Bethuel Mbugua made headlines back in the late 1980s and 1990s due to his amazing intellect. He joined a school at the age of two and by six years he was already in class six. In 1991 he was able to go to San Francisco to join a school for gifted children. He later joined Macalester University for a Bachelors degree in Biology with a special focus in biochemistry. This was so as he would become a medical doctor in the future but his heart was not in it. He wanted to pursue art. His story is of the dangers of parents putting a lot of pressure on their children and living their own dreams through them.

I got to work with Bethuel again this last February 2019 at the AMREF office. I have known him for years and he gave me an exclusive when the Website for Meet Kenyans was in operation. He is a smart man, humble, friend, a husband and father to a lovely family.

I concur and have learned from Bethuel over the 12 plus years of knowing him. He is an example of telling the world not to put so much pressure on a small child. Children do not know what they want in life at such an early age.

Wow.... very lucky young man that it all went well...I remember this story. He's lucky he survived that pressure. Too much for a young child - it could have messed him up.

not really. It did mess him up. I think he does not even talk to his father now.

interesting story im glad he told it like it is and did not try to give a unreal narrative. Im however disappointed that he did not even acknowledge the lady who used her resources to give him the opportunity to go to America. He has benefited greatly from this woman's kindness . should have acknowledged her

Oh my Lord I remember him, growing up in ol’kalou. He was popular. Ngai I was wondering what happened to him the other day. I am glad he is doing well in Kenya. He was treated like a celebrity and in my opinion it had gone into his head. That was my observation then when I first met him and he was very young probably not more than ten.

This really got me. Such an eye opener. Thank you so much for sharing this story CHAMS Media. I can imagine Bethuel's father simply wanted the absolute best for his son. Mr. Bethuel, your art pieces are beautiful. I hope you still find time to practice it. In case you don't please try find time for it even just as a hobby. In this day and age it's amazing how much can be self taught off the internet. You never know where your art could take you even after you retire. Thank you so much for sharing your story.

If my child can show me that he/she has the ability at age 4 yrs. to see /forecast into the future regarding societal complexities and be more confident that his/her choice will in fact be a better choice for him/her, then I will step out of the picture in that decision making process. Until then, knowing my child's personality and persona and likes and dislikes, sleep times wake times, then and only then will I leave such a delicate decisions to burden the child I love so dearly and who loves me so dearly awaiting and looking for my direction as his/her guidance and sanctions . Should we forget those little eyes peering into ours begging for "daddy's" OK or NOT OK, these little eyes become big hearts and we must be ready to assist with our BIG DADDY'S feelings to help them along and give them that feeling of "AHH I made the right decision" because my Dad also liked it. Peace
