What are you comparing them to centuries ago, Beethoven? Metal has existed for far less than a century, so shouldn't you wait another 50 years or so before you declare the band of the century? The secret sauce to their success is all in the presentation. The live shows and the music videos are what sells this band. Videos when done well, can break through language barriers better that any other way. That's how they have been able to keep singing in their native tongue and do well abroad for so long. Their music videos are incredible works of art themselves and can give the viewers ideas of the meanings behind their songs.

Yeah, just like he said at the end of the video, Rammstein are one of the few contemporary bands that has realized that it's not just about the music and that if you want to make it big, you have to evolve into more than just a band, you have to develop into a whole piece of art, and that's what they did and what they are incredibly good at. Their special, unique musical and visual style and the show they put on are just perfect in every way. There are only few actual bands that are so good at doing that, the only other ones that come close are Slipknot and Lordi.

Just a tiny little correction. Their debut wasn't an immediate success in Germany. It actually debuted at #99 in the charts and it took almost 2 years until it reached top 10. By that point Engel and Du Hast started to get extremely popular which boosted the sales of their previous album. And the #2 peak actually happened in 2020 when it was re-released.

For me the biggest part of rammstein and their almost random popularity comes from the glorious catchiness of everything. Riffs riffs riffs! It's almost always super catchy, between the keyboard and the guitars, the four to the floor smack you in the face drums and the deep, beautiful vocals that come across poetic and anthemic on top of that. They're hard to not love, they know what they're doing as musicians, they know how to catch your ear and your attention.

People still have negative feelings about Germans and Germany. They repeat the idea that German is an ugly language ad nauseum without having a clue. Rammstein don't use German to make German or themselves sound cool. Their lyrics are simply aimed at a German audience. Many bands sing in German. Rammstein just happens to be popular abroad as well. I guess they are the most internationally famous German singing band of all time.
@torstenscholz6243
@torstenscholz6243 Год назад
@@gulliverthegullible6667 Yeah, they sing german because it's their mother tongue and when they started, they probably never thought they'd become that big, especially outside of the German-speaking world. Bun then again, it was still kinda daring for them to sing in German as in the 90s, there was not much German-speaking pop and rock music around here in Germany. Most German bands tried to copy American and British bands and sang in English, so aside from a few older acts that somehow had always been there (Die Ärzte, Die Toten Hosen, Böhse Onkelz, Herbert Grönemeyer, Udo Lindenberg) German-language rock and pop was hardly popular in the mainstream even in German-sepaking countries.

Good summary! Another aspect which makes Rammstein so unique: the lyrics. Like his father, Till is a professional poet and published several poem books. Many Rammstein songs are sung poems, a typical example is "Nebel" (Fog). Till uses many out-dated or poetic words, unknown even for German native speakers, lots of references to German literature (e.g. Goethe), fairy tales, but also modern classic music (e.g. Edith Piaf). Typical are many, many ambigue words which need to be interpreted, classical tools of poetry, etc. The poem (song lyrics) "Nebel" e.g. is so good that it is used in classes about German poetry in some German schools. Maybe, Rammstein lyrics are the most intelligent in nowadays metal music.
@joppek77
@joppek77 3 месяца назад
Agree! Not sure I can fully appreciate the nuances since I'm not a native speaker but I'm convinced it has helped their success. I would wager that it have boosted the interest in the German language and it gives a deeper meaning to the music when you can ponder the meaning of the lyrics and perhaps find your own interpretation. I mean, _I love you babe! Yeah Yeah Yea!!_ doesn't leave much for the imagination...
@bernardoesperanto3194
@bernardoesperanto3194 3 месяца назад
@@joppek77 -- 😇😍 I like your example "I love you babe! Yeah Yeah Yeah!!". You are so right. Let's have a quick view at "Frühling in Paris" (Spring in Paris). The (probably autobiographic song) is about a young man who looses his virginity with a prostitute in Paris. See the English lyrics here: -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1wHYlI9tosU.html I mark the unusual, poetic words with *. Frühling in Paris Im Lichtkleid* kam sie auf mich zu ich weiß es noch wie heut' Ich war so jung --- -- I never heard this word in any other context, but it's easy to understand, it's just a compound auf the very basic words Licht + Kleid. It fits the context with Frühling / Licht / Kleid (so not dark winter coat) and Paris, "the city of light" (if you didn't do so far, try to visit Paris in spring, it has a unique light like a pastel painting, which you will never forget). -- In German it's normal to use compound words like Licht/kleid. The English translation has "a dress made of light", which imo is less strong because of the "super-fluent" "made of". Is the translation correct? Lichtkleid is so seldom, that it has no fixed meaning. Maybe it's better to translate with "a dress shining / bright as light", "a dress reflecting the light", etc. A well known problem when translating from the very concise, laconic German to English. -- Frühling is related to jung (young), the year and the protagonist just awakened from winter and childhood and are still young. Both words bracket the title and the first three lines. -- The title reminds of the play Frühlings Erwachen (Spring Awakening, 1891) by Frank Wedekind. See Wikipedia: "The play criticises perceived problems in the sexually oppressive culture of nineteenth century (Fin de siècle) Germany and offers a vivid dramatisation of the erotic fantasies that can breed in such an environment." About Till's erotic fantasies as a 15 y. old swimmer is the song "Feuer und Wasser" (Wenn sie brustschwimmt ist das schön, // dann kann ich in ihr Zentrum sehen.). He dreams about having sex with his swim mate, but is too shy, too awkward to approach her. Only a few years later, in Paris, he will have his sexual awakening, and then not with a girl of the national swim team, but with a prostitute. --- hab mich geniert doch hab' es nie bereut. I'll continue in a new comment.
@bernardoesperanto3194
@bernardoesperanto3194 3 месяца назад
bernardo -- 2nd part Sie rief mir Worte ins Gesicht* die Zunge lustgesträubt* --- -- every day German "Sie rief mir Worte entgegen / zu", "Sie sprach mich an". -- "lust/gesträubt": Never heard this compound word in another context. Maybe only because of the rhyme "gesträubt / bereut". -- the rhyme is simpel as the words: AB-AB --- Verstand nur ihre Sprache nicht; ich hab' es nicht bereut. Oh non, rien de rien Oh non je ne regrette rien -- These two lines in French are a quotation of the chorus and the title of one of the most famous songs (1960) by the well known French singer Edith Piaf (1915-1963, s. Wikipedia) who had to live for a certain time in a brothel being too poor. --- Wenn ich ihre Haut verließ* - der Frühling blutet* in Paris. --- The combination of Haut + verlassen is unusual. Maybe poetic language, maybe due to the rhyme (Paris / verließ), maybe both? "der Frühling blutet" very unusual combination and I heard it in no other context. I skip a few lines and to end just want to draw your attention to the following --- Ein Flüstern fiel mir in den Schoß und führte* feinen* Klang* ... ... --- The whole second line is totally unusual and for me it's not clear what Till wants to say (brought / made a nice / sophisticated / pleasant sound ?). Maybe due to the double alliteration Flüstern fiel // führte feinen? --- Sie rief mir Worte ins Gesicht (see above) und hat sich tief verbeugt --- Due to the combination of Schoß and verbeugt (lap and bowed), it becomes clear that Till describes a sexual activity here, probably oral sex (?). ---- The rest I leave for your interpretation. Again, you are right. A bit more artistic and poetic as "I love you babe! Yeah Yeah Yeah!! 😂

