Learn how to pot your orchid in a moss ball. This is a really fun way to pot your phalaenopsis/moth orchids. Watch the video for my special tip that will keep your orchid roots from rotting in the center.
Great video! I have not looked to see if you have one so what I say next is in ignorance. However, I would have loved to see you prep the plant, sterilize your shears, etc. as well. I love that you have expanded your content to include videos, thank you!
I think this is a great idea, but putting a layer of sphag moss on the ball, then place plant and follow up with final topping coat of sphag moss would be much easier and have a better outcome. And moist sphag moss, nit dripping wet too.
How do you repot if the roots grow all throughout the whiffle ball as orchid roots tend to go wherever they can? Or do you just leave it on the ball and just replace the sphag?
I haven't had that problem. The roots seem to just grow around the ball. I have found that sphagnum moss deteriorates after about a year and need to be repotted for best results.
Is there a specific brand of New Zealand moss you like to use? I see many online so would like to know if one is better than the other so far as quality goes. Also do you have any updates on how your orchids are doing with this method? Thanks, great tutorial!
