Want to start an extremely successful and profitable business? Setup a primer manufacturing facility... It's like "printing money", at todays rates, and they will practically be sold in advance of them even being made (backordered)...
Here is part of how it's done.
) You will need to make cups and anvils on a draw press
) You will need to perfect and test your primer raw material
) Jigs to allow assembly and pressing of the anvils and cups
) Licenses to Manufacture
) Insurance and Liability + LLC
) Testing and QA, lot numbers, etc..
Fair Use claimed on the content from within a historical ammunition manufacturing facility for educational purposes.

The primer shortage is mostly due to the fact that there have been three severe accidents in the last five years (Lake City, GD-OTS Canada, and RUAG Ammotec) and because ammunition sales are at an all-time-high. Primers are more complicated than you may think and making primers is a lot more difficult than this video shows. Primers must be essentially 100% reliable - working every time and at every temperature (-50F to + 160F) , especially in the case of military ammunition. They must be sensitive enough and not too sensitive. They must age well even when stored improperly. When explosives age poorly, it means they become unstable and therefore become dangerous. The combustion products cannot be poisonous and cannot be corrosive. The combustion products must contain a mixture of hot gas and hot particles for consistent propellant ignition. You can't just pick any impact sensitive explosives for a primer. Primers are made on a massive scale. There are just a few companies that manufacture them and all of them make one to two billion per year. Why? Because the equipment for making tetracene and lead styphnate is expensive to buy and expensive to operate, with ultra-safe procedures. And finally, the processes result in large amounts of waste water that must be treated and monitored. For that reason, most ammunition companies do not make their own primers. Almost all of the primer manufacturing I have seen uses this same ~100 year-old method and chemistry simply because it is proven. There are some newer chemistries. DDNP (Diazodinitrophenol) primers that are lead-free have been made since the 1980's. Unfortunately, performance is temperature sensitive and they become inconsistent with age in poor storage conditions. The newest chemistry under consideration is nano-thermite primers, sometimes called MIC (meta-stable intermolecular composite), that use extremely fine thermite fuels and oxidizers to mimic the behavior of a high explosive. I don't recommend trying to make your own primers, except as an exercise. There are a lot of pitfalls, but the processes and chemistry are really interesting.

The byproduct of a used primer is toxic and is why many indoor range employees end up with lead poisoning. Just making this clear so that no one makes the mistake of thinking primers are non-toxic and it is safe to shoot indoors with improper ventilation. "There are several sources of potential lead exposure from shooting guns and firing ranges. Most bullet projectiles are made from lead, but a large amount of lead is also present in the primer, composed of approximately 35% lead styphnate and lead peroxide (and also contains barium and antimony compounds), that ignites in a firearm barrel to provide the propulsion for the projectile [9-13]. A portion of the lead bullet disintegrates into fine fragments while passing through the gun due to misalignments of the gun barrel [9]. The lead particles, along with dust and fumes originating from the lead primer and the bullet fragments are ejected at high pressures (18,000-20,000 psi; 124-128 mpa) from the gun barrel, a large proportion of which occurs at right angles to the direction of fire in close proximity to the shooter [9]. The shooter can inhale fine Pb particulates (mainly from the primer) which constitutes the proximal exposure pathway. " www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5379568/ The byproducts of both the primer and smokeless powder are also plenty corrosive as well (mostly the smokeless powder), but that isn't as important as people knowing that primers can poison them and cause brain damage.

The big manufacturers that make all the primers have been stockpiling the primers and not Distributing them to the smaller ammunition manufacturers causing a shortage as well as a price spike in ammo and primers because other smaller manufacturers have to slow down or stop making ammo for lack of primers and the big manufacturers are pocketing all the increased profits from the primer stockpiling.

LOL. Yeah, I just wanted to see what the process was for making them and I'm just wondering with how much demand for primers is going to be for the next few years why companies aren't expanding production by buying machines to make more primers? It's like, I get why they wouldn't want to expand production for fixed ammunition, but primers is literally just a stamped cup, anvil, and some paste. Doesn't seem like a lot of money to invest to meet current demand.

Maybe they would worry they are "feeding the competition" with primers to fill a competitor's cartridge that is not a part of the monopoly. The "high price of entry" is in itself a barrier for most, until you get groups of investors to start an ammo plant, at which point there is more profit in the whole rounds, even though primers are also quite profitable. Metals futures also play a role, but trust me, they are making a killing in profits... Tip, boycott ammo until the prices come down... Supply and Demand... Gun ranges are going out of business because of this...