I'd like to add another point to their path to success: Their lyrics are one of a kind! Most of it unfortunately gets lost in the English translation, but the lyrics all have at least two or three possible meanings and opens them up to several different interpretations, which are never confirmed by the band. Due to that the songs have a huge impact on many different people in different stages of their life. And the lyrics are also extremly poetic and influenced by the biggest German poets. Till (who is mainly responsable for the lyrics) has been writing poetry for many, many years and also published a book. I've been listening to them for years and everytime I listen to a song I find a new meaning, a new phrase which sparks my interest. They are in my opinion just superior to any other metal band in existence right now

Sonne taught me to count in German haha, and I know the lyrics to Rosenrot by heart. I hope to see them live one day!

I love the way Till tells stories. Rhetorically his lyrics have so much nuances. The way they play with "so it seems" opposits. Within the text is genius. I love it when song's have this little secret's that you find bit by bit if you listen to them. Same for the Music Video. Yes they look cool. But often when you don't look close enough you don't understand the message. I would be able to translate any song of them. But due to the fact that they refere to the German culture and the structual gaps which are especially in the german Language. (In some songs not in all.) Part of the genius behind it might disapear.

Til really is an underrated lyrical genius. On the surface their lyrics look simple and provocative, but if you look closer, you realize how clever and deep they actually are and how great they are at mixing storytelling, provocation, humor and irony into something that sounds almost poetic. This is art.

It’s honestly amazing that a lot of the simple explanations as to why the band is what they are gets exaggerated due to the fact that they are German. As a native german speaker, I have a few things to add that I haven't seen in the comments yet: First: your pronounciation is pretty ok for someone who probably has never tried speaking german ;) -Till's way of rolling the R is pretty over the top, even for german standards and makes the band stand out even from other german bands. -Some of the songs and lyrics are very much inspired by old german poets. Example: the lyrics of "Haifisch" is pretty much a homage to Bertholt Brecht's "Drei Groschen Oper", where they sing "Und der Haifisch, der Hat Zähne und die trägt er im Gesicht" where Rammstein slightly changed the lyrics to get a very similar rhyme. Same goes for "Rosenrot", which is very close to Goethe's "Röslein auf der Heide" where the original Poem goes: "Sah ein Bub ein Röslein stehn, Röslein auf der Heide" Also: I think the clichee of americans thinking German sounds angry/rough comes from Rammstein, because german can sound very soft spoken when you hear a regular person speaking :)

This video makes it look like some random guys with little music experience just came together to play some music. Till's previous band was pretty unknown, but otherwise Rammstein was kinda like an East German alternative music supergroup. Paul Landers and Flake were 2/3 of the band "Feeling B" that started in the mid 80s as a "punk band", with a quirky twist that can be heard today in Rammstein's music. Christoph Schneider joined them in 1991. His other band was "Die Firma", which had other future Rammstein members in it. Bassist Oliver Riedel previously played in the folk rock band "Inchtabokatables", which had a popular debut album in 1991. Their music also had weird lyrics. All those bands were well known in the East German alternative music scene in the late 80s and early 90s. The only unknown (to me) band was "First Arsch" (NOT "fist"). Listen to the albums "Hea Hoa Hoa Hea Hea Hoa" by Feeling B and "Inchtomanie" by The Inchtabokatables on streaming services (or RU-vid) and you'll see it all makes sense. Their previous music didn't fit into a mold.

I didn't grow up with Metal, or speaking German. But man, their appeal is undeniable. Such a talented group, from many, many angles. At the base level, the music kicks ass. And then the music videos kick ass. And then the lyrics unpack and translate to deeper excellence. And then they go live and blow all our expectations out of the water with up to and including rocket launchers into the crowd (well, what looked like rockets!). Truly hard to overstate how impressive they are. No, not everyone's cup of tea, and not every track is a banger... but in this day an age its an incredible feat to entertain so many, so often, while also having some worthwhile messages in the content. Fantastic stuff, Rammstein. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do. It's been a joy watching and listening.
