How Randy Moss fell short of a Super Bowl despite being one of the greatest of all time

Plenty of athletes have proclaimed themselves to be “the greatest,” but few have the individual accolades to back it up like Randy Moss. He led the league in receiving touchdowns five times, set a record for that same stat in his age-30 season, and twice was the focal point of historically dominant offenses. And still, no team featuring the Freak managed to win the Super Bowl. Why?
You might remember a missed field goal from his rookie year being the reason, but that was far from the only chance to put it away. You might remember David Tyree’s helmet catch, but that’s not the only reason the Patriot’s pursuit for perfection was derailed. I didn’t even remember that in the final game of his career, Moss had another chance to go out on top.
How could one career have so much heartbreak to go along with so many achievements? Why did Randy Moss, one of the greatest athletes to ever play in the NFL, finish his career empty-handed?

Randy, if you're reading this, please focus on this being a celebration of your achievements that looks to answer how things went down and not just a video that's like...dunking on you. Should've seen him in 98. League had never seen a talent like that. Calvin Johnson was the closest later, he was a bit more physical but he didn't have the speed and smoothness of Moss. Moss would sometimes be used as a decoy and just run straight upfield and you'd have 3 guys collapsing in his direction. No player has ever stretched a defense like Moss. A single WR who breaks the defense before the snap and wasn't even an option on the play.

Another recent tidbit; on Russell Wilson's latest podcast, Moss recounted how John Schneider tried to recruit him to the Seahawks' 2013 championship winning team when Harvin went down. He refused because he didn't feel like he was in the right physical condition, and he wasn't ring chasing. He was probably right, but still crazy to imagine what could have been.

That's true, and Moss was taken out of context for much of his career to force that "lazy" narrative by actually lazy sportswriters. But it doesn't matter what his intent was - in the video, they're using it to illustrate how he was seen. Also, Moss did do the things people criticized him for - leaving a game early, walking off the line if he wasn't the target, etc. He's probably the greatest WR of all time, but he was inarguably inconsistent.

Moss ran more deep routes then anyone else on the team per game. He used up more energy then any other wr so he was asked to go 75% on some plays. That was stated by Chris Carter. Now if you want to bring up his Oakland Raider days then I suggest you watch the entire team. They all took plays off and put little effort in. Brady and Culpepper praised Moss for his efforts. The 2010 team is probably their 5th best team, and the 2011 team that made the Super Bowl is not even top 10. The 2009 and 2012 teams are bottom 5 teams of the Brady era, with the 2009 team being the absolute worst. The 2009 Patriots almost made Belichick up and leave, that’s how frustrated he was. He admitted to Tom midway through the season “I just can’t get these guys to play the way I need them to play”. @Harry Engel Plus, what's usually forgotten about that 1998 Vikings team was that while their offense was historic in terms of its production, it's defense was maybe average at best at least in terms of points allowed, sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles, etc. Now, if everyone on that defense played up to their potential, I'd rate them perhaps higher as above-average, but by the time of Atl NFCCG, quite a few key defensive stars were injured or weren't 100% prepared and I think also maybe Vikings underestimated Falcons as a team, and I believe Dan Reeves out-coached Green when it came to the intangibles(preparation, focus, determination), in the week leading up to the game and during the game. Dan Reeves is a forgotten HOF-caliber HC who won 2 SB's as a Cowboys asst in the 70s and took Broncos to 3 SB appearances with Elway at the helm. Reeves was certainly capable of out-coaching better, more talented teams in big games. He did 3 times to Browns in the 1980's, winning the AFC Championship Game. He's not or wasn't Bill Belichick or Bill Parcells in his prime, but he could outsmart teams who's HC's had a tendency to make mental errors or make mistakes in-games by being too aggressive, or too greedy, like Green's 98 Vikings. The 2000 Vikings had a good team, but as great as Culpeppers rookie season was, man it is a lot to ask of a rookie QB to win a SB in such a hostile, nasty environment like New York. That 2000 Giants team was a lot better in terms of quality talent then how some experts, writers, and historians have described them as: They had two future HOF's, a QB who found his life and purpose restored again once he quit alcohol for good and ended up having a pretty damn good career, Tiki Barber would be a HOF RB if he retires 2-3 years later then he did prematurely, Jim Fassel hurt the Giants chances more than anyone else because he and his staff micro-managed their team's offensive philosophy going into SB XXXV, this fact has been reported and verified by numerous Giants players, former assistants on Fassel's staff in 2000, as well as by credible Giants beat reporters and columnists. My basic point is: the 2000 Vikings squad didn't lose to some lucky, one-year wonder pushover team that quickly folded up and never emerged again as a contender again like the 2008 Arizona Cardinals or the 2015 Carolina Panthers. Vikings really didn't have another legitimate SB shot until 2009 Favre-led team lost to my Saints in another brutal, closely-contested game. Whenever My Saints play the Vikings, whether it's regular season or postseason, you either get a shootout, a long, painful, brutal OT game that feels like it's lasted 5 hours, or some marathon, heart-stopping contest where the game ends on some miraculous, memorable play like in 2017 with Stefon Diggs making that classic 69-yard TD game that won the game, 29-24, in what's been labeled as the Minneapolis Miracle. Very rarely does a Saints/Viking game turn out to be boring, or a one-sided blowout.

