Conclusion
"Propaganda" is a seminal work written by Edward Bernays, Freud's nephew, first published in
1928. Bernays, often referred to as the "father of public relations," presents a comprehensive
analysis of propaganda as a tool for influencing public opinion and shaping societal behavior. The
book's contents can be summarized as follows:
1. Definition and Scope: Bernays defines propaganda broadly as the conscious and intelligent
manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses.
2. Historical Context: The book discusses the emergence of propaganda techniques during
World War I and their subsequent application in peacetime. Bernays emphasizes how the
war demonstrated the power of organized persuasion.
3. Mechanics of Propaganda: Bernays outlines various techniques for influencing public
opinion, including:
• Use of symbols and slogans
• Manipulation of news
• Creation of events to generate publicity
• Utilization of group leaders and opinion makers
4. Psychology of Public Opinion: The book delves into the psychological underpinnings of
mass behavior, discussing concepts like group mentality, stereotypes, and the role of the
unconscious in decision-making. We'll touch upon a few of these on this video.
5. Propaganda in Business: Bernays explores how businesses can use propaganda techniques to
influence consumer behavior and create demand for products.
6. Political Applications: The book examines how propaganda can be used in politics to shape
public perception of candidates and policies.
7. Social Engineering: Bernays presents propaganda as a tool for social engineering, arguing
that it can be used to mold the public's desires and beliefs in ways that benefit society.
8. Ethics and Responsibility: While largely advocating for the use of propaganda, Bernays does
touch on the ethical responsibilities of those who wield these techniques.
9. Case Studies: The book includes various examples and case studies demonstrating the
practical application of propaganda techniques in different fields.
10.Future Outlook: Bernays speculates on the future role of propaganda in society, predicting
its increasing importance in an increasingly complex world.
"Propaganda" is notable for its frank discussion of manipulation techniques and has been both
influential and controversial, shaping the fields of public relations and marketing while also raising
ethical concerns about the nature of mass persuasion in modern societies.
It's important to note that while this book provides valuable historical insight into the
development of propaganda and public relations techniques, many of its ideas and ethical
stances have been critically examined and debated in the decades since its publication.
Psychosocial Dynamics and Epistemic Mechanisms in Propagandistic Discourse
“Men (people) are rarely aware of the real reasons which motivate their actions.”― Edward L. Bernays, Propaganda
Propaganda has existed as long as organized rule has. We have seen in in the Roman era, in WWII
but it is in the age of information that propaganda has reached a new peak, facilitated by social
media, advanced langauge models and algorithms that study your every choise, word. Public
opinion has become a resource harvested to produce power.
Agents of propaganda have tell tales. Ask them a question, they will offer a completely unrelated
answer. They will also respond to a question with another question, to show at a subconcious level
that they are in charge of the information shared, not you.
At its core, propaganda operates by exploiting cognitive biases and emotional triggers.

I think of the manipulation is mostly being done by users of social media. Mainstream media somewhat follows policies of verifying stories. RU-vidrs, posters on Twitter and such, have no such policies or limits. People like to criticize media while creating posts about their own "beliefs" and "opinions" in online echo chambers. Social media is mind poison.

Most* Most people are gullible. The single best weapon you have against it is your emotions. Or more specifically, CONTROLLING your emotions. Be happy. Be sad. Be mad. BUT DO IT IN THE PRIVACY OF YOUR OWN HOME. Feelings make you weak. No, I mean that literally. When you feel emotions you become vulnerable to attack. Even a simple slight lip-smile is enough to disrupt your concentration. And when you throw sadness into the mix, things get REALLY crazy, because that actually cripples your brain, and makes you unable to think rationally. That is the origin of anger, by the way. You cannot be angry without first being sad. Sadness is the trigger for anger. A person becomes sad due to some circumstance. They will do anything to get rid of the sadness. And then, the angry comes out, rid one of the sadness. You can be sad without becoming angry. But you will NEVER be angry without first being sad. But yeah, keep those emotions under control; they are THE gaping hole in your defenses. And this goes for ALL humans, me, you, EVERYONE; no exceptions. There is no such thing as brain that can function optimally on feelings.

