They had a lot of expenses. They also had many legitimate investments. He mentions owning stock in IBM int he 1950's. They gave loans to people they wanted to see succeed and then ... encouraged ppl to patronize those businesses. It's fiction, so it's like anything that any mafioso did, then the Corleones did it.
There is a big difference between gross revenue and net earnings. People typically over estimate how much others are making. If mob bosses had so much money what happened to it, where did it go ?
Yeah, i mean he bails out the Catholic Church THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. I don't really understand the plot of Godfather 3 ( no one does) but that much i did understand
@@burtan2000to understand the plot you need a deep knowledge of the politics and society’s insight, it’s perhaps the darkest period of modern Italian history, dozens of judges killed, political scandals, terrorism, the war against mafia in Sicily, Freemasons involved in every aspect of the economy, which led to outlawing of all secret mason lodges and so on
Everybody always sees the gross income and never thinks about expenses. Remember what Tom Hagen said about a war with the other families? About how those families didn't have the overhead the Corleones had? The money gets spent real quick.
agreed, revenue does not equal profits, at best the don was probably profiting about 10% AT BEST, so 50 million a year in sales equals more like 5 million profit, still very impressive but not the same lol
Well.. That's just the illegal side. That's the side Tom was talking about. That's what the Corleones use to pay everyone, and Genco. The movie doesn't go into it, yet Vito had investments in a few casinos in Vegas, had a few real estate companies, banks, and office buildings. He had a highly diversified portfolio.
That's a great point and all true. However, much of their income covers payoffs and bribes. If you can't make those or the payees and the bribees "run for cover" as Tom put it, then that money will be coming to an end.
@@Ryoats86 That's the wealth which went directly to Don Vito's pocket. The expenses are off. The money that were using for the "multiple expenses", were around another 25% of the net worth. 50 million dollars, were 50 million dollars!!!!
Vito had all the cops, judges, and politicians on his payroll. Also the boss doesn’t have all the money. The guys under him are all earning and kicking up. My guess would be he might have been worth fifty-ish million when he died. No way did he ever have even 100 million. Capone died broke, by the way. He supposedly forgot where he put ten million or so because the syphilis wrecked his brain so badly. Tony Accardo sent Capone’s wife money every month to pay her bills because Al left her with nothing.
Capone's income figures were GROSS receipts.....overlooked in this are "the cost of doing business".....beer brewers, truck drivers, security guards, bodyguards, salaries, property and hardware purchases (delivery trucks, weaponry, commissions paid, and, of course, BRIBERY)....all that money didn't not wind up in his personal pocket.....
When Vito was at war with a rival family they called in a favor for one of Al's hitmen to come after Vito, who responded by sending a threatening letter to Al, with that in mind, I doubt Vito was making MUCH less than Al as Vito was the kind of man to keep his family (literal and figurative) in mind and wouldn't aim so high above him as to engage with a man who could out-gun him in every way
What his criminal enterprises ¨generated¨ isn't the same as what his personal wealth would be. I thought the question was ¨how rich was the Godfather¨ not how much his businesses generated. How much wealth, theoretically, could he have liquidated and walked away with?
Most of that money went into distributing among the ranks. Paying off cops, judges, and politicians. They had lawyer fees. Protection money (bodyguards), and parting, lots of lots of parting and living the luxury life.
He didn't live tho passed the age of 32 when he entered the jail system, so defo no thanks really. That's like living 14 years and even half of that is being a teen. Its a really small span of time when you think about it
Also taken into consideration that The Godfather Part III was set in 1990 and Michael Corleone gave approximately $700 million to the Catholic Church. Does anybody really think that that he would give half or even a quarter of the Corleone fortune away like that?
Your figures are way off. It's 1Billion at his high point!!! Capone generated more than the United States of America at his high point, and it is estimated that Capone generated a total of 3Billion in his life time😂❤
Nah the Corleone is the richest family remember when Micheal buy the immobilere. Michael transfer half a billion to the priest without blinking an eye and don't forget the billion he give to the charity.
Nuh, he was a caporegime under the Great, Don Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" Masseria. The Boss got Capone made in 1928, after Al arranged the death of Frankie Yale for him!!!
Nuh, it was 100m in 1920s money. Prohibition was the most lucrative operation, gangsters ever had. Bigger than the casinos and the drug trade. It was a black market for a product, everybody was wanting, and was ready to pay x20 up price to get it!!!
He’s using Capone as a base, and assuming Corleone is about half as big. I don’t think that’s accurate because we don’t see the kind of far reach like Capone had
Saying half is ridiculous in Capones day Chicago was called the 2nd city for a reason, it was then an for several more decades the second biggest city in America, Capone probably controlled 2/3rds of it. Ain't a single family in New York as big as the Chicago mob, all the families together yes. So basically you gotta figure a New York family is about a quarter the size