Guys, I don't know how to tell you this, but primers will go the way of all its predecessors, in a corner next to antique curios & reenactment buffs & the occasional "back in MY day..." porch dweller. The way forward is the "e-tron x", where the "firing pin" was just a little contact extending to just touch the 'primer' contact. No trigger issues, no take-up time or oscillations from hammers moving, and in the end it's easy to make your own at home, just as easy as making a squib to light a solid fuel rocket 'motor'. Extremely easy to make, even easier to automate with today's electronics manufacturers. Imagine the possibilities, and imagine that whatever you could imagine is nowhere near the imaginations yet to be imagined.

It's the same bull as flying cars, hover boards and energy weapons: looks cool on movies and fiction, but is useless and can't compete with actual reality. A cartridge, with it's propellent, bullet and primer is one of the most easilly made and secure technology of modern times. Once a small batch is made and tested, all it takes is quality control and safety protocols to keep making something that can be stored for years without worry. Now compare that to electrical nonsense - where it is necessary to use capacitors, which go bad in a 2 to 3 years (electrolytic capacitors - high values of energy storage), are affected by temperature, metal contacts that can act in so many weird ways, integrated circuits which are sensitive, and it is easy to understand how stupid that concept is to apply to something that needs to be dependable and safe at all times, in all conditions. The truth is and will always be, the more complex a machine is, easier it is to malfunction.

I said, and I quote " It's the same bull as flying cars, hover boards and energy weapons: looks cool on movies and fiction, but is useless and can't compete with actual reality." What is useless is not the techonology, is the masses trying to push sci fi concepts into institutions and ignoring reality. There is a reason why the military is so slow to accept new technologies, in contrast to the tacticools who want to implement every new fad: new technology needs to be tested, and in most cases fails myserable at testing. That is why you don't see electric tanks or military vehicles, or board computers taking over manual aptitute in most places. Those technologies are tecticool, but are not reliable. Same with guns. It's a fact that an explosive primer IS the most reliable technology implemented. It would be better developinng new primer mistures (like thermite primers) than goofing around with electronics. One more thing, combustion engines don't use apacitors to ignition, they use coils, inductance based. If there is capcitors in the loop, they would be really low values, which don't suffer the degradation effect i mentioned. All the electronic bull that is put in modern cars is just that, nonsense to attract consumers and icrease prize. A car don't need all that to work. Just as it did not need it 100 years go.

We need a single machine that can punch cups, punch anvils, load them into a continuous batch feed process, meter in the paste, and combine the anvil... The method shown here is not 100% automated... If one could make a fully automated machine, then loading materials would be the only intervention on a 24x7 machine. (and occasional punch press tool changes) no need to copy the method shown, which is likely an "old school" way of doing it... "Full Automation" would be the way to go, then the next step would be to automate the materials loading. Who has the formula for the green paste? Am I going to have to de-prime a cartridge and send it off to a Mass Spectrometer lab and find out for myself?
@schoof5054
@schoof5054 2 года назад
I think plenty of us could convene and try to formulate a safe homemade primer mix that could get us a head start on creating homemade cartridges. If you send some of that primer mix to be tested under a mass spectrometer they may be able to give you an idea of what compounds are within the mixture given they don't accidentally set off the mix while handling it. I'm interested in finding ways to make homemade cartridges completely from raw materials and I think small caliber cartridges could be done with a few simple tools already available to most reloader's. Small cartridges like 22lr may be able to be drawn through dies on a regular reloading press from flat brass shim stock and formed into safe to fire cartridges but the only thing left from there is finding a way to synthesize a primer formula. It's easy enough to cast lead bullets but creating the brass cartridges and the primer formula is a different story...

@@AnthonyTrifoglioI’m interested in a way to make the equipment that would allow individuals to make primers at home. I’ve been researching formulas for primer compounds and trying to design a device for single stage reloading presses that would blank and draw the primer cups and make the anvils. That part is the easy part. My degree in engineering will take me that far but then I would need a chemist to synthesize a proper formula that is safe to handle and as reliable as factory primer formula. I think being able to produce your own primers at home would be great from a self reliance standpoint and it could also fill a gap in the market. Particularly when primers are short in stock.