No. Propaganda is a blunt weapon, and not even a weapon, more just part of the infrastructure. Any social order must have a STANCE, and propaganda is to align with that stance. The strongest propaganda, on propaganda, is in federal USA because you don't have a rational basis in any national language regulatory body, that could ground your legal framework. Instead it's polled, and enforced by private universities. That's why you "literally"don't even mean literally. Every other nation has an academic langauge regulator, to define what the voters MEAN wen they write up laws. There's a list on wikipedia. An example of your propaganda, is blind faith that constitutional amendments fix problems. 1st amendment for example "fixes" the problem that Adam smith's copyright would force you to say "the big game" instead of trademarked "super bowl". Without a constitution, you'd be ALLOWED to say "super bowl" to begin with. In real economy, you ARE allowed to buy copyright dodging goods through Amazon, because "banning" forced labor was nothing but propaganda. The problem with slavery is that the owner is obligated to look after the slav. In "liberal" ism, you get to evict your slave when his body is broken, or the nation of slavs doens't produce enough energy through Ukraine.

I love seeing all the people in the comments acting as if only weak minded people are subject to propaganda. I fancy myself a critical thinker, but even I have caught myself falling for less overt propaganda, and even occasionally overt stuff too. A good example is those shorts the military puts out, either through official channels or channels that are obviously ran/paid for by the military, where they put dramatic background music on top of edited footage of soldiers in action. At first when you see it, there’s that instinctive “that’s kinda cool” feeling, but I always catch myself and remember that no, it isn’t cool at all. Nothing cool about killing for bankers. My point stands, nobody, and I mean nobody, is impervious to propaganda. We are all probably influenced by things every day that we don’t even recognize as propaganda, but they are. It’s been pretty well proven that *all* people are vulnerable to propaganda on some level.

Hi, PhD tht studies disinformation and information operations here, video quite well done! Just one note, I would have also described the change in meaning of propaganda over time. The definition you give at the beginning (from Propaganda and Persuasion of Jowett and O'Donnell I guess) is neutral, as they basically equate propaganda and persuasion, and you can have white, grey, and black propaganda. But the word for most after WWI refers only to black (and partially gray) propganda, and you also do that in the video, you just highlight the "dark" side of propaganda. The word now usually does not include the completely valid action of governments like anti-smoking campaigns (a perfect example of white propaganda), but the definition you are using do, so there's a bit of disconnect between that and the presentation.

I don't think it has spiked this days. In my opinion, what happens is that now we have decentralized information due to the social media, for good or for worse, but it means that our minds are no longer in the hands of just half a dozen of TV channels. This has created a phenomenon of creation of several "specialized" bubbles of political ideas. Take music for example. If you type in "Danish jazz", you'll find it on RU-vid. There's a niche for anything you could possibly think of. Likewise, the same is happening with politics. I myself am an Anarchocapitalist, something that would be so small that you would only ever find at the attic of an University. Nowadays, I'm in contact with several individuals with likewise minds. This was something that came as a staggering blow to the stablished Mass Media. And they panicked. And in their panick, they amped the rethoric 10 fold, in a feeble attempt to regain control of the narrative, but that only hastened their downfall. That's why it seems that it is so much worse today, but in fact, it was worse BEFORE, because you were chained to single narrative that would go uncontested.

Exactly. It's weird for Metatron, whose own channel only exists due to social media and who has critiqued Establishment narratives in his vids would promote the idea that social media has exacerbated malign 'propaganda'. It adds to the general impression I get from much of this vid that he's taken a lot of it from elsewhere and hasn't considered it very carefully.

Maybe I am full of myself here, yet in some videos of Metatron I asked for an explanation of maeutics and eristics as rhetorical approaches to showcase the amount of people rather wanting a narrative to win (eristics), than upholding the truth (maeutics). If (and also if not; maybe its a coincidence) this is what made you and your team produce this video, then thank you. I am often shocked how few people know about Bernais. Although it is not exactly what I wished for, it certainly is helpful. Especially the naming of certain methods and by doing so giving people the means to detect them and calling them out.

