Im a cabinetmaker and I’d employ you any day of the week. First class work and liked how you stayed calm - too many plasterers are stressed out and racing - creates a stressful worksite. Lovely work.
I'm an artist/owner-builder on my 4th building. I like plastering, it's an incredibly satisfying thing to get the nice finish of a cool to the touch plastered wall. This video is amazing, so full of information, you need to watch it at least twice. And the professional attitude is second to none, a joy to watch.
My old dad found plastering quite taxing on his body in the last 10 years of his work life, so he tried to specialise in doing the small jobs that no other plasterers really wanted. He had ties with electricians, window fitters and plumbers and basically went around filling chases and small voids after the workmen and snagging. He said in the last years of working he made the most money ever for the least amount of work. If he didn't opt to do this sort of work, he is convinced his body would be a wreck in his old age.
They were a different Breed back then. I have x4 Brothers. We all all Spreads. My old man is a spread. He was 76 Last week. And still got a trowel in his hand. He's slowed down now. Only smaller jobs. But up until 4/⁵ yrs ago. He would still be plastering Chimneys off roof ladders. Bringing down Gable ends on his own with a labourer 💪👊👏
Probably one if the best plastering videos i have watched on RU-vid. He is straight down the line very informative and points out the finest of details on what NOT to do and why. As another person mentioned it was very good to see him working along the bottom with the trowel making the job easier for the joiners and also to see him fill a hole in the wall which he did Not have to do, what a genuine and caring bloke top man, thanks for showing us your amazing work and giving newbies like me a better crack of the whip and making it easy to understand without waffling. Thanks very much Bristol Lad 😊👍💪
That's because as a spread we don't get time to clean em. I worked on site for 40yrs as a plasterer and using sand/cement backing with carlite finish or lime. The speed went up over the years as new plasters came out, like toughcoat/hardwall and so on. With speed came cutbacks, socket boxes, ceiling rose holes and so forth were left as-is because trowelling over 80 metres in one go gave no time to stop, let alone clean boxes out. I have cleaned boxes out in households which I have not done many, as most of my work was on large stuff; schools, warehouses, gyms and hospitals.
Plastering for nearly 40 years nice to see nice neat clean job with the sockets cleaned out I used to fix thinbead with gripfill adhesive it saves lots of problems just push bead on small brush to blend, oh and marshmallows corner trowel a godsend.
I'm a chippy by trade and i was on site with the plastering guy one time and i said let me have a go it will be a doddle. Got the trowel about 30cm up and thought i best stick to woodwork. Lesson learnt! Plastering is an art and not for the DIY novice
Currently have a plaster in my house right now... chippy as well. I did all the plasterboard and bead work .. could never get the skim off the hawk 😅😅😅 so that's why he's in
Howdo kirk, i watch a lot of the plasterers on here, i can plaster, render and everything else to a good standard, but i still like to see how others do it to see if i can learn anything from anyone else. I noticed when you turned up and started saying about flexi trowels, all the others who post plastering vids changed their tune, lol, you are the most real of all of them, i have picked up a few things from you, nobody knows it all ! Keep up the good work.
Great video thank you as a Diy renovation my house learning from you, tried plastering many times i can do around sockets, small holes and a 12 inch square patching up is my limit, would give anything to have your amazing skills and patience, keep up the great work and fantastic channel ❤
I've just signed up for a home DIY course having recently bought a project of a house. I've never plastered before and it's a little bit daunting but I'm really looking forward to having a go. These videos are brilliant. Thank you💪
Those courses are a waste of time and money they will only teach you what the guy in video will teach you for free. Just skimming is easy enough as long as you have sealed the wall properly you will have plenty of time to fanny around with it just start with a small wall like a chimney breast
@@colhughes3892That's not the best advice! Some People have never never touched a tool in their lives let alone put a mix on! If they get shown how to knock up a proper mix and load and hold a towel properly that's worth its weight in gold! I've been to plenty of people's houses who have just "watched" a RU-vid video and it's ended up costing them thousands for me to put things right!
Never learn anything from those courses, I did a 4 year apprenticeship in plastering that taught me the basics and all the rest was just on the job, but the biggest tip is practice, practice, practice and don't use dirty water in a mix otherwise you end up wearing it as my mentor was a old school veteran from the days when they used to wear a shirt and tie to work lol
The most important method to take from this video is to apply two coats, 2nd coat little milker than the first make sure the skim coat does not have any little hard lumps in the bag when mixing 2nd coat, smooth first coat before you put on 2nd .
