Finally got around to seeing why faster bullets hurt more than bigger bullets But was too lazy to read while having dinner This concept is why railguns are devastating but I never comprehended that Now I like the concept of a small, lightweight lead spewing SMGs a little less and the hard hitting, heavy-arse rifles a little more

@@jeckol3200 to a point. Just remember, faster something goes, harder it is to stop it. That's why rifle rounds are designed to "tumble" on impact. To act like a speedbreak as well as increased lethality. But the faster you go, the more likely you are to go clean through your target and hit something behind it. That's why I opted to use the 5.7x28 round instead. Fast enough to punch through lv 3 non-plated armor I could buy myself, but not so strong that it will hit 3 different people.

@BenjaminSteber
@BenjaminSteber 4 года назад
This is true with the slight caveat that there is a negligible amount of energy lost from the bullet in any type of gas-operated automatic rifle. That energy is instead transferred to the gas tube or piston to force the bolt carrier backward, unlocking and withdrawing the bolt while also re-cocking the hammer, after which the rear spring will push the carrier forward feeding a round from the magazine into the receiver and on into the chamber, fully cycling the weapon. All that energy initially came from the previously fired round.

Yes, bullets fired from rifles are generally faster then those fired from a handgun. Doesn't matter the type of rifle, just the caliber. Doesn't matter if it's a semiautomatic or bolt action. Semiautos rifles do not fire bullets at a higher speed than a bolt action rifle. In fact it's the opposite, most semiautos lose a little velocity over a bolt action. Got to love the propaganda hiding behind some scientific facts and many arguments that are not fact. Like how you say that it is semi-automatic rifles when there are plenty of bolt-action rifles that shoot way more devastating rounds. And yes that's what guns and bullets were designed to do from the very beginning when they were made. In other news knives cut because they are sharp and that's what they were designed to do. And this guy talks about an AK-47 but he never even mentions which caliber. Which we all know it is an anemic caliber compared to the stuff that was used during World War II. As it turns out these calibers used in AR-15 AK-47 and AK-74 are tiny in comparison because they were mainly made to wound send it is better to wounded soldier since it takes more people to rescue him and take him out of the battle. Which is why only Full Metal Jacket bullets are used in war. You people know nothing about guns and you get someone that knows very little to make a propaganda video trying to explain something you know nothing about.

I found the title misleading. 556 is at the bottom of the chart of rifle cartridge power. 556 was chosen bc it wounds and with its reduced power does not overheat barrels when firing a high volume of shots. I think comparing 556 with a 30-378 or 300 ultra mag shows much higher levels of energy and damage. Also important is to explain how rifles are typically much more powerful then pistols, this is normal not sinister. I still feel all bullets are potentially lethal(matter of penetration of vital tissue and not energy)and you should avoid being hit by any.

There have been bolt action rifles chambered in this cartridge for at least 60 years. The "devasating wounds" are not created because the firearm is a semi-automatic rifle; they are created because the round is traveling at a very high velocity. It can be fired from any number of platforms. I hate watching/listening people that hate guns try to explain why guns are bad. If you can't be correct at least try to be honest.

@MTMILITIAMAN7.62
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 2 года назад
@@gameragodzilla It doesn't matter. Energy is nearly useless as an indicator of handgun power because handguns lack the velocity necessary to use energy like rifles do. The only energy that contributes to wounding in a handgun is permanent crush cavity. Your .50 AE doesn't have the velocity to damage tissue with its stretch cavity. I've seen deer shot with both the 5.56 and the .50 AE. The 5.56 did more tissue damage. The .50 penetrated deeper. But the wound channel for the 5.56 was wider by a significant degree. Because whereas the .50 AE wasted a bunch of energy displacing tissue without damage, the 5.56 had enough velocity to create a stretch cavity. At projectile impacts below about 2200 fps, most tissue is elastic enough to stretch and deform, then return the normal without damage. The temporary stretch cavity still uses energy at handgun velocities, but the energy doesn't damage tissue, so it doesn't contribute significantly to wounding. At rifle velocities, tissue can't deform far or fast enough. The pressure wave around the bullet tears and damages tissue, often for several inches around the bullet. This effect is rarely present with handguns. Velocity is critical to effectiveness because it not only increases energy, but at some point, around 2200 fps, it actually allows the bullet to use its energy to contribute to wounding in ways handguns simply don't.
@gameragodzilla
@gameragodzilla 2 года назад
@@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 Why is velocity the only relevant factor? If that was truly the case, shotgun slugs would wound like pistols because the projectile also impacts below 2200 fps, which is clearly not true. So I find your assertions doubtful. lol
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62
@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 2 года назад
@@gameragodzilla It is not the only factor, but it is the most important factor. Shotgun slugs do perform like handgun bullets, just very big one. The design of the Foster style slug has a lot to do with this, as it tends to flatten, then break apart into several pieces, causing several large wound tracts. They are devastating, but they don't produce the hydrostatic pressure that high velocity rifle rounds do. It isn't just my assertions, based on a life time of shooting and hunting, experience in the military, and my current career working for a gun manufacture. It is also the published and peer reviewed research of the International Wound Ballistics Association, Dr. Martin Fackler (a career military surgeon who witnessed thousands of gunshot wounds), numerous medical professionals, and ammunition manufactures.

