How Presidents Govern: Crash Course Government and Politics #14

This week Craig Benzine talks about how the President gets things done. Filling the role of the Executive Branch is a pretty big job - much too big for just one person. It's so big that the President employs an entire federal bureaucracy! Today, we’re just going to focus on those closest to the President, like the Vice President, the Cabinet, and the Executive Office of the President. We’ll figure out which strategy is most useful in helping the President make things happen and we’ll discuss the controversy around the President’s gradual increase in power. Oh, and as many of you noticed - last episode eagle got off too easy. Let’s see if we can make it up to you.

Being a postal worker, I'll have you know that the Post Office is actually incredibly profitable. It just happens to also be in a great deal of debt because the majority of it's reserve funds were taken away from it by the federal government to subsidize social security in the late 90s. The recession didn't help the Post Office at all, thus the many post office shutdowns. But now that the economy is improving, the Post Office is doing fairly well. We're all just hoping the feds don't take more money from us. Because we've almost got ourselves out of the hole financially speaking.

Mystogan Edolas sounds a lot like what happened to the roman empire too. the superpower builds itself up and then when overinflated, it gets popped by something "insignificant". actually, here's a few empires from history that would fall into his niche: Russian Empire, Soviet Union, Ottoman Empire, Persian Empire, British Empire. they all have fallen when they were "too big to fail" :P
@FieldMarshalFry
@FieldMarshalFry 9 лет назад
***** well not the British Empire, it fell as the country went bankrupt fighting the Nazi's and the United States demanded we get rid of it in order to receive any aid (loans) to make sure Britain was no longer a global superpower

The postal service isn't doing well because Congress passed a bill in 2006 requiring it to meet unreasonable pension requirements, and prohibiting it from engaging in activities that were designed to raise a profit. It's less to do with the rise in email and more do with Congress deliberately hamstringing it.

Administrative strategy is important because, especially now, we live in an age of presidential government. The executive branch is huge. (Thanks to usurpation of the executive branch during FDR times) The president has permanent agencies that perform defined management tasks for the president. This is reffered to as the institutional presidency

HeeminGamin You're partially right. I did post the comment immediately after the second punch out of joy. However, I didn't feel the need to correct myself after seeing the third punch because I figured the fact that he clearly pointed it out would make it patently obvious that I had posted it before he'd done it. Clearly I have once again over estimated the internet.

I don't live in the USA, I'm from England, so I guess what I'm about to say is coming from a not so informed source. I think Barack Obama is the best president the USA has had for a long time. I mean, he's a likeable guy, or at least I like what I've seen of him. He's implemented some very interesting polices (Obama-care for 1) and looking from the outside, he seems as if he actually cares for the foreign image of the USA (which you must admit 'Murican bro's you really do need help there) He's more liberal, and being a liberal type of guy, I like this as I've always saw the USA as more of a 'inward' looking, conservative country interested primarily on it's own affairs. And lastly I think he's a genuinely 'good' guy who really does seem to want to do the USA's citizens proud. Now I know he's not universally popular (who ever is?) and I hear a lot of American's berate Barack and I'd like to know why.
@lolpauve

Ooshgaar Obama is liberal? Hah... HAH! Good one. Obama is a good president? *Dying from laughter* Sure, sure....
@Ooshgaar
@Ooshgaar 9 лет назад
lolpauve Well ok. As I've said I'm looking from the outside in, and I've not really done much in the way of research into the guy. So, I can see you not a fan of his. Please elaborate.
@lolpauve
@lolpauve 9 лет назад
Ooshgaar Oh dear where to begin. Well one, breaking of or attempting to break campaign promises. Remember the whole "bring our troops home" thing? In fact, his administration was heavily lobbying Prime Minister Maliki for a status of forces agreement to allow some U.S. troops to remain in Iraq after 2011. It was only the refusal by the Iraqis which forced complete withdrawal of U.S. troops. Similarly in Afghanistan, he said something along the lines of getting them out in summer of 2011. However, not only did he not get them out, he escalated it into the border region of Pakistan. That's number one. Number two, the general shitting of civil liberties which granted mainly done by his administration and not him directly but he's the president and does have control over some of it, which he definitely did not use for good. *Cough* Drone strikes *cough* and Gitmo/Bagram/Gitmo North and military tribunals to which Obama said first, paraphrasing "hell no" and when he got into office his attitude was more like "well ok". Gay rights is another thing. Obama in 2012: Well i think everyone is equal but I can't be bothered to lift a finger about it. (Note that was not an actual quote, that was just my interpretation of a statement he made during the second presidential campaign. But this is just what I've picked up on, I reccomend you skim through this: www.obamatheconservative.com/ and I do mean skim since it's quite long and comprehensive (and well written and well sourced.

@Sethbeastalan
@Sethbeastalan 9 лет назад
Ooshgaar He's not wrong that Obama has done many conservative things, but to call him conservative from an American perspective (pretty much all American politicians are conservative from a European perspective) is flat out wrong. Also, as Greg pointed out in this very video, it's hard for presidents to get things done with a divided Washington. And finally, here's a good look at Obama's campaign promises. www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/obameter/

***** majority = more than half 1992 presidential election popular vote: Clinton - 43% Bush - 37.5% Perot - 19% 2000 presidential election popular vote: Bush - 47.9% Gore - 48.4% The elected president in these elections was not voted for by the majority of people. /watch?v=W9H3gvnN468 And false, 1 vote is not equal when you consider the number of electoral college votes is not proportionate to the population of a state. /watch?v=7wC42HgLA4k Google can answer most of our questions, we just have to ask...and check the sources.

I think the best approach is not giving an executive more power during emergency, but building the executive to be the first reaction if necessary. I don't think the president in our day and age needs more limitations. executive order allows a president to make an immediate choice. obviously some things can't be done like declaring war, but being able to set up new departments, provide emergency funds or security, or even just new regulation for emerging markets like online gun sales, all things that can be stalled in Congress for years. the new deal was mostly written in the constitutional spirit: it gave the president more executive power, but that power is balanced out by Congress being able to basically veto an executive order. if the president abuses that power, they can be impeached. since most executive orders are eventually approved or denied as law by Congress, I don't see any issue with the person half of the voting population of America elected using executive order. I'm not saying the president is god or anything, but the new deal was an answer to a big problem, the problem of Congress being too slow to react in many cases. it's obvious that at least in some situations waiting on congressional litigation is a problem.
