will die too. Lee Kuan Yew died, then he was replaced by his similarly successful son, Lee Hsien Loong. But Hsien Loong will die one day too, and then who will replace him? His children? How long before this turns into another corrupt nepotist dynasty? Or if not family, then it will be up to party politics. By that method as easily as China got undeniably the successful Xi Jin Ping, they also got the definitionally corrupt Jian Ze Min only 2 decades ago. Most obviously let's look at Marshall Tito. The very exemplar of the benevolent dictator. And when he died, only some 10 years later Yugoslavia collapsed into ethnically driven civil war, not dissimilar from Rwanda. Democracy is not incapable of putting incompetent leaders into office. Democracy put George Weah, and all the other loud drums into office, of course. But so long as the healthy political culture is maintained in the people, then as easily as a bad leader is put into office, he can be peacefully removed from it. I don't think democracy is a luxury. Admittedly it is not water, or bread or oxygen, but to me it is more akin to health insurance. Rwanda is, of course, healthy now, it prospers under Kagame, and it may seem imprudent to worry too much about the problems it does not even have yet when there are problems to be faced now. But should Kagame die, or worse yet, should his time in office change him for the worse (for he is not infallible, and history can only warn us of many a man who's heart has changed each in their own ways with power), Rwanda inevitably must find a replacement for him, and at that point I believe that a functional democratic process will be necessary to find the next person to continue Kagame's progress.

I am South African. I am in awe of the Rwandan story. Wish that many of African leaders can learn from the journey and the steps taken by the nation in the path towards achieving their success story. The reconciliation, the transformation, the growth.... The most powerful stance though taken by the people of Rwanda in their story is recognising and acknowledging that the former colonisers are the cause of the ethnic divisions that led to the genocide and that therefore Hutus and Tutsi must forgive each other. Wow, the power in that.... Africans United Can Never Be Defeated. Thank you Pres P Kagame for your leadership

@Georg, Current Rwanda president is being tagged the name 'Dictator' by the Westerners (you Europeans and Americans) just because of the development and economic rapid growth going on in Rwanda. Country's like Congo Republic, Nigeria, Cameroon and other African countries where human rights are being abused, the Westerners don't question why humans rights are being abused in these countries, because they're extracting mineral resources from these aforementioned countries. Once you decide not to let the flow of the minerals as usual and decide to build your country and grow your economy, they will call you a dictator and come after you. But you know what?, we Africans don't blame you, it's because our dumb, blind leaders has given you so much authority's to do whatsoever you wish with Africa, you can't try this in Russia, China, North /South Korea. The God of Africa will never leave you guys(Westerners) unpunished for distroying souls of especially children, just for your benefits and selfish interests.. Continue.... Everyday is for thief, but one day is for the owner. Africa will rise, no matter how hard you try to bring her down. We shall rise, its just a matter of time.

The benefits and positive changes that have been brought about in Rwanda as a result of Kagame's leadership far outweighs the envisioned and dubious benefits that would have resulted from Rwanda being a full 'democracy'. He needs to be on the helm of Rwanda's leadership until all its citizens are fully and thoroughly instilled with a sense of a nation building. What is the use of rotation in leaders - as required by democracy - when Kagame steps down and the following leader becomes a despot with no vision who will take Rwanda back to its dark days?
@stafer3
@stafer3 5 лет назад
“What is the use of rotation in leaders - as required by democracy - when Kagame steps down and the following leader becomes a despot with no vision who will take Rwanda back to its dark days?” Ehm, what exactly stops this hypothetical future leader now? I mean one day he will eventually die either way, so new guy will come. And this new guy will inherit system where he can’t be removed from office, and will have full control over state, so there will be no defense against him taking Rwanda back to dark days. Dictator that can’t figure out transition after him leaving office is failure. He can accidentally slip on stairs and break his neck. What then? Will country just continue functioning normally, and prosper without him, or will the country face crisis? Here’s an idea. Why not create system where even when bad leader is elected he won’t have enough power to f*ck the country? Why the hell do all presidents in Africa have power of kings? Then everyone is afraid of election because “what if the new guy will be bad and bring us to dark days”. Don’t give them that much power then. Easy.
@N0xiety

The only thing that can prevent that very likely future is for Kagame to build the culture up from bottom together with the younger generation of the nation with values and integrity that would keep them from becoming corrupt individuals who would only seek their own self gain. It is not wrong to seek self gain since it is human nature, but what is important is to have values that would prevent one from going too far and becoming destructive in their search for self gain. Will there be corrupt individuals even with all that? Always. No matter how good a job he can do, there will always be selfishly destructive people. But the important part is reforming the majority. To make the kids growing up today to become the future leaders of integrity. To make them into the shield against those who would want to corrupt everything. You may not be able to control the basic human nature, but atleast you can instill a sense of belonging, unity, logic, tolerance and integrity to most humans, which will keep their actions in check. There is no perfect system, but that is the best anyone could do for the future of a nation... Ironically, this is the exact opposite of what the left is doing to western nations of today. Children in school are being taught alienation over belonging. Segregation over unity. Ignorance over logic. Narrow mindedness over tolerance. Dishonesty over integrity. It is like they are doing their best to destroy the society by turning children into drones of ignorance in every aspect. Ignorant people are easy to control after all...

This video and the portrayal of Kagame as a modern day enlightened monarch gives me mixed feelings. What happens when that person is gone, Rwanda might have become more stable and taken a lot of positive steps. But private militias are operating not far from the Rwandese border in Congo. Democracy isn't a perfect system, we can see that it's under pressure all over the world. But more than other systems it relies on leaders listening to people and taking responsibility for their actions, not just one single person or party, however benevolent their actions and thoughts might be.

It's not surprising you would support a mass murderer like Kagame, since that is what your president in Brazil supports

Kagame's legacy is more widespread than just the prospering of the Rwandan people. He has set a precedent that provides hope for other African countries that might even have more resources than that of Rwanda. Only time will tell whether the other leaders will be brave enough to follow suit. Great video

Enemies can say whatever they want about sweet little Rwanda's Kagame...he is a man of results. He put Rwanda first and brought results. I wish others learn.

Amazingly this seems very well balanced. Good job and good luck to Rwanda.

There is no balance at all. Every criticism of Kagame was skipped over at the end of the video, with little analysis.

Kagame is a murderous pawn,always has been ... This report does not tell you that he was the one that lit the match of the Rwanda genocide by shooting down the president's plane killing two head of states in the process. It does not tell you that the sole reason behind this so called economic boom is the horrendous raping & bloodshed on top of the systemic pillaging of mineral resources he's perpetrating with the help of his western backers on the neighboring country which is still ongoing to this day. That report does not question why he has been orchestrating an invasive control on that said neighboring country by invading it,assassinating his previously ally turned president and installing a Rwanda national (usurper Kabila) at the head of that country who is ruling it to this day. That report does not mention his plan which is already approved by the US to annex part of the eastern DRC to Rwanda,the very part they have been pillaging to this day. www.theguardian.com/news/2017/sep/12/americas-secret-role-in-the-rwandan-genocide www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Africa/US_Recolonization_Congo.html thinkingafrica.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html?m=1 plaidavenger.com/leaders/profile/joseph-kabila/ www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-africa-46687492 And there is a ton of info out there still coming out despite the UTTER SILENCE from western medias on this issue and that for for the past 30 years. In the DRC the equivalent of the 9/11 death toll has been happening DAILY since 1997,DAILY !