The worst kind of propaganda is one that relies heavily on true statements. Just because someone said a bunch of true things does not mean that everything they say is true. Specifically watch out for when they jump the is/ought gap and start talking about the future, about what you should do! On the other hand, just because someone is a propagandist does not mean that the opposite of what they say is true- this is the "argument from fallacy" aka the "fallacy fallacy".

I find it very difficult to make out the line between what is propaganda and what is simply commen group dynamics. As many evolutionary psychologists has pointet out, adherrence to the group and pressure from the gruop to make people fall in line (pressure here is not only the use of force or threat of force, but also social binding, making people feel like a part of the group and so on) is a very basic, if not THE basic, way of social animals, especially humans. If this social cohesion did not exists, everything in the social world would be chaos. Of course, propaganda play on this very part of our nature. But when exactly the shift happens, for it to be propaganda instead of a part of commen group dynamics. That is, I think a very difficult question.

Immediately recognized the Edward Bernays quote in the beginning. Once you read Propaganda and Crystallizing Public Opinion, it’s hard to not be cynical watching ads. But one must be careful- the propaganda is literally all around and one starts to feel paranoid as if some outside force is always trying to control them.

The most important thing to learn is How to think. Awareness of our emotions and biases and how they filter ANY information we receive in order to build up how and what we know what we know. People need training on logic, and then how logic has pitfalls. People need training in why anything is real or why we should believe in anything at all. Finally, we need to accept that you or anyone else can devote all resources and efforts to come to the most well though out and unbiased conclusion only to find out they are still different.... There is a reason almost every supreme court case goes to split decisions and it isnt that these are easily gullible minds untrained in how to think. Its that humans are complex beyond our understanding or maybe despite our understanding we still lose out to forces that go beyond a simple just let me hear the facts and ill make a sound decision all the time. Propaganda is just the training on manipulating that space with how you present information. Psychology and marketing and politics all converging to hijack an otherwise rational and calm mind.

I have studied propaganda, physical/ mental influence and subliminal messaging for much of my life. An excellent essay. I would have liked if you had provided examples specific mechanisms. Such as how colors or background music create a mood and unconsciously set the beginning of a narrative. Red and yellow can induce a sense of hunger. (McDonald's, Wendy's, ect) A dark or tense music when referring to the opposition. An inspiring, light or uplifting music when expressing that enities desires or policies.(Political Ads, TV commercials, Reality shows.) Excellent work on acknowledging mirror neurons. How we share empathy for others suffering. Think of the poor animals you can save for only $1a month. I love your work. God Bless.

Bernay's definition of 'propaganda' includes abstract factors which are difficult to prove in practice. And it does not add to the importance of debate. Propaganda [A practical definition] : Opinion expressed in the form of a monologue, regardless of its truth or accuracy. News [A practical definition] : The reporting of events without opinion. "If you want the news, watch the news. If you want an opinion, watch a debate." Define propaganda correctly so that we can bring back debate!

The true spirit of "Freedom of Speech" is: you get to say something back. When you and I are talking on the street, both of us can respond to one another. But... When I pick up a megaphone, my voice is drowning yours. When I broadcast my opinion on the radio or television without an opponent, no one can speak back. That is propaganda; opinion outside of dialogue.

A wise man is not ideologically tribal. Tribalism is what he uses to achieve his goals as most people do not WANT to think, they want to be told. It's easier. It allows hierarchy, it provides protection, social assurance and comfort. Ideology is what other people call the sum of the actions of leadership when distilled in philosophy through hindsight. Morality is not - largely - defined through this, as can is seen when manifest through the laws that regulate the actions of executive powers. If you want to know more, I strongly recommend you read Machievelli's "The Prince". It is not telling people that a moral and just person should adhere to the mechanisms described within its pages, Machievelli certainly did not. It is designed to provide an OPTION for use cases - much as a WMD is a use case. Also like a WMD it tends towards mutually assured destruction as it is largely an unsustainable approach unless you can rework your ethics and have no heed of morality.