he looked up and saw the 9&7 Giants and thought a super bowl was finally going to happen for him, so did everyone but the Giants. remember, the Giants played them late in the regular season, played well but couldn't contain them. they were fortunate to have that experience, they used what they learned in that game to devise a good enough game plan for the bowl. that crazy play late in the game wouldn't have mattered if they weren't close enough by playing good defense. I'm a 49er fan and when I heard that we are going to sign Randy Moss even after he retired for one year we were all excited... Even though he was past his prime.. we know that he still can make a difference and if you look at his numbers caught 28 for 434 yards with 3 touchdowns.. but his presence on the football field was a huge difference because a lot of defenders focused on him allowing other receivers to get open... At that time the 49ers had tried to receiver Michael Crabtree... With Randy Moss on the other side Michael Crabtree caught 85 catches for 1100 yards with 9 TDs... That was Michael crabtree's best season when it came to numbers.. Randy Moss didn't need the cash a lot of balls or even be target a lot to make a huge difference which he did with his San Francisco 49ers when they made that super bowl appearance... Now of course I won't text Israel doing super bowl every year but that particular year I really want him to win because Frank Gore Alex Smith and Vernon Davis as well as for Patrick Willis before Jim Harbaugh came to this San Francisco 49ers back in 2011 they played in really horrible awful teams with the San Francisco 49ers but they never quit and they always kept playing hard but when Randy Moss got there nobody deserves a ring more than he did and has a football fan my heart was broken when we lost to the Baltimore Ravens.... Many Moss in my opinion is the greatest deep threat receiver of all time.. And he deserves a super Mario ring my Dan Marino and Barry Sanders as well as the entire Buffalo bills between 1990 to 1994

Thats post hoc horse manure. He smoke pot, BIG DEAL. Kids every day in the country smoke pot. The "domestic violence" charge got dropped (turns out she was lying). He made a few minor mistakes, certainly nothing as bad as TWO DUIS (Baker Mayfield, Mac Jones). Moss went to MARSHALL and caught a TD every single game he played there (an NCAA record that will probably never be broken). Moss would've been great ANYWHERE he went. Brady falling to 199 fueled him, as did Aaron Rodgers falling in the draft fueled him too. Moss was fueled by falling but he would've been super freakish anywhere because his football IQ (according to Bill Belichick Moss is the smartest receiver he's ever met) was off the charts.

I love how you put together the story Will! As an LA Rams fan I avidly started following the NFL around 2015-16 so I began researching about the history of the league and one of the first things that came to my mind were the 2007 New England Patriots and Super Bowl 42 that got them 18-1. I was watching a clip from SB42 of Brady giving Moss the TD pass towards the end of the game and that was when I first heard of Randy Moss. I later learned that he was also part of the 2012 San Francisco 49ers that lost in Super Bowl 47. From then on I overlooked everything great about who he was and made fun of him for being a 2x Super Bowl loser until I recently found and watched videos of Thanksgiving games of Vikings vs. Cowboys. That was when I realized how great Moss was! He was literally a TD machine and he was quick that he was always there for his QB for every TD pass no matter the defense and his coach had so many amazing things to say about him! His production on the Vikings offense made the Cowboys regret passing him on in the draft! Randy Moss is so unlucky and it's a pity he has 0 SB rings! He was part of a team that won every single regular season and postseason game but the Super Bowl in 2007 and also part of the 49ers team that lost in the SB for the first time in history! My best friend who's a 49ers fan thought that Super Bowl was rigged because of a no flag call at the end! Not just for those SBs but I also realized from this video the curse started for him since his rookie year when him and his Vikings blew that 1998 NFC Championship game to the Falcons!