Great video tanx for the upload,if ever you decide to come of the tools you could open up a plastering school, you have a great in depth way of explaining things👍👌
This is exactly what I did before starting to use bonding half time. 100% it’s easier to gauge how fast you want it to go off with cement. The darker the mix is the quicker it goes off 👌🏼
True artist! Bravo..Specially for plastering where the worktops go..Something only 1% of tradesmen would do and it's such a criterion of professionalism.
As a plasterer with 25 of experience use to do kitchen, bathroom and wc for councils for over 8 years and i used to do all in the same day, including the ceilings ceilings
Good job. 👍 Every aspect considered. ⭐ My apparent award winning plasterer moaned about every room, took matters into his own hands after being given specific instructions, complained about and argued with other trades on site, set bent beads, stopped 3-5 inches from the floor, left gaps between the wall and ceiling, and covered all floors, cables, pipes, and windows in plaster and then left without cleaning. Just earned himself a new award from me... #1 worst plasterer ever. 🏆
Why did he seem to be an award winner? Did he make this claim? Plasterers are bound by codes and regulations to follow certain standards. It is not the plasterer's prerogative to leave a job incomplete or to spread plaster where it does not belong. If I were you, then I would seek recourse.
@@satchelsatchel Yes... he and others did make this "award winning" claim, and it was published online. The main issue I had by the end is that he just wasn't as good as he thought he was. Maybe winning an award had gone to his head? All I know is, the contractor who recommended him haven't used him again since his performance on my project. I had too much on my plate to seek recourse, so I just settled his bill to get rid of him. My time was worth more to me than any amount I would have looked for in compensation.
As I approach my 65th birthday I have to say that these jobs are few and far between,,you simply cannot get them all the time,BUT this fella is a tradesman, clean work and is trying to help people so rock on and keep the videos coming
Great work Kirk I’ve just found your channel through suggestions on other videos and I’ve got to say your not one of these one skim Jim’s you see going viral doing ridiculous sets on board work. It’s nice to see normal tradesmen taking jobs seriously and getting a good finish even on a late start👍🏻 Im a joiner by trade but also a plasterer nailing timber together is a very hard job indeed 😉😂😂
Love the videos! Especially the extra bits you do for the following tradesman.. as a decorator a lot of the time I see things left for the decorator to do. So nice touch on that. Keep up the good videos 👊
This was me other day haha kitchen after first job. When your driving there your thinking of the plan. SBR straight on then prep and off you go. I can relate
Good professional work ethic my son AND nice ‘quiet’ hands on the trowel for a big guy 👏💪👍 If the customer doesn’t like the price for quality work - then let the ‘rough’ squad in!!
I did a one-year's plastering course at college in 2014 and got a certificate so i skimmed my own living room walls and i felt so proud of myself because it looked pretty smooth i was showing pictures to my tutor he said well done but then it got a lick of emulsion paint and then all of the indentations started to appear so it put me off and i never picked up a trowel since
Painter & decorator 38yrs & i know a good one when i see one, my trade i follow the plasterer & a good plasterer is gold dust, it's hard bloody work I've tried it but im useless 👍 masks on fella when mixing as that shit is no good to breath in , im speaking from exp old skool tradesman who are affected by it 👍
I gave a lot of work to plasterer in greater Manchester area… I had to clean up all the time because they didn’t use masking tape , I was told they didn’t want to spend the money, so I started to tape everything of myself
Having been plastering for 40 years or more, about 20 of those years with my dad , who taught me , it's a pleasure to see someone with pride in his work and doing thins logically. Also, while you are clearly fast enough it's great to see a job without a bloody mess everywhere. No point slapping it on like a loon when there's more on the floor.
It's true - some plasterers do make a hell of a mess. In fact this chap is the cleanest plasterer I've ever seen (I've not seen that many - I usually do my own (slowly and badly - plastering well is hard!))
Oh man. I was a plasterer for 10yrs. It was torture 😂 earnt 1k a week site plastering. But I lost my mind. Retrained as a bricklayer. Similar earnings. Wasn't as hard...I mean...hard but not as testing as plastering. Now...I'm a construction project manager. University as a mature student was difficult. But it was worth it. More money less work...physically of course.
