This guy is such a hard worker. I hope an employer who can use an employee with that kind of dedication and perseverance sees this story and gives this guy a chance at a better paying job. If he's willing to work this hard for $15, imagine how he'd apply himself for $50. Seems like a win-win proposition. Wish him, his partner, and their dog all the best.

Just got to point out the obvious. They won't hire homeless due to the company image. So without a shower, it is impossible. Been there. I got off the streets recycling scrap and no kidding the prices dropped so hard I was super thankful for the shower. I'm talking .11 a pound to .02. Thats like 200 a week to nothing... They don't want people to do well, or they wouldn't have their little system of super cheap workers...

Tina Walton I actually am not. Spent the last 7 years hanging on check to check. I face going back to being homeless a second time in my life, next month. And welfare is denying me without a reason. So yeah, the struggle is real.

Got no problem with a homeless guy making money off bottles and cans. They got live too. I'm always giving can to people that ain't got anything. Usually if there down on luck they well take them. Had one guy come back thank me for giving him 20 dollars in can one day

I live in LA, and stopped recycling my cans and bottles. I dump them in the public areas, like the trash outside the grocery store. The cans are ALWAYS picked up by someone who can benefit from them. We should rather thank them for reducing the environmental burden that not recycling can cause. Help a neighbor in creative ways!

It is not illegal to rummage through litter bins. Because if it is in the landfill collection it is considered abandoned property. But if it is in a recycling bin recycling dumpster, then it is property of the trash company. Who ever it was who told you it is illegal to rummage through litter bins doesn't know what they are talking about.

I raid street bins daily for deposit containers. I am not in the States, but no one has ever told me that it is illegal, where I am, outside of the USA. The word I have, strictly unofficial, is that the local municipality, and the given collection contractor[s], won't whizz on the recycling aspect of it. .Once or twice I've crossed paths with the collection contractors, and they're a bit queezy me raiding the back of their compactor, but otherwise in no way pissed with me raiding ' their ' bins. One of them even gave me a generic bin key, on the wink-wink basis, but which I never need coz I've got the knack to unlocking and locking the bins.

In some states like New york and Cali they will pay you for plastic bottles but the majority of the U.S. doesn't even take them but they do take cans in the other states, the way so many plastic bottles end up in our environment and in rivers I wish someone would make a law that not more than 25% of drinks can be put in plastic bottles and the other 75% would be aluminum because the cans are way more likely to be recycled....And in addition to that way more states should start doing the deposit thing like Michigan and New York does....just my thoughts...

While reporting on this story in both New York and Los Angeles, we noticed that for many people living on the streets, collecting and redeeming recyclables is the go-to method of earning some cash. Have you ever thought about making money from your recyclable bottles and cans?

Not homeless but damn close. Recycling is a god send. The only way I have kept my car with some gas to keep going to work. I average some crappy numbers so I only do it for gas now. I will make $2.50 from one bag of plastic. So to be worth it I need at least 4 bags of plastic. Without a spot to stash it, I just say this much, I admire the efforts people put into this.

What happens to these recyclable programs now that China is refusing to take our plastic and other recyclables. How will this affect the fragile homeless economy? Our local Ralph closed down it recycling center a few months ago.
@stevesommer44

Fuck! I could write a book on this subject. Recycling is DEAD! China was a dumping ground for our trash for years. Not anymore. Ca. has never paid the crv amount that are written on the cans. Ever. The U.S is considered to be retarded with it's recycling efforts. Half of what you put in your blue trashcan ends up in the landfill. Recycle places are closing everywhere. I can't find one single place within 50 miles that will pay me to recycle plastic bottles. You can't even give them away.

My advice to you and to your girlfriend or wife get a job make you some money get you a place and you can still do your plastic in your cans recycling on the side like I do and there is nothing wrong of giving people invite that is a pretty good advice to take I'm on a fixed income I live in the apartment I'm having a hard time getting things paid and all that because I do for myself and then on the side I tried to collect can no matter where I go and go from there and I washed them out with warm water and then I smash them and then I get a few bags and then when I got enough back to decide to go ahead and take them to the recycling place I get the money and give a 22 my friend for gas money and that's not a problem they're either so please take my advice if you don't want to take my advice that's okay that's luck to you my friend be safe

What The hell is this? Having a pet isn't cheap. Those cigarettes he's smoking cost $8 a pack. On his budget that will buy two meals--- far more important than the idiocy of smoking cigarettes. I don't believe in addiction. You make a choice to smoke or drink. No one is shoving those cigarettes in his mouth. He is. :( I've got something better he can shove in his mouth and it won''t give him lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, emphysema. :) No poor person should be smoking. Economically it doesn't make sense. And it sure doesn't make sense health wise.

Sorry, I don't get it. Willing to work 10-14 hours a day, but satisfied with $40. Living in a tent, no mention of what wife does, SLOWLY gets around with a dog, one hand on a cart and not riding the bike. Pathetic! Sad, but pathetic! Not a lot of effort going on there, especially between his ears. There are jobs out there that pay considerably more than the less than $5 an hour he is making, even for unskilled workers. There are so many jobs here, people are living in tents too, as housing is a problem, but Wendy's pays $14 with heath benefits after 32 hours and construction workers $50, as I was recently told, as there are not enough workers. Too poor to go anywhere? Sticking out a thumb costs nothing.

@markdaddario1941
@markdaddario1941 6 лет назад
A lot of people are NOT competing for the jobs available here. Businesses are cutting their open hours short, reducing services, not expanding when they want to, because there are not enough workers here. Sometimes you have to move to where the jobs are instead of hoping the jobs will come to where you are. There are plenty of places in the West that are growing and need workers.
@markdaddario1941
@markdaddario1941 6 лет назад
This isn't about superior attitude, this is about the 9 pages of help wanted in our local paper. This is about cities not far from here that are growing and need workers. This is about moving to where the jobs are instead of waiting for jobs to come to you or your area. If you want to eat, and there is a drought, you better move. Just like in American History, when the Dust Bowl happened in the midwest, people moved because there was nothing there for them. If the waters are rising, you move or drown.