@1001Hobbies
@1001Hobbies 2 года назад
@@Remix2366 - Nope. At the beginning of the video the narrator says "What happens inside YOUR body when someone shoots you with a semi-automatic rifle...." as if this is not what happens to the 2 or 3 guys who are raiding your home when you shoot THEM. In other words, this is also what happens to the people attacking you. WaPo wants to put the viewer in the receiving end of the gun rather than on the life-saving end. They also say "Semi-automatic rifles shoot bullets must faster than handguns." Well, the secret is....EVERY RIFLE shoots bullets faster than handguns. Bolt action rifles shoot bullets faster than handguns because rifles typically shoot a "rifle round" which is a bullet with more gun powder behind it. Also, the long barrel of a rifle (bolt action, semi-auto, lever action) fires bullets that go faster because the longer barrel enables a longer time of accelerating the round that is shot. This video is incredibly misleading, which is what they were going for. The "semi-automatic" feature of a rifle is nothing more than how the next round is chambered to be fired. Nothing else.

Rifle rounds aren't designed to tumble on impact. All spitzer, or pointed projectiles have their center of gravity located towards the base. This means they have a tendency to want to flip around and fly with their base, their center of mass, forward. The rifling in the bore of the rifle which gives the rifle its name imparts a spin on the projectile to give it gyroscopic stability. But it is only stable in air. When it hits a media more dense than air, like tissue, it will once again become unstable and have a tendency to yaw, so it can flip around and fly with its center of mass forward. Rifles are given pointed projectiles to make them more aerodynamic, so they cut through the air easier without losing as much velocity. The tendency of the round to flip in tissue is just a side effect. The reason yawing in tissue increases tissue damage is because it increases the amount of surface area exposed perpendicular to the vector of the bullet's flight. Remember caliber, the diameter of the bullet is important, for this same reason. More exposed surface area displaces more tissue and imparts more energy. Energy is only part of the story. How energy is used is at least as important as the amount of energy a projectile has. Velocity is a critical component to how energy reacts to tissue. Living tissue is elastic. Some organs more so than others. But a lot of the tissue in the human body is elastic enough to deform and stretch when hit by a projectile. At the velocity handguns operate at, tissue will stretch and deform, then return to normal with little to no damage. Displacing this tissue still took energy, but this energy didn't contribute to wounding because it didn't damage tissue, it just displaced it. Most handgun projectile operate around the speed of sound, about 900 to 1200 fps. At the velocity a rifle projectile operates at, typically 2400 to 3000+ fps, tissue can not stretch far or fast enough. It tears, the high pressure wave around the bullet is able to damage tissue, literally killing cells, often for several inches beyond the path of the bullet. A .45 ACP will put a hole some fraction on an inch through you. A 5.56 round will blow a hole the size of a tennis ball through you. We saw someone's bicep turned into a red mist in Kenosha by a high velocity .224 caliber projectile; literally a fist sized chunk of muscle turned into atmosphere, just gone. No handgun round will do that, because while the bullet is much bigger, it is not going fast enough to use its energy like a high velocity rifle. Something like one in three people shot through the chest with a handgun dies. Whereas one in three people shot through the chest with a rifle lives. Rifles are orders of magnitude more effective than handguns not just because they possess more energy, but because they operate at a velocity high enough for the energy to contribute to wounding.

Velocity doesn't necessarily mean more damage, there's a thing called "overpenetration," and full metal jacket rounds tend to leave permanent cavities the size of the bullet diameter or caliber of the projectile, unless they hit a bone or . In any case, a hunting rifle round typically has 2 to 3 times the kinetic energy at the muzzle of the round used in an AR-15, and they carry that energy across longer distances, on top of having a larger bullet. They also tend to have more desirable wounding characteristics, which is why hunting laws often prohibit the use of smaller projectiles like the .223 Remington. Projectile design is also an enormous factor, and the doctor completely left out the behavior of jacketed hollow point ammunition, which expands on impact, creating drag and a larger permanent wound channel. Most police departments use JHP ammunition in their handguns for this reason, due to increased permanent cavitation. There's also no clear indication on how the temporary cavity translates to wounding. That said, the .223 Remington/5.56mmx45mm is a very effective cartridge beneath 100 meters range with a 16 inch barrel. It's just not anywhere near as effective as grandpa's hunting rifle chambered in .30-06 or .308 Remington.

i hope hes a good doctor, he is no ballistic expert. i don't think hes ever seen a gun fired even on TV. a round from an AR is exactly the same as one fired in a bolt action. the tumble is a total myth that use to be they "tumble in flight" myth but now they claim they are little blenders or explode. everything else he described is damage that every bullet ever made can do from any gun. the main round used in an AR is to weak to legally use for hunting. most pistols are more powerful, 357 or 44mag 10mm? those you can use on bear legally but not the AR in 223/556
