So, Matt remembering his friends, and the old crew coming to get him, is what made him break down. Ridley's synchronized, the scene with Matt's own memories. Genius.

This is just one example of why Ridley Scot is amoung the greats. To get the reaction much the same way radio theatre once drew the audience in....He without words from himself evokes Damon's emotion much like taking in the depth of emotions in this focused radio play.

@@CharlieBrn The way you phrased it reminded me of pro wrestling. They work with the live audience, good ones riff on them for reaction. Is that similar to the radio crew?

I just had to put myself into the situation. This movie, Mark Watney, was isolation for years. Matt played that character month after month, filming the isolated scenes, putting himself into the character more and more. It's beautiful how the writing of The Martian story, and the experience of filming and acting comes together. Because after playing that character for so long - wow, I can feel it, I can see how you can get emotional at that stage, especially if you shot a lot of other scenes on that day and are already immersed in that role. You have to think what it takes to play a role as an actor. You are not a passive viewer. You are actually playing that role. That means, that you must connect to the character, explore its meanings in order to understand his emotions and convey. I think that actors have an even deeper connection to the characters they play than us audience, if it's done right, if it is a good character and they are giving the space to really explore the role. And Matt Damon really is a stellar actor in that regard, he understands how to play those roles beautifully. He totally got and understood who Mark Watney is and what his mentality to life is.

He’s such a good actor in everything, I just rewatched Oppenheimer first time since the cinema and he’s terrific in that and I happened to watch the Martian again a couple of days later and he obviously carries that whole film on his back, he’s almost entirely alone and he’s just so good in it, he’s such a good actor and he comes across so well in general. I haven’t seen his most recent Ridley Scott or Air but I’ve seen so many of his movies since I was a teen and man he’s such a great actor in so many movies, he’s such a proper movie star. He also comes across really well just generally
