The big issue is that it was: At the production level. What you are seeing is an industry (well, multiple industries if you include non-video type games) that was founded by passionate people gain steam, and then turn into every other industry where it became about who you know over what you do. That was why journos and the main "indie dev scene" were so adamantly convinced that gamers were lying about caring about "ethlcs in gaming", because their entire professions at the time were about making the right contacts to get scoops or get games noticed. It was a normal, accepted thing to them and they saw it as these gamers using it as a cover for their real intentions. They at best did not realize how gamers saw the hobby as an escape FROM those more-normal forms of social stratification, and at worst saw it as an attack on their own business models. Frankly there was nothing that could have been done by gamers because this all started over 20 years ago when gaming began to get big. It can only be a lesson moving forwards as parallel gaming industries form.

I like the historical periods and maps but I hate the gameplay, for many of tve I only bought the whole Assassins Creed series for myself because it was on 80% or 90% sale. even then I enjoyed AC2, AC Brotherhood, AC Revelations and AC black flag the most. modern games aren't that good. though Origins was quite good.

Years and years of government corruption and controversial policies created an environment that is extremely polarizing. I work in AAA video games, also motion pictures, and know if their inner workings. Can confirm nearly all of your talking points. I always play an agreeable character to keep my job. The intensity of the propagandizing, soap box champagne marxists, shoulder pat virtue signaling and grand moralizing from my own ranks has been suffocating. If they don't think you're one of them, the ostracization can be a scarlet letter moment. I worked over a decade to get I to where am because I grew up in the golden age of film and games and wanted to be a part of it. It breaks my heart but I am now considering other career avenues which allow me to work alone and/or produce my own content due to the current fall of feature films, tv series and video games. The left just despise those of "lighter" persuasion or those "well-off" in civil society, regardless. The whole "equality" thing is just window dressing. They don't believe it, because if they did, they'd apply their "beliefs" and professed hatred of inequity universally, which they don't. (Example: the cognitive dissonance regarding "Islam is Right About Women") Neither believes that gaining power to look out for your own people is bad, so you framing it under this premise to give some air of being an enlightened centrist comes off as disingenuous.

So for me the main difference between the right and the left is that the left always promotes itself because they always believe they are correct, while the right is focusing on the actual business and what is good for it. I worked for a few years as a manager and this was something that i saw but at the time didnt understand. The left always promoted people who agreed with themsemelvs, while the people on the right promoted people who wanted to work Now i was the one deciding at the time as i was a hiring manager, the worst part is i never understood this happening. At first no complaints from workers but as i hired more and more people i ended up with more and more left thinking people. At first no complaints at all, then what slowly emerged was complaints about right wingers, each and every time this and that right winger was bad, never because of politics but because he acted weirdly together with women his own age, he tried to grab my breasts, he tried to kiss me, he inivted me into his fapartment or "fun", i dont feel safe around him, he raised his voice against me, etc etc etc. But now in retrospect, it was always the left against the right, they accused the right with everything they could as soon as they were "in power".

There also grifters who are true believers in the sense of getting paid for their activism, they would probably do for free anyway. There is nothing better for an activist, than being paid for you activism.
I think I get what you mean. But at first, it intially sounds like just the act of getting profits from a belief/activist activity would qualify said person as a grifter. Which would broaden meaning of the word to uselessness without additional qualifiers. Also the concept of a "True believer grifter" sound like an oxymoron. Similar to the term "married batcholet" but hey it wouldn't be the first time an oxymoron accurately describe something. So if you have an example please share.
@@RyanGoosing You're probably right. It would not make sense to use term true believer grifter. Maybe professional activist/propagandist are better. They're the most accurate but a bit long and not snappy. I was also thinking huckster or snake oil salesman, but might as well keep using grifter. Though huckster is slightly better it's not worth changing for only slightly. woke priests in that they collect a tithe. Commissar is an option. Point is they do largely believe in what they're selling. Plus they don't have principles, it's just power games. How they get that power is not much of a concern, as long as it is effective. Being paid means they can put all their energy into their activism, is probably their thought. Fortunately for us they're really *really* bad at judging these things and it is already backfiring for them. and there are people actually caught for illegal fraud using these same talking points. a former facebook employee took a lot of money and of course the BLM mansions.
@@TheLastSoundNL I think most of these falls in line with the term hypocrite. It fairly easy to find people who believe X but does Y. That or simply cases of horse shoe theory. Where someone tries so hard to not be Y that they end up being Y. The most popular example being people who try to be so anti-racist that they themselves become racist. Like DEI or those anti white people. Then you got people who self project onto other people. Which isn't always hypocritical(but often is). But I think this fall out of line of of true believer/grifter. In any case I'd avoid calling someone who actually believe what they are preaching a grifter. There's plenty of other terms and/or insults we can use instead that can accurately describes these person mindset/actions is. Also I gotta look up some of these words you brought up but later. Got some irl stuff to do.

The old magazines werent as honest as we'd like to think. Back then they talked only about games, thats true. But they sold covers and pages to games companies and copies or presentation always went hand in hand with an explanation as to how the game had to presented by the journo(I personally knew a journo who gave me quite a bit of off the record info). Not doing so would result in not getting access. They did from time to time put a bad game on a pedestal to pretend they were honest. The general population found out when when paper magazines were gone and people rubbing eachothers bad got worse and was more and more exposed online. The failure of the gaming community to abandon those journo's and the media all building a fort of lies to hide within(GG 2014) is where the political nonsense got a free hand. They are slowly going down, but the rot has reached the games companies through the consultants. It will take years to get that out again.
I mean, _yeah_ but at the same time, you knew the mags published by the Big Three (Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony) were going to give you spin based on who paid the rent, and as someone who grew up reading _Nintendo Power_ its writers at least had a _lot_ of fun with the community. I miss those days. i miss when gamers were fun to be around.
As a German speaker i have to say we still actually got a gaming well more nerd culture in general magazine that doesn't talk about politics and still does peaty good articles it is called the Gamestar. They started out as a gaming magazine but they also do tabletop RPGs and general hardware reviews if I need a new mouse I go check out their reviews.

Old video game journalism was made by people who cared about video games. They're journalists secondarily, at best. You can see that in the un-serious, casual nature of a lot of old reviews. Some articles feel like some guys were shooting the bull after a couple beers, then distilled that conversation down into a review. They answered "how can I get paid to play video games" with "I guess I'll become a games journo" Modern video game journalism is the pity job for bad to mid journos who couldn't get an Important job, so have fallen down the rungs to this. They don't care about video games. They want to be Important Journalists, and making political statements instead of talking about video games is their attempt to cosplay at being Important. They answered "how can I become a journo as a D student" with "I guess video games is easy".
I dont get why people want to become journalists to make political statements. If you want to do that, then join a political party. Journalists are supposed to report on things, not insert their own opinions. Thats why newspapers have column and opinion sections, and the interesting articles in those are usually not written by journalists, but by people with other jobs who also write for the newspaper occasionally
I have a late '90s magazine mostly about PS 1 titles. One of the articles is an in-depth retelling of a gaming party the redactors and writers of said magazine organized for their fans, strippers included, with blurred screenshots. Imagine that in today's media.
I still remember an article, I think it was in Polygon, about a guy that went to a Rock Band 4 preview event in which he spends the entire piece complaining about how he would rather be discussing the politics of the Philippines.