@@schoof5054 with all the research I've done, (and without re-watching this video, I think this video also shows this) when dry, the primer compound is extremely dangerous, as it'sboth sensitive to percussive force & electrostatic discharge, hence why it's wet when employees handle the primer mixture. Another issue is that some of the raw ingredient chemicals are caustic. Meaning if the at-home primer compound had to be mixed at home. The user should have a fume hood, and CBRN filtered gas mask. That to my knowledge thus far is what makes at-home primer manufacturing basically impossible. I'm no material scientist or chemist either Do you have a snapchat? @@AnthonyTrifoglio Where there is a will there is a way. I think a lot of people get too mixed up with the idea that something is so difficult that it is impossible but I think anything can be done if the correct amount of will is put towards it. In my research I've found that primer mix (At least in the old days) was mixed with a wet material called "Gum Water" sometimes called "Gum Arabic" which is common is food products and an easy ingredient to procure or synthesize if need be. As for the explosive part, if somebody is dedicated enough, a cheap sand blasting cabinet from harbor freight only costs about 150 bucks for a table top model. This could be enough to protect the face, eyes and hands from any reaction that happens. I think enough mix to fill 100 primers maximum could be done safely using this method especially if the correct tools are implemented. The only issue we really have is synthesizing a primer formula that is non corrosive, easy and cheap to load, doesn't contain chemicals that will have you put on a watchlist and can be mixed wet to then dry after loading. I am currently working on designing a set of blanking and cupping dies that can be put into a basic single stage reloading press to draw cartridge brass into primer cups and anvils.

Alternatively one could make a fully automated machine to do the entire process, but it will be a major undertaking. Run by remote control it could also be much safer than having a human have to run it by hand...

Also for anyone smart & brave enough to reuse spent primers with the various compounds that can be used at home, there is a pesky annual ITAR fee of $2500 in the U.S.A. on top of the $10 ATF fee. That fee is simply to manufacture. If you actually intend to export, many more hoops to jump through.

making primers like that on a large scale is so dangerous, I hear some manufacturers actually expect accidents to happen, so they make the facilities modular and completely compartmentalized, and have funds allocated annually to pay for injury or death. This is way most ammo manufacturers don't make primers......honestly I wouldn't ether

It is more that every time a democrat gains power millions of new gun owners are made. Gun ownership did decrease during Trump because no one was scared, but overall it might not have actually decreased since an increasing number of new gun owners are making their guns from kits. Additionally while in the past century most shooting was slow fire target shooting, today most people like rapid firing competitions more than precision rifle and so the consumption of ammo has exponentially risen. The risk is not price gouging or feds buying them up (price gouging only would enable competitors to rise, and the government doesn't want to buy more ammo and inject more money into the gun industry) the risk is mostly environmental regulations used to stealth ban production of ammo by issuing penalties. Many of the corporations that make ammunition's have to tread carefully not just to ensure the logistics of supply and demand are balanced, but also keep ahead of regulatory burdens. So you can't just pop up and build more factories every 4 years, as the design of the factory has to be adaptable enough to not be rendered obsolete from a new regulation.
@shooterqqqq
@shooterqqqq 2 года назад
The price gougers are at the gunshows. They go to gunshops with their entire family to buy everything on the shelves. The manufacturers have been trying to keep the prices down but the new gun owners have tripled. There is NO production rate for the hand crafted primers since the procedure is so dangerous.

What was the first thing The Ukraine asked for from the USA when Putin attacked them. Don't think that Putin won't roll tanks on Europe, so perhaps defenders of freedom would remind and say that Putin is the one killing innocent children, on an industrial scale. ...and yes, no 18 to 21 YO's should have access to any weapons, and we need to license advanced platforms such that only law abiding licensed citizens will be allowed to posses them, thus circumventing the black market, where in fact a prohibited firearm is all of the sudden 4x more price on the black market... So, a criminal, who doesn't obey laws anyway, will end up with a "no license" conviction multiplier, whereas a law abiding citizen will have a license... for a miniscule fee and enhanced BG check . If you want to see how "harsh gun laws work", just look to Mexico. Guns are illegal for citizens, but alas Mexico has 4x the gun homicides of the USA... Mexico, where only the Federales, Military, Police, and Criminals have guns... So, remember this... criminals ignore laws, especially gun laws... they actually prefer banned platforms, as they instantly become 4x more profitable and desirable. Rather than ban, simply license, train, and BG check. Also, most mass shootings are done with a handgun, so it's not the platform per se... Also, we need to look at gun violence on nightly TV, R rated and gratuitous use of gun violence, nightly. Lastly, how does "Call of Duty" fall into the hands of a teenager?

Ammunition manufacturers have two options. Make primers Available to the reloading market, which will eat into their ammo profits. Or they can focus solely on making new cartridges that everyone must buy from them.
