I have a Lawn Boy Mower that I bought 50 years ago. I bought it in 1974 when I bought my first Home and still looks new because I washed it after every mow. It is a 2 stroke, but I like it because it is very light. The only thing I did is I replaced the spark plug. I do put premium gas in it. It runs great and starts on the first pull. Now at 68 I am glad I kept it.

I like your kind of story. Getting value out of your power equipment. Keep using the premium. Avoid ethanol. Fuel system problems with marine and small gas engines due to ethanol makes up most of the problems my mechanic friends deal with.

That's neat, I can remember cutting my Grandma's yard every summer with her 2 stroke Lawn Boy. Wish I still had it because it was light as heck.

It's a great tip to keep the head fins clear. Every year I clear grass from my Krohler heads, without Taryl's advice from years ago I would have dropped guides in that motor. The shrouds are a pain to remove, but worth it when I see what lurks in those passages.

More long episodes!! Change of subject, but my 1996 John Deere GT262 wouldn't start. Solenoid just clicked. I remembered the solenoid fix video you did long time ago so I revisited it, made notes found a solenoid on an old junker mower, and it fixed it right up! Starts every time! I fixed a Tufftorq K46 transmission with help from your video and fixed a broken governor on a Briggs engine with help from your video! Many thanks! Your videos have saved me so much money.

It is good practice if you have a leaf blower to blow the cylinder cooling fins thoroughly after every use. It is also a good idea to blow the entire machine off after every use. Clean machines work better than those that are clogged with lots of debris. Just like a clean vehicle drives better than a dirty one. I know that is really not true, but it just feels that way, same with a clean grass cutting machine. One thing I can't stand is a dirty vehicle or a piece of lawn equipment. Using a leave blower instead of a power washer when cleaning on a regular basis is the best option. Bearings and water don't do well together. I only power wash my lawn equipment at the end of each season before putting them in storage for the winter, and after cleaning I grease and lube every moving part. If whoever brought that machine in for Taryl to work one would have blown out the cooling fins on a regular basis, he would not be paying Taryl to replace the head. Enjoyed the video, Taryl. Always look forward with a cup of freshly brewed cup of coffee to set down and watch your Sunday videos.

If it isn’t too time consuming I use a little pressure scrubber with a turbo nozzle and BLAST the fins until they are squeaky clean

Yup, that's exactly what I do, every time I mow, before I put the mower away. Mine has a cheap Intek Break's & Scrap'em engine too, but it's only 18.5 horse not 21 like the one in this video. Gotta keep up the maintenance on those, and so far the one I have is going on it's 8th year now, and no problems so far.

I have the 22hp version in my JD LA135. Every year, after leaf cleanup is over, I remove the fan shroud and blow everything out with compressed air. Then the tractor gets a bath and I jerk the deck off and install the snowblower. Every 200 hours I adjust the valves. I have inspected those guides the past two valve adjustments and so far, no movement. 830 hours on it so far and it still runs great. I also added drain and fill plugs to the Tuff Torq transaxle, so that gets changed every 100-200 hours with Mobil 1 synthetic 20w-50.

Had a big mouse nest over the right jug! Its a 2007 crapsman 22hp intek. I have taken good care of it. Still doesnt burn any oil, origional nikki six carb have never had a problem with it. Fluffy got up in behind the dashboard of my mower (10 year old Sears Craftsman) and chewed up a bunch of wires connected to the starter switch. Now I start it with a knife switch, and the headlight switch opens and closes the fuel cutoff valve. I ordered a replacement starter wiring harness from Sears last June. "They" said it was on backorder and I would have it by September. That November I received a headlight wiring harness with a broken bulb. Pretty sure the "customer service agent" I chatted with online was a bot. Sears died years ago. Now it's just an AI that tricks people into sending it money.

We had a host at the first place I worked at. I was a cook at the local restaurant when I was a kid. My mom worked there and got me the job. There was always cup flying off the drying rack and breaking. On night I went down stairs to fill the ice bucket. I set the scope in the top of the machine and as I went up the stairs it fell off and was laying west off from the machine in the floor. I told the little girl I worked with that I’m not going back down there. She said that she was certainly not going down there. The building was built before the civil war in the little town in perryville ky, might of heard of the battle of perryville from history class. We called him Sam.

You're right Taryl, I have a riding mower with an 18.5 hp Intek Break's & Scrap'em engine in it, and every time I finish mowing, I use my Stilch leaf blower and make sure the whole engine, mower and cooling fins are blown off. I also change the oil and oil filter every other year, and the mower is a cheap one from 2017, and still runs strong, and good compression etc. I changed the oil and filter on it when it was new after about the first 10-15 hours of use, then the next season, but now it seems to be well broken in and the oil still looks clean after 2 years of use so I just change the oil every other year.

My opinion, is the consumer buys the least expensive products they can find and if companies want to sell their products. They have to cheapen them up to compete with the least expensive ones. Unfortunately, this means the the products are becoming throw away products. I'd rather pay a little more and get a better product, but 30 years ago when I was young. I ether bought the cheap stuff or I didn't buy anything. I think there are a lot of people in that situation now.

The fluffy's have eaten the soy based wiring in his car, his Honda ride on mower and then because they were even more hungry they decided to eat the fuel line on his John Deere X series diesel ride on mower. Apparently, they are attracted to the smell of the bio fuel part of the diesel.
