WELCOME TO EXERCISE FOR HEALTH:
Although rare, most aneurysms go undetected as they don’t provide any severe symptoms until they get very large or rupture. But if you know you have one, then you might want some tips on what exercise is suitable. This video provides appropriate advice for both intracranial and aortic aneurysms, the two most common types.
Managing your blood pressure is key with this health condition, so to avoid a huge increase in it while exercising which would increase the risk of a rupture, watch these two videos on tips and advice for exercising with high blood pressure:

I never knew I had AAA until I had a heart attack in May of 2023 and went to hospital and they did CT Scan and I had one so big it could burst at any time, sent by amblance to a bigger hospital that had specialist`s in that field. Had surgery on heart first, Talked to Dr. that was going to do AAA surgery about it and he stated the Aortic Aneurysm was almost 9 inches in Dia. which is 22CM.Asked him how long it took to get that big. 20to 30 years at the very least as they don`t grow that fast. . Had surgery on it and they put in 10 Stents, because they had to reroute all the arties that went to main organs.

Exercise is the only way I can deal with the stress and anxiety that comes with this problem. My valves leak a little too. My Doctors both said I am safe to do light weights and bodyweight exercise. I had a heaviness around my heart and told my family doctor many times. They ran a ECG every time and said nothing wrong. One day I felt worse feeling than before and the urgent care physician send me to the stress test. There the Dr. expressed a serious concern, next thing I had an ECO. Here they found 3 heard valves decease, bradycardia. When they ran a CTA scan found a AAA 4.4 sm and a PFO! If I didn’t go to the urgent care a year ago I would never learned about my condition because the ECG shows the problem when it’s too late. Be persistent and ask for a simple stress test or better ECO on your heart. Most of the Drs don’t care.

I had aortic dissection and aneurysm 5 years ago. I take beta blockers to keep my blood pressure down. I’m trying to keep from rupturing the aorta and structures in my veins. I’ve been unsure about exercise because it definitely fights against what the medication lowers. I just had another CT scan check up and I’ll ask what I should be doing. Idk about that 160 systolic bp recommendation. i’ll see if there’s a top bp recommendation for my exercise or if only gentle cardio is right. for me.

Great stuff Richard. How does blood flow restriction training work for people with Aneurysms. On one hand, it seems appealing as one can get muscle fatigue with low loads but then not sure what effect it has on aortic pressure. do you have any thoughts on this?
@ExerciseForHealth
@ExerciseForHealth 5 месяцев назад
Unfortunately the research for blood flow restriction training has mainly been done on athletes. There isn't a lot of evidence for people with chronic health conditions, and I haven't found any for heart related conditions, so I wouldn't want to advise this type of training to any of my subscribers yet. The evidence that is out there looks promising, but according to the research, to do it properly can be quite difficult without the necessary equipment.

@@ExerciseForHealth Thanks for getting back with me. My Thoracic surgeon who specialized in aortic root Aneurysm had an exercise prescription as followed - no loads over 50lbs -rowing machine not good but all other forms of cardio fine -squats and bench press- be careful with as they put a lot of stress on the aorta -Body wt exercises, isometric, plyometrics are all fine Being an exercise physiologist I ask many questions, especially for clarification when he gave green light on isometrics. I like your prescription of 40-50% 1RM seems to be more exact than the general 50lb rule. where can I find some more research on exercise protocols for aortic aneurysms? another idea I had was to work unilateral to reduce overall loads. So do 1 leg legpress rathe than 2 leg legpress. thanks again for all the good info

Have had an aortic anerism for 8 yrs IAM 74 yrs old , had heart surgery 9 yrs ago for valve , quit smoking and drinking when I was 33 yrs old , walk two miles a day when weather good or use treadmill, doctor wants me grasping for air when walking so I do some uphill and do grasp for air and feel great ! when I was 35 had inflammatory prostrate , doctor gave me prescription that had zinc in it and it shrank prostate, so year later had same problem and took 50MG of zinc a day and 800 mg ipobufrin a day for a week and problem gone ! So doctor said zinc reduces inflammation so when arota began to enlarge it went up to 4.4 then to 4.5 then back to 4.4, and been like that for eight years and been taking zinc every day 25mg , so my thinking if ZINC shrinks prostate then why shouldn't it shrink arota ? Other than that it' has been stable for eight years ! DO Not Follow my zinc protocol because it may have nothing to do with my arota ! But I do find it interesting! and it is what it is !

You mentioned risk of a aneurysmal rupture due to weightlifting is about 1 in 5000. Is that if your RPE is in the range of 3-5 as you indicated in the video? What’s the risk if you’re lifting close to failure in the 7-9 perceived exertion scale? The same or do the odds get significantly worse? Thank you
@ExerciseForHealth

Yes. I wouldn't know what the exact risk changes are, but as blood pressure increases with load, you would expect the risk to increase.

Hello, need some help if you are are able to guide me. What resistance exercises are safe for a patients with messenteric artery dissection?
@anam9621
@anam9621 4 месяца назад
It’s crazy how there is no much information or much studies in the literature about messenteric artery dissection lifestyle, exercise limits, what to look for etc. Because of that I believe not even doctos know what to recommend. This issue, leaves patients with little guidance and poor decision making. There needs to be a specific guidelines for each type of aneurysm or dissections, especially the ones that doctors deemed as “Safe and will continue to monitor”. Patients need to be educated by either sending them to cardiac rehab or something like that so they know how high their blood pressure Can get. This why the preventative medicine in America needs to improve. They leave patients to figure it out and don’t educate them.

Hello there! I am 40 years old, and just found out to have an aortic aneurysms of max 4cm. I am a quite active person, I like going to the gym, exercise, play football. I saw the doctor and did a scan, and he only recommended me to not lift heavy weights, which I find still hard to accept a bit in a sudden. I feel totally healthy and strong, but I don’t want to run any risk, but also I am paranoid of what could happen to me, and this is slowing me down quite a bit! I’m not sure if anyone can help me to realise properly what are those exercises I should or should not do! Doctor said that I can even run a marathon, but about the rest, he suggested me some medicines which I am taking for cholesterol, and as said just to not put too much strain on my body when doing lifting weights! Still I feel a bit confused. Can I play football for instance, despite in this video it says to avoid physical contact! Honestly, I feel still young, just like teenager times!

The advice in this video is generic, so there may be people that don't fit this criteria fully. You can definitely stay active though, but treat it as though you have high blood pressure, as that's what you need to control to avoid increased risk on the aneurysm. maybe see if you can get your copper level checked. Copper deficiency can cause aneurysms. It is involved in making collagen/connective tissue. Look up copper deficiency symptoms and see if 3-4 or more apply to you. Also want to look at thyroid/parathyroid and liver health. Parathyroid deals with calcium utilization and connective tissue.

#.0cm-5.5cm Very low risk of rupture when exercising. anything above 4 is at high risk. 5.5 is not high risk? is this serious.

I'm not sure I quite understand this question, but although having an aneurysm is dangerous to your health, the video explains the risk to health during exercise, which studies have shown is very low for 3.0cm - 5.5cm.