Skimming hangs longer on sbr, thats why that gauge took longer than 3 hours. Should of put pva/sbr on walls before bonding chases then you wouldn't have had problem with sbr mixing in with skimming.
Hey kirk if them lazy sparks didnt tuck them cables in we didnt clean out the boxs, but if they cut and tucked the cables in, then fair enough we cleaned them out, most of them didnt
Had some lad I worked with years ago got so annoyed with sparks not leaving cables in boxes he’d cut the cables all same length and add an extra cable screwed to the stud so it would fuck them up😂😂 site manager was fuming with him though😂😂😂😂
As my job was a tiler for many years, not all plasters care about the tiler coming in after them. Yes they plaster and cover the walls, but how many plasters, make sure that the plastering they have done is straight and flat for the tiler ,answer none ,they don't care as long as they have their money. This guy is a nice guy, he got 600 pounds to plaster this kitchen, then the unites draws and everything else is fitted, that will cost around between 1,500 to 2000 pounds, then the tiler goes in and prices his jobs ,and the number of times ,i had people say how much, when i was asking around 200 to 250 pounds to tiler it. well you have to explain most of the time that ,the plaster has covered the wall ,but it is not straight, so it is not a case of just throwing them up. I bet thee is a lot of tilers out there who will tell you the same. But saying that in the end i went on a 6 week course ,and did the plastering as well myself and the walls were straight.
Use SBR if you want ripples and lumps in your finished skim where it’s not gripped, I’m not a fan of it personally, £600 for an afternoons work I don’t know any spreads round my way who are getting those prices.
Was thinking exactly the same thing £600 wow only used three bags of board finish there is no way in a million years I would like to see inside that envelope
@@user-tw9is4it8e Only ways he gets a price like that the clients been let down and they have no choice but to accept his price, they’re stupid and can’t count or they are generally used to having their pants pulled down when they pay for work. Round my way at the moment there’s a real shortage of work even sites have cut back on building houses and privately there isn’t a lot and what there is everyone’s chasing it and under cutting. There are too many bullshitters out there and not enough guys telling the truth.
Wow it’s nice to hear that think about the chiippys coming behind you. I do the same and think about the decorators coming next. If only everyone could think like this!
I love how you consider the next tradesman's job and make sure you don't make it hard for them. Nobody seems to do that nowadays, they are just in and out as fast as possible doing the bare minimum they can get away with.
Nice video, i’m from the netherlands and wondering why the first part bonder and the finish have this reddish colour? in my country it is grey or white
Plastering is an art and worth every penny, nearly everyone can plaster but not everyone can do it properly, i’ve known plaster come off when a door is slammed 😂
Plastering is a bad habit once you've mastered it you can do it in your sleep .......you certainly don't have to go to college to learn this .....oh and very rarely any drawings to have to read ........I started out as a joiner then went plastering with a plastering mate of mine ......joinery is far more difficult on the brain than spreading .......... Not knocking just saying
@@plipertyplap4899 I'm thinking of getting into the game. But more and more places look for qualified plasterers. Are you saying it's better to start off by working with a plasterer(like a helper, apprentice type thing) instead of say, doing your NVQ 3 in plaster training?
@@alwayslearning7672 I started as a joiner I always played about with a plastering trowel but it was only when I went working with a plasterer that my work reached the required standard and I got fast enough to get some meteridge on ... plastering is hard dirty work I developed skin problems because of it had both knees replaced and an elbow opp .... BUT all I can say to you is give it a go try to get with a reputable plasterer that will teach you ......trust me after a short time you will know wether or not you want to do it day in day out yearly.........there is nothing glamorous about being a plasterer but you will earn money 🤑 ......good luck
what the fuck man. i'm plastering a wall right now and i've used 8 hours to get halfway on the first coat. i thought the tools you used was for a different type of construction. this stuff is alien here in Norway. I will get these tools and do it the right way going forward. thank you! and for this job i would happily pay 1000 pounds easy
im a sparky who does a little bit of plastering, mainly I started out doing it to learn how to fix my own fuckups but its really quite handy to know. I've found its hard to find a good plasterer or good tiler here in Australia, but fuck doing tiling I'll leave that for the tilers
Plastering is just about the only thing I can’t do to save my life. Love watching you guys do that as it looks so easy. Only one question is it normal to put two coats of finish plaster ? Cleaning out the socket boxes you are giving plasterers a bad name. I thought the idea was to hide them so we need to get the metal detector out
