3D Movie Maker is part of the Microsoft Kids series of software from the mid-90s.
Despite being from 1995, this game is still being used to make movies today.
You won't believe what some people are capable of this with this children's game, pushing it to its absolute limits.
The community is still active, making tools and mods, and somebody has even been working on an open source remake for a few years.
And whilst I was working on this, the full source code for 3D Movie Maker was released.
Music is mostly from the 3dmm soundtrack:

when i was a kid we won a spanish version of this at a silent auction and i swear it was one of the most impactful “moments” of my life. the way it makes you think of things along these dynamic 3d spaces impacted me a lot

What an incredible and thoughtful retrospective I see so many people brush 3dmm off as some crappy program that can’t really do anything good but make dumb memes. Seeing you mention those movies which are some of the greats really put a smile on my face as well as the custom scenery which is honestly better than most of other new peoples movies I would honestly welcome seeing a movie release from you on the board think you show some real promise.

Honestly some of the stuff I've seen made with it is amazing, a lot of it kind of stupid or comedy but there's all the potential for some aspiring movie makers. The dumb meme videos are pretty funny too. Was going to make a little short for the end of the video but making this vid took way longer than I intended. One of my friends keeps talking about wanting to make a 3dmm musical so I might have a project to get involved with

nice retrospective! i feel when comparing 3dmm to utilities like Source Filmmaker, Blender, etc. i think what gave 3dmm its uniqueness (besides the fact that it was early - 3d polygonal characters in PC games were novel for the time, quake wasn't yet released by the time 3dmm came out) was the low barrier of entry. you could push the medium to certain limits, but it was built in mind to be "so easy even a kid could make a movie." i wish i had my 3dmm movies that i had made with my sister from when i was a kid. i'm sure it's on some (probably dead) hard drive somewhere.

It's true, I played this game for the first time in 15 years and knew exactly what to do. In Blender it took me about a week to make a donut. Excited for the future of 3dmm. Sorry about your movies, I think most of mine have met a similar fate 😕

Good job on the retrospective. While I haven’t been active in the community since the mid 2000s, I also used the program in 99 to 01 as a child and was a member of the forum. You nailed the recounting of the history of the community. It certainly is a unique piece of software. What I appreciate is the developers had their minds in the right place. They didn’t just make a child’s game where you pick pre-made assets and smashed them together with finite combinations. The developers really emphasized unlimited control in the user interface, and it shows and has been essential in the longevity of the game. The player really has no constraints on his or her imagination.

The "unlimited control" thing was hugely important to me. I remember being so excited for The Movies from Lionhead Studios and the immennse disappointment when I realised how little control you had over making the movies in the game. I went back to 3dmm.

I would LOVE to mess around with the "open source" or even the "original" 3DMM because there's a series I'm writing which is set in the 1990s so I totally want to capture the essence of that period of time, with all the jank that it entails.

Not much work has been done on the open source version I don't think, last time I checked Foone was working on reverse engineering Ski Free. Here's the github page, github.com/foone/3DMMForever. If you check out the 3DMM forums there should be a pre-setup virtual Windows XP Machine you can download for playing with some 3DMM, that's what I used for this video.

Just discovered your channel - you have a very good way of reviewing/narrating things! I remember seeing ads for 3D Movie Maker from inside another game as a kid (it also had that blue picasso-esque guy), and remember really wanting it and thinking that it's the coolest thing and imagining what I'd be able to do with it. I never did up getting it, but I did end up learning to use macromedia flash later on for cartoons and simple games, and later 3ds max as a kid which started off my self-taught education which culminated in being a unity dev. I can only imagine how many people started off with this and transitioned to something more professional.

I need to get back into 3dmm again. I remember getting it to work on my laptop no problems, but it was permanently stuck in a window and couldn't get it fullscreen.

There's a 3dmm virtual machine on the 3dmm forums I used, it's preset up with extensions and extra content and works out the box.

I think I know why I create animations today. I grew up loving to create insane stuff in 3DMM and the other one with Ren and Stimpy. I barely remember anything... Except that it was just sheer fun!

I made a Resident Evil hour long film and it was pretty amazing, but lost it to a house fire unfortunately. I'll have to see about remaking it, since I heard 3DMM is open source now and you can play it without the CDROM now.

I first played this is 1997 making stupid movies. I remember I didn't have a microphone so all dialogue was similar to McZee's Terror movie (just text). By the 2000s, I was using 3D text to build my own props and scenes and mainly used the black-only scene. I remember my brother and I making a montage of horror movies and replacing the villains/ghosts/zombies with the cat. I wonder if I still have it on one of the old PATA HDDs. Also I never used the Nickelodeon stuff because it was on a separate demo disc from the the main movie maker app. I didn't know how to combine it.

Damn, burger chase is gone (account terminated) and I can't find it on the wayback machine or anywhere at all online. Edit: I managed to find the video eventually thru going thru the 3dmm forums with wayback, though it looks like the author may have intentionally deleted it off the 3dmm forums.

@@ClassicEd yeah, it was certainly interesting, although I felt it would've been improved by being faster (leaves less time for jokes that don't land for a viewer to linger). Also, really liking your channel, discovered it thru this video and I love the topics and what you reflect upon. Couldn't be happier to have found it, really scratches a certain itch for me.

I dunno if you've watched it yet, but I think my favorite 3D Movie Maker movie so far has to be _Blue_ _Shell_ _Incident._ While I can't deny Diabolical Delightment (and other 3DMM movies by Will and Chris) is a classic epic, Blue Shell Incident is one I'd say is a modern epic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sUT2kKZeUpo.html It may not be the most visually ambitious, it may not be the most gory, and it may not be over-the-top raunchy, but it makes up for it with a memorable cast of characters, quotable dialogue, well-executed visual gags, and an engaging plot inspired by the Metal Gear games. Made across 15 livestreams in the span of 15~ months, the overall quality of the animation and movement starts off pretty basic at the start, but it improves more and more as the film goes on.

Bro, I could not figure out how to remove the text to simulate conversation without refreshing it to a new scene. Did it once, and all the example films had it. Bothers me till this day. The movies i made could of been more epic. Not really, but would of been nice xD at least i had fun with the microphone i guess.

@@dustingdustin oh wow I didn't know you made it. Honestly one of the most impressive things anyone has ever made. Every time I think I've found the most impressive 3dmm movie something else comes along and blows it away. Kind of hoping 3dmm gets some renewed interest with the open source work going on. Sorry I didn't mention it in the video, I just hadn't come across it at the time. I was just watching things that popped up on RU-vid recommended feed as I worked on it.
